Y&R: December 2024 Discussion Thread
I do wish the Jackson brothers had stayed into the 90’s to mingle with the Barber sisters while Tyrone gave Neil a big run for his money. Pity Tyrone got stuck with that messy story he had, and did Jazz even have a love interest besides being friends with Boobsie and pining for Amy himself?

ALL: Types of characters every soap needs
Oh goodness this is way off topic a year and half late but after just learning about da fling’s passing I actually asked whatever happened to poster Tess. Didn’t do too much digging to get an answer lol. Thank you both for sharing your memories I’m glad that I’m not the only one to remember her. It was a quirky board for sure but it was fun. LOL I still have Brian’s private email giving some juicy details about that when I inquired about why the boards were closed. I remember being shocked and laughing out loud when the real Strasser surfaced for a New York Times interview around the time of GL’s cancellation to share some GL memories and found out he was a successful children’s novelist. I wonder whatever happened to the imposter. There was a troll here a few years back that eerily reminded me of Sean-Paul especially when they stirred up big drama, but I don’t know if it was him. Christmas is the time I miss WOST the most for sure though. Thanks again for the laughs and memories have a good Holiday!

The woman with Andy was his mystery woman Faren, while it was Jazz who was dressed up as Santa. Gina had her share of Christmas miracles in that church didn’t she? 2 years later she would reunite with Rex there. Indeed it was!! I too wondering if anything got edited out. I don’t usually watch live just on DVR. I did notice a boatload of “Help the animals” and “Help the kids” commercials. Not to nitpick the good causes but they seem to be made even more depressing on purpose around the holidays.

@DRW50 Oh no I did not know danfling had passed away. I’m very saddened to learn that. Despite the quirks I enjoyed his message board back in the day (Anyone know whatever happened to regular poster Tess from there?) and learned a lot, as well from him here at SON over the years. May he rest in peace. @slick jones I also appreciate the hard work put into those cast and character lists. The ATWT and GL ones in particular actually helped filled some gaps for myself. A wonderful resource indeed.

LOL that is so true! 😂 Pratt’s era basically turned Y&R into Melrose Place circa 1996, with even more clumsy and frenetic pacing issues complete with some type of literal explosion occurring every month. Yeah it was gross. They crossed paths in the chaos after the bombing…both were presumed dead in the bombing but later were shown in some no tell motel in bed together with champagne like a month later.

Patty Williams, Paul’s sister. She was brought back in 2015 to be Sharon’s roommate at the mental clinic when Sharon was faking she was still pregnant and they were both being treated by a psychiatrist who also happened by some retcon ex of Nick’s who was obsessed with getting revenge on him. There a was a fire or something and Patty escaped to look for Jack, who she was still obsessed with herself. The Pratt era is sometimes best left unexplained lol. 😂

Oh yes I’m also actually glad the show appears to be set to revisit Ian and Mariah. I recall when Ian was last on he was primarily having a romp with Patty right after being responsible for the Towering Inferno bombing…actually I don’t remember even why they had brought him back for that, probably had something to do with Dylan and/or Nikki.

Yeah 2024 has been a double edged sword for daytime. Y&R got a 4 year renewal and Ed Scott back, but Griffith and Kent are still in charge. GH fans had their hopes raised and then crushed with the Patrick Mulcahey debacle. Ron was fired months ago yet his material is still airing and now Fake Rafe is back from the dead…? B&B keeps going further down into a bottomless pit. But it is nice to know daytime is not dead and we do have some much to look forward to in 2025. Thank you as always!

Don’t forget Carter brought TWO bottles of wine over to the Logans and shouting he needed a wine taster, with both Katie and Brooke being recovering alcoholics 🤣🤣 THAT was awkward along with Taylor agreeing with him “oh that’s an excellent point!”. I hadn’t noticed Zende’s weight gain until it was mentioned here and noticed as he was about to bust out of that tight shirt. Today he was wearing a giant oversized blazer kind of like Chandler Massey and Freddie Smith did when they had significant weight gains on Days back in 2019-20.

Knots Landing
I thought Abby getting back involved with Greg had potential, but it also felt like it was happening a couple years too late and seemed like it didn’t play out as planned. That final story with Ted Melcher was bizarre and out of character for Abby. We even got a red herring scene of Ted potentially killing Abby before she called his bluff and left town, a bit with her tail between her legs though. Still left Paige in danger though.

Y&R 12/23 and 12/24 Not a bad holiday week so far here. The Newman Christmas was actually nice to see. I’m glad Victor had finally come around to accepting Cole, thought it was so over the top for Victor try to banish Cole out of Victoria’s life like it was 1994. So I’m glad to see them have a joyous holiday in their beautiful rebuilt ranch. Appreciated the Abbotts having a warm Christmas as well. Highlight for me was Diane, Traci, and Ashley having awkward conversation at Society after doing Christmas shopping. Ashley promising to be civil for the holidays but still giving Diane the side eye was great. The scenes with Diane and Kyle were surprisingly touching while Jack and Diane’s were actually romantic and sweet. Finally, Phyllis and Sharon facing off together in the cabin. I thought initially this was going to be hokey, but it wasn’t. Both Stafford and Case did quite well here and were engaged. Again no giggles, in fact when Sharon told Phyllis off, for a second Stafford looked like she had her feelings hurt and was about to cry. Well done. Although I blame Nick for letting Phyllis in on her rampage. I would’ve added a scene where Faith, Mariah, and Tessa jumped Phyllis afterwards lol. Ever since Stafford came back, I always forget that at one time Phyllis and Lauren were good friends. Which is odd as the friendship went back to the Latham era, but it was strongest when GT of Phyllis was in role. I guess Lauren hasn’t had time for Phyllis’ games anymore.

B&B: December 2024 Discussion Thread
Alright let me get today’s 12/24 episode out of the way, especially after yesterday’s disgusting mess of Ridge not even giving Brooke time to get one word in. Time to bring back Rick, bring on Dino, and takeover Forrester with a “blood Forrester” clause. It was good to see Pam and Bridget again. I really wish Bridget would stick around. The flashback to Christmas 2022 was a bit odd, considering Brooke had just sworn off Ridge at the time. RJ was nowhere to be found at either the Logans or Forresters. Donna not even acknowledging Brooke’s absence or vice versa with Logan’s missing Donna. Just WTF. Heck Electra and Ivy weren’t even at the Forresters. Ridge getting his first PEN from Taylee has “stapler”, “mints” and “ten toes!” written all over it. I’m going to assume Bill spent Christmas at the commissary with Lunatic while Deacon chased Sheila around Il Giradino in a Santa suit. Meanwhile Thudley got a stocking full of coal on Christmas morning.

Your daily (or nightly) thought
Ah Christmas Eve is upon us again. Been a tough year in Soapland with losing so many icons and legends. Yet we were also blessed with show renewals, Knots Landing streaming, and Beyond the Gates. Going to spend some time taking nostalgic trips to Genoa City, Oakdale, and Springfield tomorrow. Hoping to make new Christmas memories in Fairmont Estates this time next year. 😊 Wishing all of my fellow wonderful SONers an absolutely fabulous holiday season this year!!! 💗🎉🥂 @YRfan23 @DRW50 @kalbir @Khan @Soapsuds @Paul Raven @Vee @BetterForgotten @Taoboi @AbcNbc247 @Maxim @Chris B @Antoyne @dragonflies @edgeofnik @janea4old @j swift @Faulkner @ranger1rg @Cat @DramatistDreamer @SFK @P.J. @Contessa Donatella @carolineg @titan1978 @dc11786 @BoldRestless @YRBB @Jeff

Knots Landing
Not one of the show’s finest moments or ideas. I adore PR on Days but good gosh his time on the show was just pitiful.

Knots Landing
Honestly I had completely blocked Abby and Michael York from my memory until finally seeing it all over again. WTF was that about it anyway? I wish it had stayed blocked in my head. 💀🤣 I did like the Williams family it’s a real shame of their fate both on the show and off it. I was glad to see at least KL give a chance to diversify, as opposed to Phillip Caprice’s resistance on Dallas about it.

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
Oh definitely agree. I don’t think FC ever got as bad as Dynasty’s Seasons 6-8 either, not even when it got boring or tiresome. Agree with this as well I like the CBS Friday night soap block they had for the decade.

Primetime Soaps
I remember both SOD and SPW blasting CBS in their editorials for not giving it a chance to develop and cancelling it so quick. I think one of the original concepts of a soap being set in Santa Fe could have been unique and interesting. That said the finished product wasn’t worth some of the initial hype. It definitely didn’t deserve the horrifically competitive time slot for its big 2 hour premiere though.

B&B: December 2024 Spoilers
Oh wow. OnTVTonight lists the Wednesday episode as New with an airdate of 12-25-24 so I thought there was actually going to be a new episode of B&B lol when I first checked. If I recall right I think the characters helped out at a homeless shelter for Christmas that year instead of the usual fare.

Y&R: December 2024 Discussion Thread
I blame Josh Griffith for the poor dialogue since firing those writers last year. Most of Y&R’s cast can act and do well, barring the exceptions of folks like Morrow, Ordway, and Stafford(who at least isn’t giggling since Scott’s return) lol. In the case of someone like Jason Thompson he still can deliver a good performance but I will say he’s overused and when he’s not fully involved he can give a lazy performance, which tends to double down on an already annoying character.

Ratings from the 1990s
Outside of Wings and technically Frasier and Seinfeld, Friends was the only other 8:30/9:30 NBC show of the 90s to be able to stand on its own. The quick collapses and plummets of shows like Caroline in the City, Boston Common, Suddenly Susan, Naked Truth, Veronica’s Closet etc. are embarrassing and laughable. I think the first instance in the 90’s of that happening was when #17 Dear John moved out its cushy Thursday 9:30 slot and how fast it flamed out(Although it still a much better quality show than any of those late 90’s shows).

Looking back...Primetime Ratings from the 80's
Thanks again! Always thought that the Knots Landing at #1 was an impressive feat and well deserved for one of Knots’ best cliffhangers and season finales. Falcon Crest had started the season off at #2 right behind Dallas I recall the Season 3 finale and Season 4 premiere were the most watched episode of the series. Not quite sure why CBS held back the Falcon Crest finales for the 84-85 and 85-86 seasons. They were finally aired together again in 1987. It was mentioned earlier that Falcon Crest premieres starting in 1985 were also held back a week because of Dallas having two hour premieres, to the show’s detriment, the lone exception being 1988 when season premieres aired the same night.
