I haven't seen this posted?

Passions wins Outstanding Daily Drama at the 17th Annual GLADD Media Awards.

The show won the award for the coming out storyline of longtime character Simone Russell. Cathy Janeen Doe accepted the award on behalf of Passions.

ABC's General Hospital was the other nominee in the category.

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) is dedicated to promoting and ensuring fair, accurate and inclusive representation of people and events in the media as a means of eliminating homophobia and discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation.

Congrats Passions. It's sad how a joke like Passions wins this ... it's a shame that a show like this is the best one that writes for an openly gay character.

Kudos to Passions!

Wait, GH was nominated but ATWT's absolutely brilliant story wasn't? How is this possible?

Because I believe the award was for 2005, not 2006. ATWT should be nominated next year.

lol I agree. ATWT's storyline has been 10x better then GH"s or PSSN.

Like I said, these nominations came out several months ago. I think it was even before Luke even came out to anyone on ATWT. That is why ATWT wasn't nominated on this years ballot.

Yay! For Passions, they deserve this for 2005. And while I know Passions isn't considered Shakespeare (even by soap standards), they did a good job with this story (not showing Simone's story more consistently would be my only complaint. Simone's a core character, well-cast, they didn't shy away from showing some physical affection (even having Simone and Rae in bed together kissing...AMC's Bianca never got quite that far).

Congrats to Passions and Cathy Jeneen Doe.

Shame on ABCD, once again.

I would bet ATWT is a shoe-in for next year.

There really shouldn't be a nine month delay in giving out the award, though imo.

It's sad that there are so few nominees, they can't pick the "best" they have to pick the "only" two shows available. For 2006, ATWT is a shoe-in.

Yeah, ATWT will definitely be nominated (and IMO should win) next year.

The one thing I like about Passions is that it definitely isn't afraid to take risks. GH's handling of Lucas' coming out was a total joke though. I'm glad they didn't win.

ATWT is gonna win next year no question.

ICAM...

Luke's story has been worth 100 Simone and a 1000 Lucas so-called stories.

Luke's story has been well written.

I just love that backhanded compliment. It's like 'congratulations!' but you suck and don't deserve it. 'Oh, and congratulations!'

I'm not trying to start anything here, I just don't get why EVERY show must have gay people in it; at least, statements like yours suggest this. I mean, it's not an evil thing if only two or three soaps have gay characters. It also isn't a bad thing if only one has such characters. It's like the backlash against "Friends" for almost never featuring black characters. Big deal? Ideally, shows would be representative of everyone, but often times that just isn't possible; to have a black, a white, an Asian a Hispanic, a homosexual, a transsexual...and ultimately, it should be what the writer of a show wants. I disagree with the way gay groups and women's organizations and other causes lobby for writers to change their vision and present certain social issues or dominate shows with gay or lesbian characters. It all goes back to that saying "Let the writers write." That's all I'm saying here.

I guess everything's fine and dandy as long as YOU are well represented Mr. JSF, hmm?

Take a look at your world man. It ain't just white and it ain't just straight men and women. We just want soaps to recognize the world as it is today.

It's not like soap writers have the freedom to present their vision unfettered by corporate presssures, favored actors and the wishes of fans (well, in that case if it's not ABCD, any way). That situation is exceedingly rare today.

Enjoy the closeted lily white 1950s.

LOL, JSF. I'm actually an old-school fan of Passions. Watched it RELIGIOUSLY, seriously, I RAN HOME to see it every day from July 1999 - August 2002. After that I've watched on and off.

I just meant Passions is considered a "joke" in the industry (despite getting TWO TV Guide covers, coverage in Entertainment Weekly) so for them to win.

I'm glad they did because they have the most guts to show what they have and I applaud them for it. My only complaint, like others, was that there was no buildup.

It all goes back to that saying "Let the writers write." That's all I'm saying here.

There are numerous stories/anecdotes, over decades, about writers not being allowed to write gay characters or being restricted in how much airtime gay characters are given, etc. etc. etc. I believe that had it been up to most soap headwriters we'd have seen many more gay & lesbian characters over the years. Granted there's no way to know for sure.

So I agree. Let the writers write without having to bow to the pressure of what is the real political correctness of our time, i.e. pandering to conservatives.
