I’ve only just seen this, and my contribution will be limited because I no longer watch the show. Still, from what I’ve read, I agree that the show probably needs a new creative voice.

If I decide to try the show again depends on who is hired.

If I were to throw a name out, I’d say I think Natalie Minardi Slater will likely move over from BTG.

Normally, I would say "no." But we are living in desperate times.

Given that he had recent interviews published where he seemed pleased, is it possible that someone used AI to quit on his behalf, and because he's been kidnapped (likely by a therapist, possibly at someone's behest) he simply can't respond to refute the story and take back his show? Perhaps we should be concerned, not celebratory. But, obviously not concerned enough to actually do anything other than talk about it.

More seriously, someone in this conversation mentioned he wrote a rape at the Horton house on Days. I didn't remember that so I googled it, found a thread on this board almost the same as this, from ten years ago, celebrating his departure from that show. That suggests to me they maybe need to try someone fresh. It's a brand name show with a stable audience, why not use it to test a new person?

It's not easy work, but I refuse to believe there are only like seven humans in the United States capable of this job. And that they're all old enough to be living in the past, knowingly or not.

@BetterForgotten You manifested getting JG out! But more importantly, you and everyone else have rightly named the show's systematic issues. There is no succession plan --- not behind the scenes or with the characters. It's beyond belief that Victor, Nikki, Jack, and Phyllis are the leads on The Young & The Restless. Audra, Sally, Lily, Nate, Noah, Abby, Kyle, Adam, and Devon should be at the forefront, but each is either a bore or not being used properly.

There are no 35-40-year-old writers being given the chance to right this ship, and at this point, it's by design. The gatekeepers have a padded lock on these opportunities.

I believe JFP is still the booth producer (though uncredited). Tamara Braun mentioned meeting her when she joined the show as they had worked together at GH when she was Carly.

Y&R has too producers actually - Sally really needs to trim that producing staff. Griffith had so many producers on staff because he wasn’t actually doing much of the day to day producing.

Thanks. I never knew that. I wonder if he had any ideas that got onscreen. Little was great at Corrie but not quite elsewhere.

McDonald was brought in to help with the day-to-day from Griffith. That was her role. Him stepping down was in name only. By that point, McDonald was operating the day-to-day operations so Griffith could "focus" on the writing. Some good it did.

I hadn't heard that, but it's interesting, now that I look at the HW/EP timeline and compare that with various interviews.

Young was supervising producer under JFP and Pratt.
Then Young/Sussman became co-EPs while Sussman was HW.
Then Sussman exited and Young became HW and sole EP.

Sussman said in her exit interview that she created Teriah (their first kiss aired just before she was fired). Mal Young used to boast that he was responsible for the first lesbian kiss on a UK show, and I think he even had that boast on his twitter profile at one time. (It was on the show Brookside that Young produced). But Sussman wrote Teriah, and from what she said, it was her idea. Maybe Young ran with it, but it was her idea.

Sussman mentioned in her exit interview that her writing of Dina was an Alzheimer's story (although the diagnosis was not mentioned during episodes credited to Sussman as HW). (I wonder if perhaps she was writing the gradual decline and erratic behavior that families don't recognize for what it is, and things can progress for a while -- before the family finally brings their loved one to the doctor much later on.) When Mal took over as HW, he immediately began to emphasize Dina's Alzheimer's illness and did interviews about it, and the Alzheimer's Association certainly thought it was all his idea. Mal said it was important to him because it happened to his mother in real life.

I could not agree more. Writers are out there. Because we haven't seen their names in soap opera credits does not mean capable writers don't exist.

I am so damn tired of seeing the same 70-year olds named as possible replacements.

The very early years of JG and MAB were actually decent and not boring. Y&R hasn't had a long-term story in YEARS!!! JG wrote disjointed arcs and brought back characters/villians that amounted to nothing.

His departure is definitely celebrated. Hopefully, he leaves the industry all together. He needs to reevaluate because this last tenure was beyond abysmal.
