GL did a really good job of sex scenes IMO. Bruce Barry directed many & I loved his eye & his choices. An Olivia/Phillip scene that he directed is possibly one of my favorite sex scenes on daytime. She's cheating on Alan & I can't think if Phillip was breaking any vows or not. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RkDa52LUCU8&list=RDRkDa52LUCU8&start_radio=1 It's just so fun that they did that!

I think the acting reels are now 20 minutes worth of material during the eligible time period, which this year is apparently going to be bonkers because of them moving the Daytime Emmys from June to the fall. If I understand correctly they can do one episode or two or three & they do not have choose scenes which tell a story. I believe it was 15 minutes recently & many actors felt they had cut too far back. They had been intentionally trying to make the reels shorter because of the problems they have getting all peer level potential voters to watch all of everyone's submissions. He does seem like a one hit wonder, huh? I love Pete. I think I can say it. Part of me wants to suggest that he never was given another opportunity to go for the gusto & then he became a professional soap writing consultant! Did your mother & her soap pals watch anything besides GL? Wasn't GL in Chicago broadcast at 10 in the morning & "Day Before"?

ALL: Your first soap watching memory
My first memories, as a teen, 15 which was an awful age if you ask me, but, anyway, were of AW and of DAYS. But, AW is vague but DAYS is sharp. 1966, Susan Hunter (Denise Alexander) and Julie #3 (whoever?) were best friends. Julie was dating, or courting or secretly engaged to David Martin (also whoever?), who was 3-5 years older than she & Susan. They were high school age. He was college age. Julie, as we probably all know, was living with her grandparents, Tom & Alice. Tom thought that David was too old for Julie. I believe he also thought they were too serious about each other & his suspicions were dead on. But, he made the mistake of forbidding Julie to see him. Right, as headstrong as she was?!!! So, he just drove their relationship into secrecy, creating lies & a heightened sense of "us against the world" since they had to sneak around to see each other. This also meant there were too many times when in the evening David would be alone & Julie would be stuck at home, also alone. David & Julie were actively planning to run off & get married. I think they had a fight. David went out & got very drunk. Susan had had a falling out with her parents & also was getting very drunk at the same bar. OF COURSE, the two of them fell into conversation, which led to them hooking up, which led to her being pregnant. (Bill Bell wrote this.) The 3 of them decided together that Susan & David would marry so the child would be legitimate & after the child was born, they'd divorce & Julie & David would get back on track to get married. Susan gave birth to a boy, who she named Richard after her father. He was called Dickie. There was an argument over a swing set that David got, with Susan saying the boy was far too young & too small. One day David was supposed to be watching the baby who he had out on this disputed swing & he wasn't paying attention briefly & the baby fell off the swing & broke his neck & died. This has already gotten too long. Cutting to the chase. Susan went nuts & killed David. "Uncle Mickey" was her lawyer. He used temporary insanity & it worked, he got her off. The two who had been the very best of friends now were the bitterest of enemies. And, of course, by this time, Julie (#4 now, SSH) was pregnant by David with another boy child. They were set for years of nemesis-level hatred. (In May 1970 Susan introduced Doug Williams to Julie, with the evilest of intents but it backfired.) Edit to Add: The camera panned to that swing, bare & barely moving over & over & over. That dam*ed swing drove me crazy. I cried. Bill Bell SWORE he would never kill another infant. Apparently he got a lot of mail.

Do you think that the same applies to Kraze? They were created at the same time.- GH: June 2025 Discussion Thread
James is the perfect soap child. When Mac basically forbade him from seeing Cody & James reacted by running away from home TO Cody's, I knew we had a special kid. And, he even said, in his defense, "IF you hadn't said what you said, I wouldn't have had to run away." Love the way he thinks!- Guiding Light Discussion Thread

This is from THE SURVIVAL OF SOAP OPERA: TRANSFORMATIONS FOR A NEW MEDIA ERA. Edited by Sam Ford, Abigail de Kosnik, and C. Lee Harrington. University Press of Mississippi/Jackson. © 2011. GL Relevance and Renewal in a Changing Genre by Patrick Erwin Patrick Erwin is a freelance writer and journalist and author of the soap opera blog ‘A Thousand Other Worlds’ ( http://1000worlds.wordpress.com/). He has also written about soaps for the Marlena De Lacroix site ( http://www.marlenadelacroix.com/). While he watches a variety of daytime serial dramas airing today, he was a lifelong viewer of ‘Guiding Light’ and ‘As the World Turns.’ ME: I do not think Patrick meant to judge this as unfair negativity. This entire essay was written from a particular point of view. A handful of people were invited to "tour" the new production model, ask questions, take notes & write up what they saw, heard & experienced. So, he was rapidfire describing what was happening & then some select reaction/s. And, I think he did a good job. BTW, this is an excellent book. It's in the Internet Archive but only borrowable to someone with "print disabilities" ... whatever that is. Amazon has a used paperback for $21.50-ish & kindle version for $30 & a new HB for $60. I wonder if people's local libraries would have it in either print or e-edition. The Internet Archive gives an excellent overview of all the different contributors & what their essays were about.- DAYS: June 2025 Discussion Thread
It was so weird. I've wanted to edit the 2-21-24 episode which is Young Tom & Alice and Julie, Doug, Maggie, Lucas, Chad, Thomas, John & Marlena with Leo learning the history of the Horton family in Salem & Thomas accidentally causing the time capsule to be found & the ornaments being found safe in the basement or somewhere. Never had the time so I finally just made the time & then, Voila, the show/Peacock decide to use them, basically out of the blue. The other episode I had on hold like that, that I also just made the time & did it, is 7-29-24 which I call Eric & Nicole A Love Story. That thing has a little over 2 minutes, non-stop through about a dozen flashbacks!- Guiding Light Discussion Thread
Garrett hated her story with Sebastian as badly as she hated that Pied Piper Steal the Kids thing!!! LOL Of course, she was also incredibly articulate in how & why she hated almost everything about the new production model. I should find that & post it. Scathing! I always try to see all sides & often to me at least there seem to be 6 or 7.- Guiding Light Discussion Thread
And, of course, as we all know Jerry verDorn was not fired, ever, from anywhere, by anyone. He was a contract player who was changed to recurring. Anyone who tells you he was fired doesn't understand the most basic things about soaps, contracts, recurring, probably do not even understand what under 5 means. And, he, himself, thought it might've been a network decision. Personally, I think it was Wheeler's second worst blunder. I believe that without really thinking about it, she took him for granted. Good ole Jerry, we can count on him, BULL. You can trust me when I tell you that when they called that next week to book him for 4 or 5 upcoming dates, she was gobsmacked that Jerry had a contract role on OLTL. If she'd only thought, she could have gotten rid of Bradley Cole, to name one.- Guiding Light Discussion Thread
I am one who loved Tognoni's Dinah!!! Not firing KZ at that pivotal moment was one of Wheeler's worst bungles! Others were also amazing playing that same part on THE DOCTORS! So, part of it may have been the Nola-ness of it all. Although I thought she was really good both on DESIGNING WOMEN and on BABYLON 5.- Guiding Light Discussion Thread
According to Jerry & maybe others, GL had a fine tradition of mentoring the younger actors & they had done so for years & even though circumstances changed quite a lot, they kept right on doing it. That tradition was strong at AW, too. Maureen was so special & she just got better with age, unlike others who I will not name. Of course, it should not be lost on fans that everyone was asked to take a cut to allow the show to have a fraction more to produce with AND EVERYONE BUT ONE PERSON AGREED TO DO SO. This compares with budget crunches in other businesses like the airlines, etc. The execs voluntarily took their cuts first, of course. Some people have mentioned words like selfish, self-serving, nyah, we won't go down that path. And, also if anyone tries to tell you that anyone bullied KZ, consider that it is a totally ludicrous idea. At any rate, the only bully at GL in the modern era was Rauch & he didn't go after KZ. Considering how unfairly she threw some people under the bus in her book, maybe she was a bully?!- Guiding Light Discussion Thread
- Y&R/B&B/GL Vault Updates
This is not per se about the vault, which does not mean we do not shower it & its keepers with all the love & appreciation we can muster, since we do. But, at some point in the recent months, I believe it was here that someone posted "Rachel on Bluesky's" Episodes on Google Drives links. I have just found that her DAYS link returns an error that tells me the contents of the drive were taken down. So I checked all of her other links & they are fine. To be specific, this is the one defunct link: Days: https://mega.nz/folder/8ucnQDoR#BPvY739-6VRt1a99jigOiQ gone I looked at her profile on Bluesky to see if there was any notation in her bio info, but no intel at all about this. All of her other shows look fine, ordinary, no changes.- Guiding Light Discussion Thread

Okay, I understand that. The thing is I think the difference is Zimmer. I do not believe Paul was better behaved at GL. I just think Kim's attitude about a male boss are so screwed up that she likes him & thinks he likes her & does not care about his actual character flaws especially having to do with women.- Guiding Light Discussion Thread
I think this is an example of things not found to be true when compared to RL. Believe you me, there are absolutely stories about Rauch at GL. Some are different but even more toxic. GL was a very paranoid place & that was to him. Also he had absolute control over what women wore. He liked certain colors. He liked skirts to be a certain length, often called short. The intercom was a two-way communication deal so he listened in on everything. And, often he made people pay for whatever. Karma was way too slow for his way of thinking.- GH: Classic Thread
