SOAP OPERA FANS ARE SEEING STARSBy Marianne Costantinou Feb. 7, 1982 If Ellen Stewart, the long-suffering heroine of CBS's ''As the World Turns,'' is having second thoughts about asking her husband of 25 years to move out, she won't after this Wednesday. That's when she will meet Suz Baker, the carefree divorcee who will help her readjust to life as an unmarried woman. Suz, a new character on the daytime soap opera, will be played by Betsy Palmer, who has agreed to appear in the role for six months. Miss Palmer is best known to television audiences for her 10 years as a panelist on ''I've Got a Secret,'' and to recent filmgoers as the psychopathic murderer in the 1980 horror film ''Friday the 13th'' and its 1981 sequel. Last week, viewers of ABC's daytime serial ''General Hospital'' saw Marie Windsor, who played conniving girl friends and faithless wives in a score of films beginning in the late 1940's and through the mid-60's, take on the role of Vivian Collins, a physician who re-enters Dr. Steve Hardy's life after seven years. And last month, Gwen Verdon, the dancer who has won four Tony Awards for her portrayals of sweet-natured coquettes in Broadway musicals, was a prim, mean-spirited mother on ''All My Children,'' another ABC soap opera. These actre sses are only the latest in a procession of established actors and ce lebrated personalities who have had ''guest roles'' on one of the ne tworks' 13 daytime serials. During the past year, the list has incl uded Elizabeth Taylor, Milton Berle and Kansas City Royals' cente rfielder Amos Otis on ''General Hospital''; Sammy Davis Jr., Arlene D ahl and Rip Taylor on ABC's ''One Life to Live''; boxer Gerry Cooney on ABC's ''Ryan's Hope''; and Celeste Holm, Dina Merrill, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Henny Youngman and Dr. Joyce Brothers on ''Asthe World Tur ns.'' Also on ''As the World Turns'' will be Pearl Bailey and Ed ie Adams, who will guest star on Feb. 22. Why should such relatively successful performers want to app ear on the sort of television shows long disdained b y serious actors? What has happened to soap opera that has made it s uddenly attractive? There are doubtless a variety of reasons. One of the most important seems to be the fact that in recent years soap-opera-like shows such as ''Dallas,'' ''Falcon Crest,'' and ''Flamingo Road'' have proved enormously popular during prime time. This phenomenon has given a new ''respectability'' to the genre once derisively referred to by James Thurber as ''Soapland.'' Other explanations for the change include the following: For a number of performers, appearing in a ''soap'' can be a chance to try a different kind of role; for others, it offers exposure to a national audience at a time in their careers when such opportunities are few; for still others - especially older performers - the soaps provide a chance to be seen by the young viewers who watch daytime television in great numbers; and for well-known personalities with little or no previous acting experience, the soaps offer a sort of screen test. Finally, there are those who perform on soap opera simply because they genuinely enjoy them. ''It's better to be on a soap opera to renew your career and following than to be on any other medium,'' says Joan Fontaine, who earned an Emmy nomination for her five-day stint playing a theatrical agent on ''Ryan's Hope'' in 1979. The 64-year-old actress was one of the first stars to appreciate the career possibilities which soap opera might offer. ''It changed my image,'' says Arlene Dahl, who played Lucinda King, meddling mother of Mimi, the college co-ed, in 30 episodes of ''One Life to Live'' last December and January. Miss Dahl says that when her film and stage careers were more active, she had usually been cast as the ''glamorous, sophisticated woman who dresses well and has romances. I'd never played a family woman before.'' ''It gave my image an added luster,'' says Dick Cavett of his three cameo appearances on ''All My Children'' in 1979 and 1980. Mr. Cavett admits that he originally viewed these soap-opera appearances as exercises in ''respectable slumming.'' His patronizing attitude disappeared, however, when bags of fan mail began to arrive. A large number of letters were from teen-agers and college students who said they had never seen his talk show. ''I reached an entirely new audience,'' says Mr. Cavett. The relatively new-found popularity of soap operas, especially among teen-agers and college students, is an inducement frequently cited by these recent guest stars. Traditionally, Hollywood luminaries have disdained television soap operas as only for the has-been or the untried aspirant. (Among the more successful actors who recent broke into the business through soap-opera are Cicely Tyson, Martin Sheen, Richard Thomas, Barnard Hughes, Jill Clayburgh, Swoozie Kurtz and James Earl Jones.) There have been exceptions, however. In the mid-1960s, Joan Crawford filled-in for her hospitalized daughter Christina on four episodes of CBS's now-defunct ''Secret Storm.'' But, by and large, established actors steered away from soap operas, long the butt of ridicule both within and outside the television industry. Indeed, the twodimensional characters seemingly forever snared in convoluted plots have provided fodder for many take-offs - one of the best known being Carol Burnett's ''As the Stomach Churns'' skits on her weekly comedy series. Today, however, Miss Burnett is almost apologetic about her comedy routine: ''I used to be snobbish,'' she said recently. ''It's so easy to be so about things you don't know. Now I know better.'' The comedienne has become a convert to soap operas: She habitually watches ''All My Children,'' has done two cameo walk-ons on the serial, and even asked Agnes Nixon, its creator and chief writer, to create a dramatic role for her. When Milton Berle was recently asked why he agreed to play the role of theatrical agent Micky Miller on three episodes of ''General Hospital'' last December, he said: ''Anytime I get a chance to do a straight part, I jump at it.'' But when ''Mr. Television'' was pressed further and asked why he had ignored the medium's daytime cousin for so long, he admitted: ''I've always been very busy before.'' Others offer similar explanations as to why they have recently joined the casts of soap-operas. Miss Verdon, who was asked to fill in for Mi ss Burnett whose husband suddenly became ill, put it more bluntly: ''I wasn't asked before.'' Roughly three years ago, Jacqueline Smith, vice-president of daytime programs at ABC, was searching around for ways to attract new viewers to soap operas and to keep her network's soap operas in the ratings lead. One of her ideas was to induce stars to do guest spots. Her initial attempts at recruiting leading actors were not especially promising. Though she offered them ''meaty roles,'' even a party, her efforts were rebuffed, and the party canceled. ''I couldn't get enough stars to come,'' she says. But now, Miss Smith says her office recieves frequent inqueries from interested celebrities. According to M ichael Ogiens, vice-president of daytime and children's programs at CBS, a major reason wh y soap operas have become more palatable to stars has been the s uccess of such primetime serials as his network's ''Dallas.' ' Mary Ellis Bunim, executive producer for ''As the World Turns,' ' concurs. ''Daytime television has taken on a new credibility now that prime-time has successfully mimicked our formats,'' she says . ''I'm very pleased to see it happen,'' says Tony Geary of the trend. Mr. Geary, has played the role of Luke Spencer on ''General Hospital'' for four years now. ''We've always been considered the low-life, the dregs of the industry. Now, people have got to stand back and say 'Hey, maybe I've been wrong. Maybe acting on a soap isn't such a disgrace.' '' Indeed, for some of these celebrities, a guest role on a soap is viewed as an honor. ''Oh, it's very fashionable, darling,'' says Zsa Zsa Gabor, who played a mysterious Corsican on 10 episodes of ''As the World Turns'' last November. ''I'm very flattered.''

She was the daughter of Walter Henderson Shropshire and Virginia Kenney Smith Shropshire. She grew up in Bourbon County and graduated from the Paris High School in 1935, afterwards from Randolph-Macon Woman's College, in Lynchburg, Virginia. She earned a Masters Degree from the University of Kentucky's English Department. While there she was active in the Guignol Theatre in the Frank Fowler-Wallace Briggs eras. Next she attended Yale University's School of Drama. After three years of training there she received the Master of Fine Arts Degree in 1949, and left immediately for Greenwich Village in New York City with classmates who produced, directed, and acted in an early off-Broadway "hit," Strindberg's "The Father." She continued in New York for the next fifty years as a professional actress, a member of Actors Equity, the Screen Actors Guild and AFTRA (TV and radio). Over these years she appeared in numerous other off-Broadway shows, and on Broadway in support roles to such stars as Anthony Perkins, Frederick Marsh, and Melvyn Douglas. In leading roles she performed in regional theatres across the country and locally at Actors' Theatre in Louisville and at the Cincinnati Playhouse, and in Canada in Winnipeg, and notably in "Driving Miss Daisy" in Montreal. Later in her career she turned to film, was seen in most of the soaps, her longest run in "As the World Turns." Her movie credits include "Tootsie." "Green Card," "First Wives Club," but perhaps best remembered as the old aunt who gave "the recipe" to Julia Roberts in "Something to Talk About." In 2001 Miss Shropshire retired to Kentucky with her beloved late husband, George Winfield Hyde, an attorney in New York City and a Navy veteran in World War II. He died at their home in Paris in 2005. She was predeceased also by her brother W.O. Shropshire. She is survived by her sister Kenney Shropshire Roseberry (Clay) and by nieces and nephews: Walter Henderson Shropshire (Joan), David Pettit Shropshire (Barbara), Rogers Roseberry Bard‚ (David, late), Anne Lindsay Roseberry, and Sidney Clay Roseberry (Bonnie); and in the next generation by Patrick Shropshire, Susanne Shropshire, Virginia Bard‚ Berry and William Rogers Bard‚. She is also survived by her dear Hyde nieces and nephew, in the East and in the West: Valerie Carter Hyde, Andrea Hyde Booth and Richard Braden Hyde, and their children. In her retirement years in Kentucky she became a member of the Jemima Johnson Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution and of the Colonial Daughters of the 17th Century. She and her late husband transferred membership from their New York City Parish, Christ and St. Stephens, to St. Peters Parish in Paris. Her funeral service, in the care of Hinton-Turner, will be held at the Church at 2pm on Friday, May 3 and will be conducted by the Rev. Christina Brannock. I’m wearing a pink wig and an ill-fitting pink satin dress with three people waiting for me to sing. I believe I look quite ridiculous. My singing voice is even worse. I’ve been dreading my singing debut — the get-up-and-dance tune “Bing Bang Rock” — all morning, but there was no hiding now. The pianist starts the vamp that is my introduction and I make an impulsive decision to go all out, belt out the silly song and add in goofy dance moves to match. My voice strains as I try to hit the high notes, but I add a spin to distract my audience. It’s clear by this point, I wasn’t made for the part. If I had a day job, I’d keep it. The creators of “LazyTown,” a TV show for children, are looking for their next Stephanie, a girl who loves to sing and dance. From all over the East Coast, girls ages 12-18 came into the Three of Us studio in Chelesa to audition for the part. The show, recently picked up by the preschool-kids’ TV service Sprout, encourages preschoolers to be active and healthy in a fun, interactive way. Each show ends with a dance number to “Bing Bang Rock.” Stephanie is the show’s wildly energetic and cheerful host, inspiring the citizens of LazyTown to get moving. Julianna Rose Mauriello, a native New Yorker, has played the character of Stephanie since 2004. At 19, she has aged out of the role. One other thing: Stephanie is known for her signature pink wig and an outfit to match. Young, thin girls with a whole lot of talent confidently walk into the studio, and I have to audition next to them. Stephanie is 10 years old in the show, so in addition to being able to sing, act and dance, those auditioning must look very young. While I did some acting and dancing in high school, most of the girls I’m trying out with have unbelievable talent and are pros when it comes to the auditioning process. Talent aside, physical characteristics alone set these girls a level above me. This was the first time in my life I was too tall and too curvy. They come in without an ounce of fat on their bodies, and start singing “Bing Bang Rock” while kicking, spinning and dancing. An 11-year-old who seems quite nervous begins to sing and Alison Franck, the casting director, stops her. “Honey, I need you to theater-act. This is for young kids. Be animated,” she coaches. The girl loosens up and continues with her audition. Allie Gorenc, 15, sails through “High Hopes” in her musical-theater power voice, but Franck instructs her before she starts on the bubbly “Bing Bang Rock.” “Have the energy of a cheerleader. I’ll tell you if you need to tone it down,” Franck says. That’s just what Allie does. Her rendition of the tune puts a smile on all our faces. Iwatched dozens of auditions all morning, and then it was finally my turn. I put on the hot pink wing and the pink-striped satin dress. Each audition consists of three short scenes, two songs and two short improvisations. The process seems pretty simple, but once I’m on the audition stage, my nerves start kicking in. “How tall are you?” Franck asks. When I answer that I am 5-foot-4, Franck responds, “You’re too tall for Stephanie.” I start on the scenes with one of the casting members, Kelsey Lidsky, who has a talent for great voices that fit the scenes. That section is a piece of cake. What I’m really dreading is the singing portion. After hearing the song at least 30 times throughout the morning, I could probably sing it in my sleep. My singing is clearly under par, but we all laugh at my absurd performance in an outrageous pink outfit. I like to think that they were laughing with me, rather than at me. Apparently, my audition isn’t as tragic as I thought, since staffers tell me they’ve seen worse tryouts. The pianist, Eugene Gwodzdz, says: “You could be good with some voice lessons!” I know that I’ve come nowhere near the girls who have shown their stuff during the day, but it was fun to let go and be as goofy as I pleased for a good 30 seconds. Although I didn’t completely bomb at my audition, I’m not looking to start a career in show business. Plus, I don’t think a pink wig is really my look— unlike some of these girls. If they’re lucky, you may see some of them on TV or in musicals around town in the next few years: Allie Gorenc, 15, Manalapan, N.J. Allie played Sage Snyder for five years on CBS’ “As the World Turns,” and also participated in community theater. She has been singing for the past 10 years and dancing for the past six. Her take on “LazyTown”: “Everyone is themselves, and they’re all friends having fun. Plus, I like the songs.” Amanda Mengotto, 16, Forked River, N.J. Amanda just signed with an agency, so this is her first big audition. Before this, she participated in school plays. In addition to acting, Amanda has been playing piano and singing since she was little, and dancing since elementary school. Hannah Rosenthal, 18, Manhattan Hannah is part of the theater program at the University of Michigan and hopes to have a career in production. Although she sings, dances and acts, Hannah has the most dance experience, specializing in tap and ballet. Alexis Molnar, 15, Bedminster, N.J. Alexis has been in a Nike commercial and a music video for the artist Sia. She loves Stephanie because of her optimism. “She’s really happy-go-lucky,” Alexis says. “That song’s going to be in my head forever now.” Sarrah Long, 12, Dublin, Ga. Sarrah, who says she’s been dancing since she could walk, was especially excited for the “LazyTown” audition because she is a fan of the show. “Me and my little sisters used to watch it together. It was our favorite,” she says. Kristina Lachaga, 16, Flemington, N.J. Kristina played Baby Louise on the national tour of “Gypsy” for nine months. How much can she relate to Stephanie? Well, she has her own pink wig at home. Stephanie Ferro, 13, Middle Village Stephanie has been singing, acting and dancing since she was 3. Stephanie has been in “Life on Mars” on TV and the movie “When in Rome.” About the audition: “At first, I was really nervous, but then it was fun.” Nicole Bocchi, 13, Jamaica Estates On Broadway, Nicole was Jane Banks in “Mary Poppins” and Cindy Lou Who in “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” Even with her impressive background, Nicole found the lyrics to “Bing Bang Rock” tricky. “I was kind of nervous about the lyrics, but I’m happy with the audition,” she says. “LazyTown” didn’t find a new Stephanie at the audition, but they chose Catherine Missal, 12, of Somerset, N.J., to play a new character: Stephanie’s little sister, Tiffany.
