  1. It's difficult sometimes to know who was actually responsible for a certain program. Shogun for example aired when Silverman was in charge, but I have a feeling that a massive mini series like that may have been commissioned before he came on board. When Silverman came to NBC, their programming was in tatters. They had no successful comedies, as this had never been an NBC priority, even when Sanford was a hit. They were locked into commitment deals with Universal, which he felt was restricting as other producers would not bring ideas to NBC. They were running long form programming most nights of the week. Silverman believed series(especially comedies) were the key to success. He had a hit off the bat with Diff'rent Strokes but struggled to build on that. In his first couple of seasons he was constantly juggling the schedule and series were coming and going every few weeks. Then he decided to go for more balance and quality programming buoyed by the success of Hill St Blues. I think he felt the burden of expectations after super successful stints at CBS/ABC. He should have written a book about all of this.
  2. Yes, I believe Cap Cities went on a big cost cutting spree and that was reflected in the paucity of big mini series, tv movies , specials and midseason replacements.
  3. Plenty of women before her. Cicely Tyson, Liliaan Hayman,Ellen Holly,Janet Du'Bois etc. She wasn't even Days first female black character. Not to discount Ketty Lester in any way but as Carl said, another example of misinformation presented as fact.
  4. Eugene Smith AS THE WORLD TURNS ___ Berns 1960s Returned to this part in May 1970 Do we have any idea about this character-a doctor or policeman? -someone who would reappear from time to time.
  5. On June 23 1969, CBS took over Secret Storm from Roy Winsor Productions. Shortly after Chuck Weiss was appointed Executive Producer and Bernie Sofronski Assistant Producer. Ediie Layton was made music director and Michael Onofrio and Portland Paget were new directors. Rosemary Murphy and Barbara Rodell were new castmembers and Haila Stoddard and Judy Lewis returned as Pauline and Susan. Were there new writers also appointed -perhaps Bethel Leslie/Gerry Day? Or did they come later?

  7. Those barely legal California twink types do nothing for me, but to each his own. It kind of made Sue Ellen look a little desperate and foolish.
  8. Thanks for the correction re Miami Vice ABC had an awful season. Apart from Boss/Pains/Moonlighting on Tues every other night was failing. Hardcastle &McCormack was moved to Monday and didn't work there. The Insiders replaced Fall Guy on Wed and failed. Dynasty and Hotel were dropping. The Colbys did not help Thursday The Fri sitcom block was falling, bringing over Diff'rent Strokes was no help Saturday was a disaster with new shows like Hollywood Beat and Lime Street. CBS was competitive Sunday and Monday but Tues Hometwon was another in along line of 8pm failures. Wed Stir Crazy/Charlie& Co/George Burns/Equalizer failed to fire and previous strong nights Thurs and Fri were dropping as was Saturday. NBC were pretty much making all the right moves. The only misfires were Helltown Wed @9 Misfits of Science which failed to strengthen Fri and the much vaunted Amazing stories on Sun.
  9. Did anyone find Chris Atkins appealing? The story might have worked with an actor that Sue Ellen would be believably attracted to.
  10. Thanks for the reply but that didn't really make things clearer! On Search for Tomorrow under the Corringtons, the Tourneur/Sentell family was successfully integrated with Travis, Martin, Mignon, Lee, Renata etc but subsequent writers began dropping most of those characters. GL Doug marland introduced the Reardons with Nola and Bea and then slowly added new members Maureen and Tony while leaving others offscreen. Subsequent writers introduced Jim and Chelsea but by this time they were overshadowed and lost their importance as Springfilelds second family.
  11. Yes, he also worked at Ryan's Hope in the 80's. It makes you wonder how people who worked in daytime for years could still strike out. Guess like anything, there is an element of luck and good timing involved. I think it was Felicia Minei Behr who said something along the lines of 'if there was a surefire way of producing a hit soap, everyone would do it' I guess it goes back to the 1970 CBS program for finding good writers. Even the best producer can't work miracles.
  12. The Jack/Victoria thing was probably a(misguided) way to keep the Jack/Victor rivalry going. Maybe if Jack and Victoria had got together in a business sense that would have been more effective and achieved that goal. Instead they went with Billy/Victoria which I hated from the get go. Billy was a teen when Victoria was already established as a young adult. But then they started that melding of all age groups so that someone like Phyllis could be involved with Billy even though she was a mother herself when he was born. In terms of a recast who would you suggest for Billy? I dislike Jason Thompson in the role.
  13. In April 1970 CBS announced the appointment of Joseph hardy to oversee a writers development program for daytime serials. Hardy had previously worked on Love of Life, Love Is A Many Splendored Thing. He was also a respected Broadway producer. A syllabus was to be developed, outlining the processes for writing weekly outlines and scripting. The idea was to recruit and train novelists, writers from movies, theater, and primetime etc Although at the time there was a record number of serials on air, it was noted that majority of writers had been in the business for years, pointing out that ABC's new serials involved Agnes Nixon, Irna Phillips and James Lipton and that the average age of writers in the medium was higher than writers in other forms. With younger writers the hope was for new ideas for the genre. Don't know what came of this. Can't think of many new writers who began at CBS around this time.
  14. With Wallingford's past pretty much a blank slate, Lemay would have had plenty of options. I can see him coming from a wealthy family with snobby parents embarassed by him. A short arc story where they come to town for whatever reason and issues are thrashed out, where Wally asserts that Felicia and Cass are his chosen family. Could be some powerful drama, far preferable to 'zany hijinks'.
  15. My memories are hazy but Sarah Aldrich made no impression. I think they tried to ease her in but I don't recall her being in business mode at all. Once she was established it seems that she was given little to do. I guess the consensus was that she wasn't suitable from the get go and was back burnered to see out her contract cycle. Makes you wonder why she was chosen in the first place.
  16. Bill Bauer on GL. I don't know the reason he was killed off the first time. Did Ed Bryce want to leave? Anyway he came back in 77 but the story wasn't popular and he left town.
