Soap Opera Cast Lists and Character Guides- Cancelled and Current
I had no idea that Sandy was involved with John Dixon to the point of marrying him, as I have never seen this story mentioned in summaries of the show.I had always wondered what John Dixon's role in the show was before he became involved with Kim. The Sandy/John story would have been with Dagne as John didn't appear till 1969 when Dagne would have returned. Sandy eventually married Peter Kane and left Oakdale in 1971. Upon further investigation, a summary of the Dec 1 67 episode mentions that Pa hopes Sandy will be home for Xmas. A full cast crawl doesn't have Sandy listed. This seems to tie in with Sandy being sent to a sanitaruim after being burned. That story led to Penny becoming attached to Jimmy and marrying Roy McGuire. So if Danfling's recollections are true, Dagne actually left in 67 and Sandy was off the show until May 68 when Jill appeared. Sandy returning and wanting to reclaim Jimmy would have led to Penny's departure a few months later.

Y&R December 2022 Discussion Thread
So Y&R have been listening to us! When Christine was reminiscing, she actually got her own set. No idea where it was supposed to be, but assuming it was her own living room she's into snow cabin chic. It was just a wall, a sofa, a table and some decor but showed it can be done. Cricket didn't move off the sofa so there was no need for much room, but this template could be used by putting in another wall and thereby having a cheap set that could be used for particular scenes. What's puzzling though is that the Crimson Lights set was used that day and it would have been simple to pop Christine at a table on the 'terrace' to tape those scenes. Maybe LLB's scenes were taped at a different time and just inserted. Still puzzled about Glam Club and what it is exactly supposed to be - a nightclub that people visit during the day? OK For reasons only known to Morina & Co Glam Club gets extras as patrons whereas Society and CL are only allowed silent staff. One last set comment-where is the snowy park setting supposed to be? At least it is something different.

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
Rita was a Christian and upfront about it, long before it became more mainstream. I wonder how she felt about all the affairs, illegitimate children etc depicted on the show, especially when the stories became less rigid about punishing misdeeds? Used properly, and with good writing, Carol could have become a good support character to various characters on the show, offering a different perspective (which they probably would ignore!)

Y&R December 2022 Discussion Thread
How far are they going to go with this? Has Lauralee Bell decided to make more than her few appearances every few months? How long is Michael Damian around? If this is just going to be a few episodes, Christine can just say Paul is out of town on business. Wasn't that what Paul said a few times in the past to explain Christine not being around?

Another World Discussion Thread
Honolulu Star-Bulletin Honolulu, Hawaii 11 Mar 1970 Can an Oversexed Neurotic Find Happiness? The Most Hated Woman on Television By Norman Mark Chicago Mrs. Rachel Matthews (nee Davis) is the most hated character on day-time television. Monday through Friday millions of women watch NBC's "Another World" just to hiss every time Rachel appears. The housewives absolutely loathe this cute little brunette. Ask any woman who has watched "Another World" over the last two and a half years and invariably she will turn purple at the mere mention of Rachel. Intrigued by these demonstrations of passion, I called Robin Strasser, the actress who plays Rachel, to find out why her TV character is the object of such scorn. Her explanation was quite long and complex, befitting a soap-opera heroine. But as near as I can figure them out these are the sins of Rachel: About two and a half years ago she appeared as the first lower-class person to integrate an essentially middle-class soap opera. Her father had a prison record and her mother was a hair dresser. Rachel began as a tacky department store model who wooed and won nice young Dr. Russ Matthews, whose aunt is the richest woman in town. Rachel did not and perhaps still does not love the poor schlepp, who has been off at a medical convention for the last several months. (Actually the actor who portrays Rachel's husband is making a movie). Well, Sir, This little Jezebel, who probably fooled around plenty before she met Russ, wouldn't let this gentle, sweet intern touch her until after they were married (and sometimes not even then but more of that later). Russ, good husband that he is, set up housekeeping in his parents home and designed a frugal existence for his bride, who had dreams of living in a grand style. Rachel immediately plotted to take over Russ' sister's large bedroom, eventually forcing poor Alice, the sister, to move to a smaller room. When Rachel got pregnant for the first time, she went into hysterics because she didn't want the baby. ("Actually they kept playing the tape of me in a hysterical coma for 10 weeks," Miss Strasser says, "while my husband and I were on a Caribbean vacation.") After her miscarriage, this little minx, this harlot, had a one-night affair with Stephen Frame, Alice's millionaire fiance. As luck would have it, Rachel got pregnant again and only then admitted husband Russ to her bedroom after months of sexual drought. But she told Alice that Frame was really tne guy who had done her wrong, causing Alice to break her engagement with Frame. This ruined Alice, who has been staring morosely into the TV cameras for about a year now. (Actually, the script writers had to rush Rachel into pregnancy, quickly creating the one-night stand with Stephen Frame, because Miss Strasser herself had become pregnant and was running out of dress styles that could hide this fact. Miss Strasser, you see, is married to Laurence Luckinbill, who once was Frank Carver on CBS' "Secret Storm." It seems that Rachel is really misunderstood. What is wrong with a lady recoiling from motherhood, hating her son, loathing her mother and father, despising her husband and all his relatives and detesting her role as a housewife. Can't an oversexed little flirt find happiness? (I haven't even told you about Lahoma, Rachel's young aunt by marriage who had a wild affair while she was married and once stripped in the living room of a man's apartment right there before the all-seeing network TV cameras. Her story is even wilder than Rachel's. But Lahoma seems happy now, although we're watching her carefully.) Miss Strasser, who seems to be terribly bright and just plain nice over the telephone, reports regretfully that hatred for her character is slopping over into her personal life. People meet her in the street and simply can't believe that she won't steal their fiance or curse their relative, For the record Miss Strasser . has been happily married for three years, loves her husband, his relatives and her child. She is a graduate of the New York High School of the Performing Arts, is a veteran of the American Conservatory Theater and, after five years of starving, has found regular pay days via "Another World." Miss Strasser is convinced that Rachel is a neurotic who alternates between hating and "coochy-cooing" her husband because of deeper, unrevealed mental problems. Unless you can convince me otherwise, I agree with Miss Strasser. Rachel Matthews is just a little misun derstood nut. Perhaps if all the fans of "Another World" would aim a big, concentrated love beam each day at Rachel, she may soften and change. For if we can learn to love Rachel hubby-hater, mommy-maligner, kiddie crusher that she is perhaps we will all be a little better for trying. Then again, perhaps we will not.

Either she was brought in to wrap up Sandy's story (maybe they didn't expect Dagne to leave?) or she didn't click in the role. Dagne came back in 1969 Ronnie Carroll beginning June 1975 Barbara Rucker 1975-79

Ratings from the 60's
Yes, they were very slow in expanding SFT and TGL. Since ATWT and TEON launched in 1956 in 30 min format, every other show either expanded or debuted as a half hour. CBS were having problems at 2pm with ATWT #1 but Password losing too much of that lead-in. So CBS decided that Love Is A Many Splendored Thing would be the answer to their problems. I don't know why they didn't just expand SFT and TGL to 30 min then and move Guiding Light to 2pm.

All My Children Tribute Thread
The Miami News Miami, Florida 14 Jul 1975, Poor, sweet Mary's dead and no one knows reason why ' By SHERRY WOODS . Miami News Radio-TV Writer " . "Mary's dead." I blinked at the whispered news, tried to look appropriately dismayed and wondered who the devil Mary was. Apparently I looked more blank than dismayed. "You know ", Mary. She's dead." I still didn't know, but I was certainly sorry to hear it, I muttered, and thought of beating a hasty retreat. "On TV." Another clue. Mary? On TV? Ah ha. ''MARY. On All My Children. She's dead? She was in intensive care last time I watched the show." "See. You know. I knew you'd know." The man who'd launched this conversation was probably one of millions around the country, who'd been informed of the soap opera tragedy by their frantic or grief-stricken wives. Some of the wives were calling clear to ABC in New York to protest the sudden, senseless killing of a favorite character on the popular daytime drama. At network headquarters last week, the calls had neared 100 within a couple of days of Mary Kennicott Martin's death and the mailroom was gearing up for an onslaught of viewer protests and sympathy cards. The callers were all women, and like the women in a supermarket here who passed the word up and down the aisles, they were upset. Some of them called from as far away as Toronto and Missouri to register their dismay. Here at WPLG-TV, more than 40 calls were registered initially in the promotion, programming and news departments, and the reaction there and everywhere was typical of what happens anytime a daytime drama star dies unexpectedly. Viewers and residents of All My Children's Pine Valley, U.S.A., may have been harder hit by Mary's death at the hands of burglars than they would have been by other killings, because she was never a plot line villain. As played by Susan Blanchard, Mary was an all suffering soul who didn't have a mean bone in her body. She was even able to forgive her husband's ex-wife who'd given her a rotten time. The two actually became friends and becoming friends with Erica Kane Brent requires a level of goodness and tolerance that qualifies one for sainthood. And so, by the time Mary even reached the intensive care unit following surgery enough, tears had been shed to end a midsummer drought in the desert. Soap opera deaths come about for any number of reasons. The tragedy may simply further the plot. The character may deserve to die. The star may want out, or the actor himself may be unruly enough that the producers, want him out, as happened recently with George Reinholt on Another World. Reinholt, who played Steven Frame in the NBC daytime drama, protested frequently and publicly about his role in the show, according to reports. He was given, a death scene in lieu of a pink slip. He also landed another role immediately in a competing ABC show, One Life to Live. As for Susan Blanchard, however, I'm still trying to find someone who knows exactly why she was written out of All My Children. It could have something to do with her personal life. She is married in real life to her on-screen co-star Charles Frank (Jeff Martin). As of last check, her husband was contemplating suicide in the soap opera and may be on his way out as well, so the two of them may be heading for bigger and better things. If so, we'll all have to dry our tears and try to muddle through without them

Same strategy CBS used when they moved Dukes and Dallas up an hour to place Falcon Crest at 10 and place a similar show in a time period they were already winning. But it didn't work when CBS tried it when Magnum and Knots moved up an hour. CBS lost interest in AfterMash, renewing it, but placing it up against A Team where it fizzled.

Y&R: Anthony Morina OUT as EP!
Wouldn't single camera require multiple takes to get all the angles? That would be more expensive. I believe it is still 3 camera but with limited movement to save time and money.
-
Y&R: Anthony Morina OUT as EP!
That probably took rehearsal of both camera operators and cast and there is not the time or budget these days. It's pretty much limited movement all round so they can get it done quickly in one take. There are barely even any interesting camera angles eg shooting from a different vantage point or with objects in foreground etc.

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
CBS collapsing on Sundays with only The Jeffersons making an appearance after 60 Minutes at #2. Fortunately MSW was around the corner. ABC strong with movies. Monday saw CBS start strong with Scarecrow and After Mash but the latter faded. Late in the season Kate and Allie/Cagney and Lacey scored. But NBC got a midseason hit from Bloopers as did ABC movie. Tuesday at last NBC scored a hit with A Team taking 8pm away from ABC after many years. All of ABC Tues was weakened and mid season NBC found a hit with Riptide at 9. ABC gained on Wed by moving Fall Guy and Dynasty up an hour and inserting Hotel. CBS continued to win Thurs with Magnum/Simon/Knots CBS won Friday but unable to come up with an 8pm hit to lead into Dallas/Falcon ABC won Sat on strength of Love Boat. 1 Dallas 2 60 Minutes 3 Dynasty 4 The A-Team 5 Simon & Simon 6 Magnum, P.I. 7 Falcon Crest 8 Kate & Allie 9 Hotel 10 Cagney & Lacey 11 Knots Landing 12 (Tie) ABC Sunday Movie 12 (Tie) ABC Monday Movie 13 TV's Bloopers & Practical Jokes 14 AfterMASH 15 The Fall Guy 16 The Love Boat 17 Riptide 18 The Jeffersons 19 Scarecrow & Mrs. King

Not a good omen for ABC....the week Loving debuted in 83 was the first time since April 1979 that CBS won the daytime ratings.

Y&R: Anthony Morina OUT as EP!
Agree. It is monotonous to watch. Y&R dug a hole for themselves by relying for years on the same characters as front burner and not properly nurturing the next generation. Premature SORASING (Abby, Noah,Charlie/Mattie/Fen etc) poor recasts (Billy, Mac) questionable story choices(basically making everyone a criminal) have brought us to today where the show is forced to use the same characters over and over and is scared/unable to rid themselves of dead wood and introduce interesting new characters.
