As The World Turns Discussion Thread
Speaking of which, welovesoaps.net I mean, the last 3 times I've tried to access the site I've gotten an error. Is it just me & my Internet connection or is there a problem with the site? Anyone got any idea? Thanks.

Yep, that's exactly what I thought, too.

Well, she was certainly different. Otherwise I just have to agree to disagree. I truly enjoyed Carmen & I think in general that AW was very lucky with recasts. I think Beverlee was the best Iris possible. ... Ellen Wheeler was the best Marley. ... Anne Heche was the best Vicky. ... Victoria Wyndham was the best Rachel. ... Nancy Frangione was the best Cecile. ... Anna Stuart was the best Donna. ... RKK was better as Sam than either Bobby Reno or Shane Roberts. ... RKK was the best Sam. ... Richard Bekins the best Jamie.

The Doctors Discussion Thread
https://shallotpeelblog.org/2021/06/24/blog-50-renata-adler/ It begins CANARIES IN THE MINESHAFT: Essays on Politics and Media. by Renata Adler. St. Martin’s Press. New York. © 2001. “Afternoon Television: Unhappiness Enough, and Time” “You have to tolerate extremes of hatred and loneliness to follow, Monday through Friday every week. through a still unterminated period of months, the story of an educated man so bitter that he kills himself solely to frame another man for murder. Yet there is an audience of at least six million at two-thirty every afternoon New York time (other times across the country) prepared to watch this plot line, among other plot lines, develop on “The Doctors,” a television program of the genre soap opera, or daytime dramatic serial.” And, this is no joke. It is for fiction a single act of rage and isolation like this imploded revenge, a suicide caroming across the board. “This contriver of his own death to make it look like someone else’s literal crime has, …detonated incalculable threats in other lives.” “The Doctors plays this all out”. For all I know, this might happen all the time. But “The Doctors” has a special instance here. And it goes on but it's not all about the current story on this show.

Also fans on RATS (Usenet) and on Delphi. But speaking of critics who also watched soaps, Renata Adler. Here is one essay on soaps that was a chapter in one of her books. https://shallotpeelblog.org/2021/06/24/blog-50-renata-adler/ It begins ... CANARIES IN THE MINESHAFT: Essays on Politics and Media. by Renata Adler. St. Martin’s Press. And it continues. It is about soaps in general but specifically also about the storyline that is showing on The Doctors right now & about some of SFT & about DAYS & about AW. And that's a lot of soaps to cover in one essay! “About “Friday Night Lights” my first thought when I saw “maybe the best-acted show on TV” and “soap opera” on the same paragraph—with soap opera *not* being used as a pejorative— …” – Lynn Liccardo

Underlying is the shift from character-based to plot-driven storytelling & I definitely think there is a split in soap opera fandom over that. The idea that some just left is yet another possibility of what happened.

Me, I still love Ava & I think she is the part Maura West was born to play. However, she's had a pretty bad patch of writing. I liked her scene with Nikolas & also with Trina & in between her scene with Cyrus. I don't know what to think about her bunking with Sonny. Just as I recently remarked about Marcy Walker, who was fabulous as Liza Colby on AMC but when she became Eden Capwell on Santa Barbara it was just like the world order was now fixed.

Oh, I'm a stickler. The only one thing I disagreed with Pete Lemay about was firing Jacquie Courtney & yes, I am one of those people who never really thought they got a recast to suit me.

You are a soap fan & you want to compare numbers of soap fans who will go out of their way to sign a petition with a percent of the population? If you think there is validity in that way of thinking I'd suggest any conclusions you draw would be questionable. What soap fan doesn't know we are a niche population?! Okay, I would like it if we could cease. The last time this forum got heated, years ago, Toups locked the forum & kept it locked for months. I don't want that to happen again.

Welcome back. This morning you are hilarious, with a capital HI! 🤔💁♀️🙄🫣😉🤏 Been thinking. Everett said he had a confession to make & then he never made one. Why didn't Stephanie call him on that?! And, also, Alex said that Marlena was very understanding about his schedule. So it was night when she was seeing him, wasn't it?

GH: Actor's last airdate revealed
I think it is interesting that Billy Warlock was also in a Menendez Brothers project. If I remember correctly he was also playing Lyle. Just a little tidbit of soap connection over the years.

I also have been told that the location of Patrick & Robin's house was in that suburb. Of course, this is a contemporary write back & doesn't do anything to prove or disprove sister soap or spin-off. I can see I'm going to have to make time to read these. Really ancient history & a time that I have been open about when I was very ill & taking a great deal of medication & it literally caused my mind to not function well at all. If people judge me by something that happened, what, 10 years ago, instead of judging me by my behavior of say the last 4 years, I personally think that is not a reasoned way to approach things. But, I guess you would say that it's okay for them to hold a grudge like that. I don't know. I just checked & I was first here in Feb. of 2008, so it's more like 16 years ago. Is that math right?!! 🤔💁♀️🙄🫣😉

Okay, but typically mentions outside of serious treatment or fan treatmeant, the rest were likely to be pejorative. In her doctoral dissertation my BFF had to catalog all of the mentions in the NYT during a specific period of time to soaps. I forget the percentage but a huge majority were not related to soaps at all but instead were pejorative terms about real life situations.

Primetime Soaps
Ran into a fan this weekend who is on a Falcon Crest site & he's doing comparisons of Lorimar Productions. Apparently there was a lot of movement of personnel between & among the different shows. Specifically what he was looking for right now is video that shows footage that was used in Falcon Crest that was also used either in Secrets of Midland Heights or King's Crossing. And he was finding common footage like that. So many feature movies. So many movies of the week. So many sitcoms & family dramas. And, then, it looks like about 10 primetime soaps including Dallas, Falcon Crest & Knots! Flamingo Road & Secrets of Midland Heights & King's Crossing not successful. But, maybe King's Crossing was a forerunner of Dawson's Creek. Homefront & Sisters & Lace all successful.

NBC Daytime
They are both the first women to rise so high in the, or maybe any, network. She struggles to develop a specific soap & that is thought to be a parallel to Bolen's considerable frustration & effort with launching "How To Survive a Marriage." But, hard fact? No. It's all interpretation. I'm surprised you haven't seen it. From a pop culture perspective it was one that "everyone saw". But, it's also a very very good flick.
