Stevenson, Jr., an actor known for roles in “Will and Grace,” “Dr. House,” “Ghost World” and more, died on Jan. 19 in Camarillo, Calif. of natural causes. He was 95 years old. Over his decades-long career, Stevenson became known for his supporting appearances in a range of films and television shows. The actor was perhaps best known for his role as Smitty the barman on the 1998 sitcom “Will and Grace,” which he appeared on until the show’s final season at the age of 89. He landed his first substantial role at the age of 76, playing a sheriff in the Disney film “Snow Buddies.” Stevenson also specialized in playing roles as a preacher, priest or pastor; “In his own words, his job was ‘marrying or burying people,’” his son, Scott, said in a statement. “As he told it, the panic-stricken director would invariably come to him to beg him to find a way to fill in unscripted space between ‘We are gathered here together’ (where he’d probably get his close-up) and the ‘amen’ at the end of the scene (where he usually wouldn’t). Stevenson admitted that he got pretty good at that.” Over the years, he also had roles in projects including “Murder, She Wrote,” “Men in Black,” “Glee,” “Bunheads” and more. Stevenson grew up in Piedmont, Calif. Before the acting bug bit at age 50, he earned an English degree from UC Berkeley after having served in the Navy during the Korean War. Following graduation, he began working in fundraising, chapter development and public awareness drives for causes such as Project Hope and the Epilepsy Foundation. He moved to Los Angeles in the 1960s, working on public service announcements and community events with Hollywood figures including James Stewart, Jack Lemmon and Henry Winkler. Stevenson is survived by two children, Charles III and Valerie, from his marriage to Barbara Keller, and by three, Catherine, Scott and William, from his second marriage to the late Hollywood agent and manager, Joy Stevenson. His then-girlfriend, Anne, broke up with him and started dating his classmate, Colin Barnes, who later got him expelled by telling the dean about his MCAT scam. Barnes eventually married Anne, fathered a daughter, Taylor, and started a successful medical practice. Albert became obsessed with getting revenge against Barnes, believing that his rival had stolen the life that should have been his. Years later, Albert attended a party where he encountered the Barnes family. He spoke to Taylor Barnes, who was complaining about her father never really being there for her, which gave him an idea. Albert knew that in medical school, Barnes had donated sperm to an artificial insemination clinic, and decided to track down Barnes' offspring, all teenage girls, through a website dedicated to reuniting donors with their biological children. He then met with them, claiming to be their father, and spent time with them before he took advantage of their emotional vulnerability, by dancing with them and seducing them into having sex. In his mind, he was getting back at Barnes for ruining his life, as well as giving his daughters the "father's love" they did not get from Barnes, a self-obsessed absentee parent. He impregnated one of his victims, Ashley Riggs, who gave birth to a son. "Father Dearest"One of Barnes' donor daughters, Cate Avery, finds out she was conceived with in vitro fertilization, and finds Albert online, posing as her donor father. She gets into an argument with her mother about meeting him and runs away. Her mother calls the police, and the NYPD's Special Victims Unit investigates her disappearance. When they find her, she says she was meeting her biological father, but refuses to tell them his name. Detectives Olivia Benson and Amanda Rollins find a posting on her social media about a "Donor 141", and then go to a sperm bank posing as a lesbian couple looking to start a family with Donor 141's sperm. Further investigation leads them to Barnes, who denies having met his donor children. The detectives meet three more of Donor 141's daughters, who say that Barnes is not the man they met. When questioned, Cate admits to having sex with the man she believes is her father, as do the others. Genetic testing proves that Barnes is their father, however, and they are all devastated to learn that they were duped into having sex with a stranger. Realizing that their suspect is a sociopath with a grudge against Barnes, Benson, Rollins, and their fellow detective Nick Amaro investigate Barnes' life to find someone who is trying to hurt him or his family. Meanwhile, Barnes' teenage daughter Taylor finds out that her father was a sperm donor and runs away to be with someone claiming to be her actual biological father - none other than Albert, who seduces her just as he had the other girls. Rollins and Amaro learn that Albert had been at a party at Barnes' house and was seen talking to Taylor. They also find that someone calling himself "Cyrano" had emailed her an MP3 of the jazz standard "My One and Only Love", a song which the other girls had told them their "father" had played while seducing them, and which Albert had played for Anne when they were dating. Albert suddenly texts Anne, saying the only way she will ever see Taylor again is if she meets with him. Rollins and her partner, Detective Fin Tutuola, arrest Albert, who demands to see Anne. During questioning, Albert admits to meeting with Taylor and Barnes' other donor daughters and rationalizes having sex with them by saying he was giving them "a father's love". He then tells Anne, whom he knows is watching through the two-way glass, that Barnes does not deserve her, and that he will only reveal Taylor's location to her. Anne agrees to speak with him, and even complies with his request to dance with him in front of Barnes so he will know what it feels like to watch her with another man. When she asks where Taylor is, he cruelly tells her that he killed her. However, the detectives eventually find Taylor at Albert's hotel, alive, unharmed, and demanding to see "her real father". Albert is then presumably convicted of and imprisoned for kidnapping and serial statutory rape. E. W. From his days of ducking theatre classes as an undergrad at UCLA, (where a no audition policy is strictly enforced), to landing his role on ABC’s hit comedy Notes from the Underbelly as Eric, a neurotic thirty-something parent at the age of 21, Sunkrish Bala doesn’t let the pitfalls of most young actors stand in his way of success. Age, experience and typecasting are just some of the hurdles Sunkrish has quickly overcome, and his work challenges the stereotypical cookie-cutter casting in Hollywood, paving the way for more actors to follow his lead. Born in Bombay, India and raised in San Jose, California, Sunkrish discovered his love for acting at the age of six, and began working steadily in local community theatres. By the time he reached high school, Sunkrish had already experienced typecasting of his East Indian descent. Challenging the limitations of typecasting, he and some of his fellow students created a non-profit theatre company, A ‘Shore, meaning “Noise” in Hindi that gave voice and attention to South Asian perspectives and culture. Not long after Sunkrish moved to L.A. to pursue his theatre degree at U.C.L.A. and shortly began acting in a starring role at the prestigious East West Players production of “As Vishnu Dreams.” A self-admitted worrier, Sunkrish didn’t let UCLA’s academic prohibition against auditioning slow him down. In between classes, Sunkrish hit the streets and booked several guest roles on hit television series such as Will & Grace and CSI: NY. This accounted for many “sick days” from school, and Sunkrish adds, “Given a choice: take a week’s worth of midterms or do an episode of Grey’s Anatomy…which am I going to choose?” But Sunkrish admits there were many roles he refused because of the limitations of stereotypical casting. “I’ve had to turn down a lot of roles. That’s of course much easier to do now, but when you’re just starting out and you can’t afford rent, it’s heartbreaking to have to say "no" to any acting work. Looking back, I’m so glad I’ve steered clear from those kinds of parts—the cab driver or the convenience store guy with the funny accent. I can sleep at night, you know?” Shortly after graduating, Sunkrish developed a fan following and caught the eye of television net work executives in his reoccurring role as Bashir from the Showtime series Barbershop. It wasn’t long before he was approached by ABC for the role of fussy perfectionist soon-to-be-Dad Eric on Notes from the Underbelly. The primetime series centers on a group of friends hysterically trying to juggle their lives as expectant parents. For Sunkrish, the role of Eric was doubly challenging. A natural rule breaker himself and a recent grad and bachelor, Sunkrish didn’t let lack of experience stop him from delivering one of the funniest, uptight characters of the ensemble cast. Sunkrish told LATP, “Eric is so very, very different than me. I started playing Eric on "Notes" as I was finishing up my senior year of college. Playing a thirty-something with a wife and kid when I was 21 and single was actually a bit of a challenge. There’s so much life experience that Eric has and I don’t. I think I learned the most about him over the course of the two years that we filmed the show. There really is so much to being a responsible parent that I had no clue about.” The last couple of years have been busy for Sunkrish. He recently starred opposite Indian screen legend, Anupam Kher and Dee Wallace in the feature film, “American Blend.” Sunkrish plays a young man assimilating in America but struggling to connect with his father’s Indian cultural views. He has also finished shooting indie horror flick, “Albino Farm” shot in the Ozark Mountains, starring a college student that stumbles on some cave dwelling mutants ala “Deliverance” meets “The Hills Have Eyes.” Both films will be released later this year. Fans of Notes from the Underbelly can breathe a sigh of relief now that the WGA strike is over. The cast, the crew and of course the writers are back to work and Sunkrish is glad to be back. Already playing well beyond his years with a comedic maturity and an infectious enthusiasm, Sunkrish Bala has already proven he’s got the chops and the guts to play any role in any situation and is an actor to watch for on the small and big screens. In an exclusive interview with MR Hunter of LATP, Sunkrish Bala shares his acting experiences and some of his other odder jobs. MR Hunter: Do you consider yourself to be a perfectionist like your character Eric on Notes from the Underbelly? Sunkrish Bala: About certain things, definitely. I’m a worrier. I constantly play out elaborate, imaginary disaster scenarios in my head. About inane stuff though, like: "What if my clothes aren’t ready at the drycleaners on time?" or "Did I over-inflate my front tires?" I may have mild OCD. MH: How did it feel when you were first approached by a fan? SB: Awkward. Because half of you wants to "play it cool" and the other half wants to be all excited that someone actually recognizes you, and what comes out is a weird amalgam of the two feelings. This is still very new to me! MH: You recently starred in the film “American Blend” with Indian screen star Anupam Kher. What was that like to be working with such a legend? SB: Amazing. Surreal. I was a sophomore in college at the time, and I had never worked professionally before. It was the first film I ever did, and it was opposite a man whose work I had grown up watching. He’s such a pro, had so much energy, and the man’s been in almost 300 films! I hope I have that kind of spirit and love for this work when I get to where he is. MH: Another film you worked on is a horror flick called ‘Albino Farm’ which is about cave dwelling mutants. Are you a fan of horror? What are some of the challenges you face as an actor working in horror? SB: Actually, I’m squeamish. I hate the sight of blood, and horror movies give me nightmares. I’m man enough to admit that. WORKING on a horror movie was a very eye-opening experience though. I finally understand and appreciate the appeal of these movies. They operate on a more visceral level than any other genre. They elicit the most basic of our emotions. MH: What are some of the challenges as an actor working in TV vs. film? Do you have a preference? SB: Well I haven’t really done a lot of film yet—a couple of indie features. I definitely think each medium presents its own challenges. What I like about TV, though, is the opportunity to gradually build complex characters over the course of a series. I like that we learned increasingly absurd details about Eric episode after episode. MH: Do you plan to do any more theatre in the near future? SB: I’d love to. I’m always on the lookout for good projects on stage. It’s the medium I know best, and I miss doing it. I’ve actually just optioned a stage play that I wrote, and hope to get it produced very soon. MH: Do you have any plans do start a similar theatre company like the one you started in the Bay Area (A ‘Shore) here in Los Angeles? SB: Wow, I actually hadn’t thought of that. I’ve been in college for most of my time in Los Angeles, and after that had been occupied filming Notes. I will give that some serious consideration. Though, there are fantastic nonprofit theater companies doing excellent work here already. Cornerstone Theater comes to mind. MH: When you’re not acting, what else do you enjoy doing? SB: Trying to say active. I love tennis, and have been playing for years. A buddy and I are currently trying to figure out golf, and I’m TERRIBLE at it. And whenever I can, I’m a big fan of travel. I love doing unabashedly tourist-y things—even within Los Angeles. MH: What other odd jobs did you do while you were a student? SB: I contributed my tears to an eye research lab on campus. That involved putting raw onions in a blender and then sticking my face in the onion fumes three times a week. Good times. I believe that authenticity can be a difficult word for an actor of color to process. Sometimes, we might wonder if our likeness is palatable and understood by white audiences. I used to believe that authenticity was straightening my hair to fit into certain roles, or to be more “sassy” so as to be deemed the funniest Black girl. As I matured, I realized that authenticity was coming into myself. Multihyphenates like Issa Rae and Tiffany Haddish (who are both L.A. natives, like myself) inspire me to sit into the pockets and reach into the depths of my likeness; to explore the awkward, oddball, insecure parts of me that I thought no audience could relate to. So that's what I brought to Trina Robinson, the character I play on “General Hospital.” As I researched the series, I wasn’t sure if my acting style could fit the cadence of the show. Could I do the dramatic looks or cry on cue? However, as I prepared for the audition and callback, I put all that aside. I tried to make Trina as genuine and raw as possible; instead of making her an over-the-top teenager, I made her a vulnerable 16-year-old who is loyal, independent, and fun. As I have grown into the role and into my other acting roles—such as Wolf on “Kipo and the Age of Wonderbeasts,” or Maya on “Craig of the Creek”—it has been important for me to continue the search for authenticity with each and every character I portray. How does every role I play relate to me? How can I make it relate to others? As I prepared for the role of Wolf specifically, even though I knew she was an action-packed superhuman, I also knew that she was a scared little girl in desperate need of friends, a pack of her own. Oftentimes, strong Black girls are masculinized and ostracized by society, so I knew it would be easy to fall into the trap of making Wolf more subdued. That wasn’t who she was, though. She was a tough warrior, and after hearing fans’ feedback, she seemed to be a role model for many young girls who wanted to be strong and fearless just like her. That’s when I realized the importance of bringing truth to every role, and why it is vital for artists to express themselves in the most vulnerable way possible. Niche ideas and unique characters create representation of underrepresented groups that are ready to see versions of themselves onscreen. This is why I hope to one day become a producer, to create a world and a community of oddball people, underrepresented minority groups, and tell and create new stories that aren’t often told. I want to be a part of a movement that creates a Hollywood where no actor of color has to ask themselves, “How authentic is too authentic?” My goal is to showcase the real, the raw, and the relatable. The group formed in 1992 and was known best for its performances on the ABC soap opera General Hospital, on which Kurth was a cast member. But the two found themselves settling in different areas (Kurth in Los Angeles, Taylor in Nashville), and finally went on hiatus in 2005 to focus on their families. “Life sort of intervened,” Taylor says. It was Taylor’s wife who suggested he retrieve his guitars from storage to share his songs with their children. He took her advice, which eventually led him to return to songwriting. His new songs found self-effacing humor in receding hairlines and broadening waistlines, an area of inspiration that he calls “midlife crisis comedy.” Taylor called his old bandmates—including bassist Lee Beverly, drummer Jim Bloodgood and lead guitarist Pat McCormack—and played them the tunes. After getting an enthusiastic response, Taylor flew to L.A. to demo the new material with Kurth. They then forwarded it to the other musicians, who added their tracks and made individual MP3s for Taylor to mix together. Taylor notes with amusement that, thanks to the band members’ home studios, the cost of his $300 plane ticket was the only recording expense. These guys are no strangers to the DIY aesthetic. Kurth & Taylor started out in 1992 as an acoustic duo playing California’s coffee house circuit before recruiting some of Taylor’s musical pals from high school to create a full-fledged band. Their big break came when Kurth’s storyline on General Hospital called for his character, Ned Ashton, to begin moonlighting as a rock star. He suggested that the producers bring in his real-life group to help portray Eddie Maine & the Idle Rich, his alter ego’s back-up band. The story arc spanned seven years and 40 performances, garnering them a Daytime Emmy Award for their song “Barefoot Ballet.” The lessons learned about the advantages of marketing for a mass medium weren’t lost on Kurth & Taylor. In the video for the aptly named “Let’s Get the Band Back Together,” a new track on their recently released compilation album, Greatest Hits? 1993–2010, they sing about reliving their youth by acquiring high-tech toys. The group illustrated the idea by dropping in visual references to Taylor’s favored pro audio brand, Sweetwater Sound (sweetwater.com). It was a calculated move that paid off—after Taylor sent a Sweetwater sales rep a link to the clip, the group was invited to spearhead a national marketing campaign appealing to middle-aged enthusiasts. He has been an actor and teacher for nearly fifty years and has taught at Dartmouth College since 1997. Experienced on both New York and regional stages, Rice appeared in episodic television, movies of the week and in daytime television roles. At Dartmouth he has taught Acting I and II; Speaking Voice for the Stage; and created the special topics courses Voice II—Freeing Shakespeare’s Voice; Shakespeare-in-the-Schools; and Augusto Boal's Forum Theater: Rehearsal for Living. In 2008 he was named Senior Lecturer at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth where he created and teaches the theater-skills based communication course, Communicating with Presence. He has appeared in Dartmouth productions as Leonato in MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING, Salter in Caryl Churchill's A NUMBER, the Narrator in ROCKY HORROR SHOW and directed THE DISTANCE FROM HERE by Neil LaBute. Additionally, James serves as departmental voice coach. In 2002 Rice created The Faculty Voice Group and for fifteen years facilitated term-long weekly meetings where faculty members could heighten presentation skills and share in discussions of commonly occurring challenges to communicating effectively. James is a graduate of the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York, was a student of Sanford Meisner, William Esper, and subsequently, Uta Hagen, at the Hagen-Berghof Studio. In 1991 he was designated by Kristin Linklater as an authorized teacher of her vocal approach for actors. James attended the University of Washington, Skidmore College (BS) and New York University (MA). Mr. Rice's teaching background also includes Skidmore College, State University of New York, Vassar/Powerhouse Theater Company, Berkshire Theatre Festival, Emerson College, and as a Visiting Guest Artist Master Teacher for the University of Pittsburgh MFA program. He is a founder of the Capital Repertory Theater in Albany, NY, where he appeared in more than twenty roles. As a member of Shakespeare and Company of Lenox, MA, he taught and acted for more than 15 years. Other regional appearances include Northern Stage, Boston Center for the Arts, O'Neill Theater Center, Pittsburgh Public Theater, Virginia Stage, The Empty Space, A Contemporary Theater, and Tony award-winning Intiman Theater, where he was a founding player. He appeared in Ibsen's GHOSTS with Joanne Woodward, directed by Michael Cristofer; played Vershinin in the New York premiere of Lanford Wilson's translation of THREE SISTERS; and was directed by Susan Sarandon in Steven Rotblatt's RUBBER CHICKEN at Ensemble Studio Theater. Most recently, Rice has served as associate director of Youth Bridge Global, a not-for-profit that produces Shakespeare’s plays and Broadway musicals with high school and university students in particularly under-resourced areas in formerly wartime countries and sites of genocide. Richmond was an actor of singular charisma, capable of summoning wild comedy and genuine menace, even within the same scene. In performance and rehearsal and in his everyday life, he brought intense dedication to his craft, cut with a wry, observant sense of humor and surprising tenderness. Richmond created performances no one else could, again and again, from the theatre’s first decade right up through its fifth. Richmond died just before Thanksgiving. He was 78. As people heard of his passing during the holiday season, different generations of EST were hit hard by the loss. Richmond’s career extended beyond EST, but when he was here, and you were here, he was part of how you knew the place. Zach Grenier remembers the first time he ever saw him. “My wife Lynn and I saw him onstage at EST, in Landscape With Waitress, a play by Robert Pine with Richmond and Wende Dasteel. This was in I guess 1981, and it was an extraordinary performance, a pastoral piece that expanded into this beautiful fantasy. “We saw Richmond and we said, ‘oh my God, who is this guy?’ So we waited in the lobby afterwards and introduced ourselves. And then we were friends for 40 years.” That play was an early instance of the impression Richmond built with audiences and critics. Mel Gussow singled him out in the New York Times, commending his “gusto” and calling him “an open book of imaginary conversations and glamorous delusions.” Gussow’s admiration of Richmond in the Times continued for years. In 1979 he praised his “series of deft, comic portraits” (in Neal Bell’s Operation Midnight Climax); in 1983 he called him “a master at expressing idiosyncrasies” (in Bill Wise’s Two Hotdogs With Everything at EST); and in 1989 (for Bell’s Sleeping Dogs), Gussow expanded further: “As he has demonstrated on a number of other occasions, Mr. Hoxie is an expert at mocking stuffed shirts.” Peter Maloney directed Richmond for the first time in 1980, in Slab Boys by John Byrne. “I cast some other guy and ended up firing him on the first day of rehearsal. And then here was Richmond Hoxie, exactly what I needed. I never once cast him and regretted it, ever.” 33 years later, Peter cast Richmond in Murray Schisgal’s Marathon one-act Existence. In that play Richmond paired with Kristin Griffith, his partner on many stages over the decades. “I remember Richmond, with his suspenders,” said Kristin, teasingly referencing Richmond’s signature style choice. (Less formally, he’d often sport a fishing vest.) “He had that very sly sense of humor, a kind of low undercurrent way with his lines. He had a great deal of grace about him, and was very generous onstage.” “He was very serious about the work,” said Peter. “He could be somewhat enigmatic.” “Did you know he was a composer?” said Kristin. “We did The Long Christmas Dinner by Thornton Wilder and he ended up doing the musical direction for that, and for a few other plays.” “He loved music,” affirmed Zach. “A consummate musician. He had a piano in his apartment. He composed for a Dracula musical once. If music was playing – he’d still be sitting in the room with you, but in his mind, he left the room and went to the music.” Richmond’s inimitable voice also brought him success in voiceovers and audiobooks – particularly the works of Milan Kundera, including The Unbearable Lightness Of Being. And he was a gifted director, particularly with A Blooming Of Ivy, a lovely piece by Garry Williams from the 2003 Marathon, featuring Jim Rebhorn and Phyllis Somerville. But it was as an actor that people knew Richmond best: on Broadway in I’m Not Rappaport; regionally doing Shakespeare at Hartford Stage and the McCarter, Tennessee Williams at A.R.T., Arthur Miller at Hartford; and in both All the Way and The Great Society at Arena Stage, as J. Edgar Hoover. On film he was in JFK and In The Still Of The Night; on TV he did All My Children, LA Law, Boardwalk Empire and the first three Law & Order series. Even with those credits, his work at EST looms large. Among many, many others: To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday by Michael Brady, from 1983, was one of the theatre’s first transfers, with a long run at Circle In The Square; Louis Slotin Sonata by Paul Mullin, from 2001, was a key play in the early days of the EST/Sloan Project; and Lenin’s Embalmers by Vern Thiessen, from 2009, featured Richmond’s remarkable portrayal of Joseph Stalin. Directed by Billy Carden, that cast included Peter and Zach, and both remembered his fondness for that play, and that role. “His apartment on Thompson Street was lined with bookshelves,” chuckled Zach. “Everywhere you looked were books, and records…and that picture of Stalin.” “We both got them from the set,” added Peter. “I got Lenin and he got Stalin. And he kept it!” Pam Berlin directed Richmond often in his early career, including To Gillian. “I remember that apartment was full of books and records, even then,” she said. “I also remember a story I heard about Richmond,” she added. “From the time of To Gillian. It was late in the run, I wasn’t there – but it was at curtain call, and the audience were cheering, on their feet, but that day people didn’t want to go back out. But, the studied part: maybe since he was a composer and lover of music, I realized it the night I saw Hox and Paul Austin in Percy Granger’s Vivien, both of them vivid, powerful. Hoxie’s performance was so full, rich, so specific—and—so orchestrated, not pro forma, but as music is filled with that inner structured solidity that then gives off these delicious flourishes and surprises; which brings me to “Theatre” with an “-re” ending, not the convenient and Americanized “-er”—Hoxie was of the traditional, hard-won, timeless and timely—Theatre—and what a joy and gift to know him, love him, and love working with him.” All of us at EST send our sympathy to Richmond’s wife, Bonnie; to his friends and loved ones; and to everyone who worked with him onstage, who heard him speak their words, or who ever got to be in a room with this artist, bearing witness to his art.
