Lorna Raver, who played Mrs Ganush in Sam Raimi’s hit horror Drag Me to Hell, has died at the age of 81. According to the Hollywood Reporter, her death was included in the “in memoriam” section of the Screen Actors Guild’s summer magazine. She died in May. Raver is best known for playing the woman who curses Alison Lohman’s bank teller in Drag Me to Hell, Raimi’s 2009 horror movie. The film premiered at Cannes and made more than $90m at the global box office. “We just wanted to tell the story of a person who wants to be a good person but who makes a sinful choice out of greed, for their own benefit, and pays the price for it,” Raimi said upon its premiere. It received positive reviews from critics, many of whom praised Raver’s performance. In her review for the New York Times, Jeannette Catsoulis called Raver “gleefully disgusting” while Variety’s Peter Debruge referred to her as a “memorable” villain. “It was a lot of fun,” Raver said in an interview at the time. “I mean it was gruelling sometimes but it was a lot of fun and Sam is terrific to work with … I was a little apprehensive going into it but I had a wonderful time.” Raver’s film roles also included the dark 1996 comedy Freeway alongside Reese Witherspoon, the Matt Dillon-led crime thriller Armored and supernatural horror The Caller. On TV, she was best known for soap The Young and the Restless, where she appeared on 26 episodes. She also had roles in NYPD Blue, Bones, One Tree Hill, Weeds, Nip/Tuck, Star Trek: Voyager and Grey’s Anatomy. She also appeared in many off-Broadway productions and was a prolific audiobook narrator. “I can’t say exactly why I wanted to become an actor – the yen was just always there,” Raver said in a 2011 interview. “It was only after I became an actor that I learned what I love about it: I love the chance to live multiple lives and I’m stimulated by the work of developing the discipline, skill and openness one needs in order to inhabit those other lives.” She retired from acting in 2014. “I always had this idea that women of a certain age just shouldn’t even bother to try and make it in Hollywood, and I have been pleasantly surprised and blessed by all the work that has come my way,” she said in 2009. Kay L. Peters, 83, died May 9, 2025, from respiratory failure. Kay was born and raised in Wooster, Ohio where she began her interest in the arts, dance and debate. While in high school she ran her own dance studio and performed at Canal Fulton Summer Theatre. She was valedictorian of a class of 500. Kay graduated from Northwestern University in 1963 majoring in theatre. She met the love her life, Richard, at college, and they married in 1963. She continued her acting pursuits by performing in dinner theatres while Richard completed his law studies in Chicago. Moving to New York City, she landed a lead role on Broadway, a role on Days of Our Lives, and numerous TV commercials. While in Hollywood she did many guest appearances on Little House on the Prairie, It Takes a Thief, The Bold Ones, and CHiPs. She also did One Life to Live and half a dozen movies. Pausing her career to start a family, having daughters Tara (1971) and Tracy (1973), she had to focus on her early skills of teaching. The seeds were planted for a shift in career to communication skills training. In 1978 Kay became a member of the Board of Directors of Screen Actors Guild and was asked to chair the new Telecommunications Committee. She had to interface with Congress and ultimately testified before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on copyright issues opposite Ted Turner. Watching others testify cemented her shift to teach communications skills. Kay developed those skills by working for a small boutique firm for several years. Opening her own company in 1994, Kay trained CEOs, scientists, lawyers, doctors, management consultants, IPOs launches, investment bankers, and occasionally children of clients' college bound. Kay worked both domestically and internationally. The same passion Kay had for acting and communication training, she had for her family. She always had time for her daughters and husband. Kay was lifelong Presbyterian and member of the Brick Presbyterian Church. Kay started each morning in saying: This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it (Psalms 118:24). Kay is survived by her husband, Richard, their two daughters Tara (Michael) Peterson and Tracy (Jonathon) Herpel, grandchildren, Xander, Beau, Audrey, Alistair, and a sister Joan (Maurice) Moore. He spent each night in the local YMCA until he reached California. During his early days he worked as a waiter, shoe clerk, taxi driver, day laborer, and solo singer for funerals and weddings. Greg soon enrolled in a drama school that met at night. A talented agent spotted him in a play and offered to represent him. His agent got him a few bit parts in movies which enabled him to join the Screen Actors Guild. To go along with his now professional status, he changed his name from Bernard Mattox to Gregory Walcott. His mother in Wilson was a good, Christian woman. She knew that Dale Evans was also a good Christian woman, so she wrote to Dale Evans and told her that her son had moved to Hollywood to break into the movies. She requested some advice from Dale for her son. A few days later, Gregory received a handwritten note from Dale Evans inviting him to the Hollywood Christian Group. This was a group of Christians who worked in the entertainment industry that met weekly at the home of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. When Greg went to this meeting he met Roy Rogers, Dale Evans, Rhonda Fleming, and many film technicians. He also met his future wife at one of these meetings. Greg’s first professional acting experience came with a bit part in Richard Whitmark’s 1951 film, “Red Skies of Montana.” His first important role was in the movie “Battle Cry” in 1954. Greg was mainly a character actor who had an excellent reputation. Some of his more famous movies include “Texas Lady” in 1955 with Claudette Colbert, “Mister Roberts” in 1955 with Henry Fonda, “Eiger Sanction” in 1971 with Clint Eastwood, “Prime Cut” in 1972 with Gene Hackman and Lee Marvin, “Midway” in 1976 with Charlton Heston, “Every Which Way But Loose” in 1978 with Clint Eastwood, “Norma Rae” in 1979 with Sally Fields, and many, many more. In all, Greg appeared in 50 movies. He co-starred with Tony Curtis in 1961 in “The Outsider.” He was the star in the 1967 movie “Bill Wallace in China.” Greg had another famous role with which most movie “buffs” are very familiar. He was in the cockpit scene of the 1957 movie “Plan Nine From Outer Space.” This movie is widely considered the worst movie ever filmed, and it is now a cult classic. In addition to his 50 movies, Greg also appeared in over 300 television shows. He has acted many times with James Gardner in “Maverick” and Lorne Green in “Bonanza.” He starred in the detective series “87th Precinct.” In later years he worked regularly with Angela Lansbury on “Murder She Wrote.” Gregory Walcott has worked with most of the major stars of Hollywood and has won critical acclaims as one of the outstanding character actors in Hollywood. By having his work highly respected in the movie industry, he has enjoyed steady employment for many years. Jim McLarty, secretary of the Board of Trustees of Brevard College, has a daughter, Eileen Fulton, in New York who plays in the TV series “As the World Turns.” She is in her 11th year on the CBS daytime drama. Next month she’ll have a book and record out. The book is “How My World Turns” and is about the kooky experiences in her life. The album, on the Pan Label, is “The Same Old World.” From the Cape Cod Times 'As the World Turns' star to headline festival JOHANNA CROSBY,STAFF WRITER 5/14/2003 Several years ago, success slapped soap star in the face. She was standing outside Lord Taylor in New York City when a woman dressed in a Chanel suit approached her. "Aren't you Lisa?" the woman inquired. She was referring to Fulton's soap-opera character. Expecting to sign an autograph, Fulton searched through her purse looking for a pen. Suddenly, the woman slapped her on the arm. "I hate you!" she screamed, then walked away. "At first my feelings were hurt," Fulton recalls. "But then I thought, 'What a great compliment.'" Since 1960, the petite actress has played Lisa - whose last name, at various times, has been Hughes, Shay, Grimaldi and Miller - on the CBS daytime soap opera "As the World Turns." Lisa is a character fans have loved to hate. "I was the original bitch," Fulton says with a laugh during a recent phone interview from her Manhattan home. Fulton was well ahead of her time. She set the trend for such soap opera vixens as Erica Kane on "All My Children" and Sami on "Days of Our Lives." Before Fulton originated the role of Lisa, she says, "They never had a bitchy person who lasted on a soap opera. They usually killed them off." MultitalentedFulton, 69, will show another side of her talent Saturday as the headliner for CabaretFest 2003 in Provincetown. She's always had a parallel career as a singer, playing engagements in many top nightclubs around the countr starring in several one-woman New York shows. Her cabaret act is a musical mix of funn sad songsby the Beatles, Richard Rodgers, Cole Porter, and her favorites, Alan and Marilyn Bergman. . She spices it up by telling outrageous stories. Fulton loves doing cabaret because it allows her to be "one on one" with the audience. "They need to know you. You have to be able to touch them and must not be afraid to bare your soul." Fulton's also performed in theater. At one point she worked mornings on "As the World Turns," afternoons in matinees of the Broadway production of "Who's Afraid of VirginiaWoolf," and evenings in the off-Broadway musical "The Fantasticks." She also has a number of regional theater roles to her credit. "They don't see me as Lisa once I'm on stage," she says. She's also a prolific writer, co-authoring two autobiographies, "How My World Turns," and "As My World Still Turns," six murder mysteries, and a romance novel. Fulton wrote her books during lulls in her acting career. Not surprisingly, her books revolve around soap operas. "I was angr (in my books) I killed producers, directors and other actresses," she says, laughing. Good girl gone badCast to portray the wife of good guy Dr. Bob Hughes, Lisa was supposed to be the girl next door, Fulton says. Lisa evolved into an ambitious and devious social climber who craved excitement. Eventually, Lisa divorced the upstanding doctor, engaged in several affairs and married seven other husbands, becoming a wealthy woman in the process. Through the years, however, she has tried to work her way back to Bob. "Someday that may happen," Fulton. Don Hastings, the original Dr. Bob, still plays the role. Fulton brought the character to prime time in the series, "Our Private World," which ran four months in 1965. She's won an number of awards, including the Soap Opera Digest's Editor's Award in 1991 and Best Actress in 1970 by Daytime TV Magazine's reader's poll. In 1998 she was inducted into the Soap Opera Hall of Fame. But what she's even more proud of is that people named their babies after Lisa "because they wanted their daughters to be survivors." She credits Lisa's long-lasting appeal to her glamour and feistiness, two traits the actress helped develop. In the 1970s, Fulton says, she threatened to quit the show unless her character could be wealth the actress could choose her own wardrobe. She ended up paying for designer clothes out of her own pocket. "I wanted to bring glamour to daytime," Fulton explains. "People who live in the sticks look forward to seeing what Lisa is going to do and what she's going to wear." She left "ATWT" in 1983 "because I hated what they were doing to my character. She wasn't fun anymore." She returned a year and a half later when the writers punched up her the story line. She now appears only occasionally on the soap. Her character no longer has a main storyline, much to Fulton's chagrin. "They are doing so much stuff with the kids (younger actors)," she says. The actress still gets letters from fans who miss her on the show.
