»Friday Night« producer is »optimistic«

By Derrik J. Lang, AP Entertainment Writer | March 20, 2008

LOS ANGELES --"Friday Night Lights" just may score another season.

Executive producer Jason Katims said he's "incredibly optimistic" about a third season for the drama, which has been in limbo since the writers strike ended.

"There's no deal yet for the show," Katims said Wednesday at the William S. Paley Television Festival. "But we are being incredibly optimistic that's going to happen and happen soon."

Although a critical hit, ratings were low for the show, which depicts small-town Texas life where high school football is king.

When viewers last saw the Dillon Panthers, the team was gearing up for the playoffs. Because of the writers strike, which halted most TV production, seven of the 22 episodes NBC ordered for season two weren't produced.

Fans have fought to keep the show on the air, launching http://www.SaveFridayNightLights.tv and asking viewers to send donations to fill NBC entertainment chief Ben Silverman's mailbox with miniature plastic footballs.

"I think the answer is going to be pretty soon," Katims said. "I have a feeling we're two or three weeks away from knowing."

A spokeswoman for NBC said Thursday the network had no comment.

Katims said a third season would likely pick up after the planned events of season two. However, the series would integrate unused story lines into the new season, which he said could begin filming as soon as July.

Smash's last episode was so good. I love Coach Taylor's relationship with his players. Loved how he praised Smash to the university coach.....and how sad was that last scene between them? Damn, that was good.

The show is getting about 4 million viewers on NBC. Don't know if it went well on DirectTv or not, but I hope we get another season too.

'Friday Night' gets two-season pickup

NBC, DirecTV pact on football drama

By CYNTHIA LITTLETON

Deal calls for the Imagine TV/Universal Media Studios drama skein to continue through a fourth and fifth season of 13 episodes each. As they did this season, "Friday Night Light's" third, DirecTV will get the first shot at airing the segs commercial-free before they bow on NBC. The negotiations between the Peacock and DirecTV hit a roadblock last week but ultimately resumed and the agreement was reached today.

Reps for NBC could not immediately be reached for comment Monday.

Anyone watching the new season? I don't know how they're doing it, but the first two epiosdes has been GREAT! All the changes, new characters, old characters gone, this thing with west/east Dillon... it's just fabulous! I'm so glad this show is still on!!

From Ausiello Files:

NBC has just unveiled its post-Olympics, Leno-free midseason schedule, and there’s good news for fans of Friday Night Lights who don’t have DirecTV. The drama’s fourth season — the one currently airing on DirecTV — will make its Peacock debut on Friday, April 30.
