But going back to rewatching it in real time, Sally was building it slowly, but there always felt like there was wiggle room for it to be manipulation on Graham's part for revenge about Dina. Almost like Sally wasn't sure if she would completely go there with Alzheimer's yes.

I would have preferred they move slower with Dina's dementia. Mal Young wasted years of Marla Adams performances.

Frankly, she shouldn't have gone there, and neither should have Mal Young. I've said it before, and I'll say it again: stories about dementia, or any other terminal illness, do not belong on daytime. For one thing, they're depressing. For another, because you know at the start how the story will end, you're basically watching somebody die, and then what?

We all can agree that Ron Carlivati would be a terrible choice for JG's replacement, but let's be real, folks: who else is there? TPTB won't invest anymore in new talent, and everyone else with HW'ing experience has either died or left the business, with no desire to return.

"But what about [enter still employed writer's name here]?"

Yeah, chances are, most who still write for soaps but who aren't HW's are happy not to have to deal with the level of network interference that comes with being the HW.

So, in the end, I think it's either Ron or its Chat GPT, lol.

The most exciting thing that's happened to Y&R in years!

The rest will (almost undoubtedly) be a mess, but I'll be watching.

Clearly, JG was inspired by Dumas' "The Count of Monte Cristo" when he wrote that storyline, so why didn't he acknowledge that inspiration and have Cane use the alias "Edmond Dantès" instead?

Sweetie.. these are soap operas.. not Hallmark Channel movies or tv shows.

Death is a part of life and we all whine and complain about soaps being unrealistic. At the same time, there does need to be a balance so if one is going to write a terminal illness.. balance it out with a story that's warm and comical as a sort of palette cleanser.

And on a unrelated note, I really wish some posters would learn how to post links properly without copying and pasting useless info to go along with it.

Something else that I thought of was about Daytime Emmy nominations. The nominations will be out in a few weeks and maybe there is buzz about Y&R not doing so well with nominations or at least underperforming compared to previous years. Of course these things are kept airtight because of how secure the process is, but you still may get academy members talking when they shouldn't be.

The nominations were very skimpy last year with just three shows nominated. A three show race of B&B, GH and DAYS or BTG (not sure how good DAYS was last year) for outstanding drama series would be embarrassing for Y&R and more than enough to send the head writer packing.

I have to disagree with you there, there's a place on daytime to tell really any type of story and it's a medium that feels almost ideally suited to cover the slow deterioration caused by Alzheimer's. I think the real problem is when they seemingly become the only major storyline happening, as I felt with Mike and Dina. The shows had their leads in these achingly depressing stories where all it felt like anyone was doing was watch old people die. It's a really hard story to tell I'll give you that. There's no sort of "beautifully dying" element to it like a heroine dying of cancer as her love interest cries manly tears while her rival curses the gods in the hospital chapel.

Yes Dina needed a few years of being the grand lady in town- savvy business woman, no nonsense dispenser of advice etc Marla could have definitely pulled that off. Then you move into the Alzheimers-made all the more poignant by what we've seen before.

Can we forgive Sally for wasting Scott Grainger? Terrible casting and dull story/romances.

Another of Josh's WTF moments. Bringing back Fen for one episode as gay and with a partner.

Adam has been completely blanded out-maybe he needs to go darker if he's going to stay on.

I like the idea of Nick and Sharon re-uniting and refurbishing CL as a new beginning.

I have a very hard time watching Alzheimer's storylines, but I think, ideally, soaps are the perfect place to tell them as we have seen characters day after day for years. Unfortunately, most soaps aren't up to the job (the two times I think a soap really got it right were British soaps). At least the Dina story was not an atrocity like what happened with Beth Logan on B&B, which Bradley Bell should feel shame for.

These all make sense, although I think the ship sailed for Sharon and Nick years ago.

It's also worth mentioning: The Bold and the Beautiful did not even get nominated for Outstanding Daytime Drama in 2025, so it very well could be that Y&R suffers the same fate this year. Three is the minimum and six is the maximum.

I do agree that you need a separate, lighter story in order to balance out the pain that comes from watching the first story...but I also believe that you're there to give viewers hope. What hope is there in watching a loved one disintegrate mentally and physically before your eyes - and not in just a few weeks, mind you, but over days and weeks and months and even YEARS - leaving you with someone who is confused, unrecognizable and in constant pain? That it all will be over soon for them? That, if God's willing and the creek don't rise, it won't happen to YOU someday?

I want my stories always to reflect the times we live in, but not if it means putting viewers at risk of eating their guns.

Oh, and one more thing: don't call me "Sweetie."

Which storyline are YOU referring to, and where is the YT link so I can watch the crap out of it, lol?

I wish there was a way to undo that. I really do. You don't bring back a previous character as "insta-gay," just because the actor just wrapped up playing a gay character on another show. That's Ron Carlivati-level stupidity right there.

My suggestion: kill off Chelsea...and make coked-up Nick (who has "graduated" to harder drugs) responsible.

I'm not a fan of Alzheimer's stories, either.

We all know death is a part of life. Almost all of us have experienced Alzheimer's in our families. We do not need to see it play out on a soap we watch every day.

Giving Dina dementia gave her good material, but she would have been good with any material they gave her. The fact is that they shortened her stay on the show when she was fascinating in every scene she played.

That writing was for Emmy nominations and not for the audience. I think it was all an unforced error.

All they'd have to do is say he has realized he was bi. I know some would say that's homophobic, caving to pressure, erasure, but it does happen sometimes, especially with more fluid younger generations...and it's not as if they are dumping tons of history with the character.
