  1. I just came across that notorious episode where Lily is singing that Bonnie Raitt song I Can't Make You Love Me (If You Don't) I laugh because I remember the reaction her rendition of that song (and the manner in which it wast staged on this episode) had on this board.
  2. I wasn't a member of this board until a few years ago, so it's possible this article was posted in the past, so I ask, has anyone seen this article before? Because of the author is writing from a personal standpoint, I think that makes it pretty interesting, despite the typos. Douglas Marland: A Personal Remembrance of Soaps' Greatest Writer Just curious but does anyone know the last episode that Marland wrote before he passed?
  3. Funny that in a podcast that I listened to a week or so ago, Andy said that seeing people like Roger and Ferrer playing well into their mid thirties (and not too far from their career high) was inspiration to him and that Roger, in particular proved that he could play past his early 30s with a family. Hmm, I wonder what's changed from then to now. Novak opened up his new Vegan restaurant in Monte Carlo and promptly lost his first match of the tournament. Berdych who was also photographed at the restaurant as he was in attendance at the opening, lost his match today as well. Oh, here is WADA's dubious statement to their stakeholders about meldonium. I wonder what the real decision will come down to? https://www.wada-ama.org/en/media/news/2016-04/wada-statement-on-meldonium-notice-issued-to-stakeholders
  4. God, I was just thinking about her because yesterday was Equal Pay Day and remember how I watched a documentary over the weekend on how she help lead the charge to tank the ERA. Someone should've ousted her behind a long time ago! The GOP can keep tearing their organization to bits til there's nothing left, for all I care.
  5. Looks like the WTA is getting their money maker (I was going to say cash cow ) back: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/reuters/article-3537513/Doping-WADA-announces-meldonium-amnesty.html If it wouldn't have been this, it would've been some other way. Those matches with Sharapova going up against Mladenovic and Cibulkova are going to be interesting, given what they said about her.
  6. You're the 2nd person to suggest Martina as a good coach for Taylor. There is merit to that suggestion, I would just wonder about the mix of personalities. If Taylor is in any way feeling low in self esteem, well Martina can be blunt...but otherwise, she would make a great fit, technically. As strictly a mentor (not a coach), I think Davenport would be very understanding as Davenport was quite overweight at the onset of her pro career. She was very outspoken in her criticism toward the USTA when they revoked Townsend's right to compete at the USO as the #1 ranked Junior, several years ago. Davenport was also very candid about how she changed her mindset about her weight and finally decided to slim down when she was on the Tour. If Fogs was tanking...! Honestly, I don't know Flavia is going to do with that guy, he must be some kind of wonderful under the sheets!!
  7. The narrative that the press likes to cling to is that the Clinton campaign is messy and undisciplined but that was the campaign in '08. I think her campaign has been fairly discliplined except for Bill and surrogates are messy most of the time, all of the candidates have messy surrogates, well except for Cruz because he doesn't have any.
  8. Per usual w/Hillary though, the ill-conceived "CP time" joke with DeBlasio threatens to overshadow this. Maybe Hillary needs to ban anyone named "Bill" from being a surrogate. I don't think that's a big deal. It was an awkward joke but it was obviously scripted. I think the point was to remind everyone that DiBlasio's wife is black. The irony is that Chirlane is always on time while Bill is chronically late. It actually is a real problem for him, his wife has taken separate transport so that she's on time! I think it is a tempest in a teapot, for the record but it is what most people in the NYC area are talking about today, rather than this interview with the Daily News.
  9. The sad irony is that she used to be coached by Kamau Murray who has been coaching Sloane Stephens, who has now won 4 tournament titles since her partnership with Kamau began last spring/summer. Although I didn't see the match, I read that Fognini got booed (what else is new?!) in his match vs. Lorenzi. Someone commented that it looked as if he may have been slightly injured but the scoreline is weird as hell! Given all the match fixing rumors involving Italian players, I expect speculation to begin about now.
  10. Per usual w/Hillary though, the ill-conceived "CP time" joke with DeBlasio threatens to overshadow this. Maybe Hillary needs to ban anyone named "Bill" from being a surrogate.
  11. Good on Gail, who is trucking at 69 and has no intention of stopping but this needs to be a wakeup call for Taylor Townsend. Just a few years ago, Taylor went to the 3rd round of the French Open and now she has to qualify just to gain entry into Challengers! That feels sad to me.
  12. Taylor Townsend is playing Qalifying matches at an ITF $25K Challenger. Her next opponent? 69 year old Gail Falkenburg! Here's a picture taken from 4 years ago: Whats this all about? It looks as if the Czech Tax Authorities took back their statement about Berdych. It appears it was made in error. I think it was the fault of the Czech Tax Authority as I read that Berdych's name isn't actually in the papers. Kind of careless to 'out' someone like that and to add insult to injury, they didn't check the name?
  13. I know we were talking earlier about how depressing 1992 was and I have to say that I found many of the '92 episodes snoozy-worthy but the episode where Marland juxtaposes Andy & Courtney's wedding with the revelation about Aaron's paternity to Lily with Iva, Julie and Lucinda present at Lily's house- each having to admit their culpability in the cover up was a darn good episode and completely watchable from beginning to end. There's actually a complete episode online that was uploaded recently. I think previously it was posted in segments but it's nice to watch the entire episode and not chopped up. For anyone interested it's dated December 21, 1992
  14. I agree with this. He has mixed up some facts between state and federal government policies (whether this is an intentional obsfucation or not intentional is another matter). Bill can be an extremely talented politician but man, oh man, does he lack discipline! Stick to the script, Bill unless you want to tank your wife's chances.
  15. I read the original interview and there was no manipulation by the Daily News journalist. Bernie did that to himself by his astounding display of total lack of depth on the issues. Anyone with a sense of logic who read the original interview realizes this unless they're in denial.
  16. Yeah, it does make sense that Marland could've burnt out. He could've even been experiencing health problems from this time. I wonder whether a period of serious rest might have made any difference in his health, in his ability to have eventually make his way back in the long run. Pure speculation on my part.
  17. Whats this all about? A pretty big scandal, in short. I tend to rattle on sometimes so maybe an audiovisual may be more entertaining Here's a link to a CNN interview with one of the journalists (almost 400 journalists worldwide worked on this in secret, communicating on what I believe to be an encrypted online portal) who got the anonymous tip about this law firm Mossack & Fonseca who had all these files (almost 40 years worth) on various political leaders, celebrities and wealthy who were using their firm to hide money and financial assets. In some cases it is legal (although mostly unethical), while in others illegal (drug kingpins or dictators squirreling away embezzled funds). http://www.cnn.com/2016/04/04/world/panama-papers-explainer/ Oh, and in the sheer volume of data leaked-- this dwarfs Wikileaks!
  18. The loss of Brian Bloom and Andrew Kavovit were not good for the show down the road, although I felt as if Kavovit's loss was felt more sharply at the time because the character seemed to have a good amount of story left. Interestingly enough both Dusty and Paul were integral to Andy's life at one time or another and within 4 years of both characters being gone, the Andy character seem to flounder, especially once the marriage with Courtney ended. PGP made so many wrong decisions, it often seemed like they went out of their way to damage what possibilities they had to put together a good quality show in those last 12 years or so. I think those moments when Paul's plane was going down, it was obvious that Scott Hoylrod was capable of playing a darker more complex character. TPTB just wanted to shaft him so they could bring in Roger Howarth who was hammy as hell! I guess hammy was what Sheffer and Goutman were looking for in a male lead. Speaking of ineffective leading men, I'm trying to see what Marland saw in Rex Smith. I'm watching the whole intrigue of the aftermath of the Carolyn Crawford murder and the paternity of baby Jennifer and it seems to me that the Darryl Crawford character is the weakest link in that entire storyline. It makes Frannie look bad because I'm trying to assess what a more mature, professional Frannie would see in Darryl?! Babs had a ONS but Frannie married this guy?! Once Barbara left town, I felt like skipping most of Darryl's scenes, even the ones with Frannie in them because they are blah and repetitive. I was trying to analyze what could've gone wrong with the character (besides underwhelming acting) and I think that there was too much story being absorbed all at once by a relatively new character. Marland seemed to do the best with new characters when introducing them on a modest scale, not overwhelming us w/a newbie, having them even tag onto an umbrella story with other characters where they are secondary or tertiary, letting us get a feeling that we know the character before springing them on us as a leading character.
  19. So apparently, Tomas Berdych is named in the Panama Papers: http://www.radio.cz/en/section/curraffrs/czech-pm-calls-for-probe-into-activities-of-czechs-on-panama-papers-files
  20. Someone may have mentioned this previously but OLTL's Sean Ringgold will be appearing in the upcoming Netflix series Luke Cage. Also, he and girlfriend/wife? (who works at WPIX in NYC where the news was just announced) just had a baby girl named Skylar.
  21. I just saw on the NYC news that Sean Ringgold and his girlfriend/wife (who apparently works at WPIX 11, where the story aired) just had a baby girl named Skylar.
  22. Maybe the surface just wasn't great for Dimitrov's game? Monfils tends to excel on clay courts and from what I've heard, Miami is playing quite slowly this year. I guess I saw that match completely different than you, I thought it was one of the better quality matches on the men's side. Grigor has only beaten Monfils once in their 5 meetings so perhaps that played into it as well? Well, so far, Kei's not limping in his match vs. Kyrgios. He seems quite focused. ETA: Kei really handled Kyrgios very efficiently. Here's to hoping he doesn't get dragged by Djokovic! Seriously, someone needs to beat Djokovic for once.
  23. I'm sighing at Monfils blowing 5 Match Points, even though I like Kei too. Honestly, though, do we see Kei doing anything other than limping into the Semis against Nick?
  24. ITA. Hunt Block would have made a terrific Rick Ryan. He had that naturally smarmy, untrustworthy persona and had the character and storyline been well written, Rick Ryan could've have caused more conflict and still ended up with Roseanna at the end of ATWT's run. If only ATWT had had competent writers in its last decade. Sigh. I also thought of Henry as being somewhat asexual except for his pairing with Vienna-- she had enough sex for the both of them! Had the writers been competent, they could have played off the fact that most people in Oakdale assumed Henry was gay until Vienna happens. Has anyone ever seen the documentary Do I Sound Gay? It talks about the misperceptions people have about sexuality just based on certain traits that are assumed to reflect either a homosexual or a a heteronormative character. Then again, ATWT preferred to put Henry in drag for laughs, so not much nuance there.
  25. I came across this on Twitter and knew I had to post this somewhere! “…. and I’m pursuing a giant penis with a Donald Trump mask….” Greatest intro *ever* to a documentary (C4 in UK) pic.twitter.com/GrhWk5Nm50 — TheObamaDiary.com (@TheObamaDiary) March 31, 2016 That's a very apt description.
