Ryan's Hope Discussion Thread
Thanks for sharing this. I am always wondering why they switched the names for Kathleen and Siobhan and why they decided not to have Siobhan as a nun. And if Ramona was supposed to be a bigger character than she turned out to be. The description of Nell is also a little off. There's also no mention of Jill. Or of Nick Szabo.

ALL: They Almost Became
Yeah, there was just that few month gap. Janine lucked out I guess (and so did viewers...).

Gabrielle switched the babies because she felt that Michael would fall apart if he lost his child, as his wife had just died as well. While the story wasn't as good as the baby switch with Karen, Jenny, and Katrina, it did have some strong performances from the actors involved, and a very dramatic series of aftershocks (which soaps don't do now), such as Gabrielle working at Wanda's and falling apart, Gabrielle being a pariah, and Gabrielle's trial, which had a classic moment where Megan ran out of the court when Max admitted he still loved Gabrielle. I also thought this story was good use of Brenda, who was a tough yet vulnerable heroine, which soaps always need. Unfortunately her story after this, the one where Michael Grande was drugging her, seems atrocious. Badderly was named worst story of the year by SOD - I guess part of that colors my thinking. But I should check it out.

One Life to Live Tribute Thread
December 25, 1990 Soap Opera Weekly. Interview with Maggie DePriest. I'm not writing the actor names because you already know those, but this Karen Witter Tina, Nick Walker Max, and Matthew Vipond Kevin and Chris McKenna Joey. Also mentioned is that Neith Hunter (Laura), Anna Gardino (Gloria) and Audrey Landers (Charlotte) were leaving, although Charlotte was always short-term. Linda Thorson (Julia) was on recurring. Who was Gloria?

The worst part is that Viki disowned Tina for her crimes (many of which she had to do at threat of death to her family) and she barely batted an eye at Todd raping one of her close friends, lying about her daughter's mental illness, and being complicit in her two daughters almost dying and one of her daughters having a stillbirth. Only a few months later she was trying to get her brother a girlfriend, and singing his praises. It was just awful

The story was bad camp (an RC specialty) and Tina had little to do with anyone who mattered to her, besides boring Sarah. She spent her last few months in scenes with Bree Williamson at her all time worst. Just awful. And her exit was a cheap shot, damaging the character of Viki significantly.

There's a good chance Kelli might have stayed if she'd wanted to - supposedly she quit because of issues with Paul Rauch. She had played a similar character on Ryan's Hope. In some ways it was a risk to bring Andrea back, as she had only ever played Tina as an ingenue, but she was so wonderful at capturing all sides of Tina - most of all that vulnerability that made you care about Tina even as she kept making stupid decisions. She's such an underrated actress and Tina is such a poorly treated character. It's sad that she probably won't even be back for the end.

1990, because Cat talked about it in a 1993 soap magazine and said she knew Karen Witter would get it.

As The World Turns Discussion Thread
The problem I had with Dunphy was that the character they gave her should have been more than just a bimbo schemer who was misunderstood underneath. She consistently seemed to throw away opportunities, although the shocking performances from Kaba and List probably didn't help matters. They trashed Susan's character for what amounted to the most generic "bad" girl possible. FMB based the heart story on her husband. While it was a good story, it only seemed to last for about two weeks and was then almost totally forgotten, aside from one episode where we saw Kim at WOAK dealing with the constant ticking. I always felt like the episode with Jennifer was a response to how criticized and unpopular most of FMB's first year at the show was...although looking back, that type of attempt to appease fans was better than just sneering at them, as Goutman did.

Emmerdale: Discussion Thread
Kelly's going soon. I guess she came back just long enough for Emmerdale to trash her character. Fun. http://www.digitalspy.com/soaps/s12/emmerdale/news/a319328/adele-silva-bows-out-from-emmerdale.html

Thanks - I'm glad the show hadn't completely forgotten about Sandy/Bob by then. I was watching the 1978 ATWT episode with someone and they kept saying they recognized the women who played Sandy and Mary, yet they didn't really know any of the credits for Kelly Wood or Barbara Rucker on IMDB. Were either of these ladies in anything else big that isn't credited on IMDB? Watching that again I'm kind of reminded at how Mary seems slightly more glamorous than the role...later on she seemed kind of dowdy. I enjoyed some of Nancy's birthday episode. I tuned back in to see it and was annoyed at how much time was spent on the ultimately pointless and annoying yacht sinking. I loved when Penny said, "Who ARE these people?" I always wonder if that was ad-libbed. This was also the last regime that cared about bringing back Pat Bruder. Goutman took Valente's path of just pretending she never existed. Ellen being there, even for a few appearances a year, would have given so much weight to the plot-driven and annoying rewrites with Allison and Susan. Ellen trying to help her great-granddaughter and being in conflict with Susan, yet also seeing Susan's point of view, and listening to Emily's fears, etc. Instead it was just shrieky Dunphy all the way. Helen Wagner gave an interview around the time of the birthday episode complaining about what had become of ATWT. Still, I think that she was probably grateful, and it's some kind of a miracle that P&G/CBS never tried to write her out again after the first time.- All My Children Tribute Thread
