From the old school...I am down for 1 (Alden) and 2 (Sussman) who I know I was in the minority in her brief run. This time I would hope she would be ready if it is true she came in with no time to prepare a proper bible.

3...though I liked her run right up until the 'everyone in town at the trashbins' scene, no to her. And HADES NO to 4.

As for the newguards...I wouldn't be against 1 (Whitesell) and I wouldn't mind (2) Janice either since she is a lifer. However, this makes me think of our discussion on the BTG board about writers who are great at one thing, but might not be ready for HW duties. (MY note...not that they have truly been given a true try in that seat).

3 (Carlivati) is totally going to be polarizing. Just seeing his name makes people twitch.

4 I loathe CVE (though I give him credit where it's due...emphasis on WHERE). As for Dan, I always said that the reason he and CVE worked well before the strike was because he pulled CVE back from the ledge and he was the one with the writing talent. So to paraphrase the dearly departed Anthony Stewart Head...I would love to test that theory.

I agree, especially when the results not only make no sense, but are also horrible.

So many of the garden variety of hacks are either long retired or dead - so the succession question is real. Who the hell is left to that can fit into the grind and budget constraint of daytime?

Sheri Anderson?

I have never found Sheri Anderson that great of a writer, personally. She was good for a moment in time at DAYS in the 80’s, but other than that? Meh.

I wonder if Pamela K. Long would ever return to daytime under the right circumstances? I’m not a fan of everything she did at GL, but I liked her second stint there a lot more (when Nancy Curlee, who would be a dream but is never returning to daytime, was her Co-HW). I think she had a lot of innate talent, a knack for creating interesting new characters, and she knew how to tell compelling stories with younger characters. I think those are some of the things (among other things as well) that Y&R needs badly.

Ancient pros are not the answer. I'll just rehash what I told a couple friends earlier.

You are not going to replicate the Bill Bell house style, language or tone and make the clock roll back onscreen. And most of his proteges are now senior citizens, unable to safeguard the future. A lot of the remaining audience stands by the show in its decrepit state for its vets, #1 with a bullet still being ol' Victor, and their memories of old times.

You can't unmake the show into what it once was. Too much has changed. And you can neither broom out all the old folks who keep the show afloat nor totally reboot. But you can find someone out there (preferably someone under 50-60, preferably Black, who did grow up watching the show) with a bold new vision and voice to be HW, maybe backstopped by one of the proteges like Alden or Slater or whoever, and try to build from there. It's time to stop tinkering around the edges and do something big.

New blood would have to be less expensive than the longtimers like Carlivati, Pratt, etc. It's doable. They just don't seem to have any will to try at Sony or CBS, which is a shame.

I think they should try a few longtime Y&R scriptwriters. That may not be what improves the show but maybe they can stabilize. They won't take a risk on anyone new so it's probably going to be an old daytime name or somebody who can't get hired in primetime anymore but has ties to Sony.

The biggest issue as has been mentioned is that nothing is likely to change, even if a poor headwriter leaves, as shown at DAYS. So I get what people are saying in hoping for at least the bare minimum, like an end to the repulsive and worthless Matt storyline (sorry to Roger Howarth fans - maybe you can get him on B&B).

Whoever it will be...I definitely would like to see them mentored/consulted by Alden...something like Guza helping MVJ set up BTG for a year so she could get used to the art of HW-ing. Heck, perhaps even Slater coming back to be HW?

Indeed. And I'm sure they will for sure put the YOUNG back in the YOUNG AND THE RESTLESS while still keeping the old vets around to balance it out as it should be.

Gods no. B&B is enjoying itself as fluff soap and does not need him.

I was trying to come up with another soap and didn't think it would be fair to BtG...maybe DAYS then.

I have never been a Howarth fan but if he was not playing a rapist he'd be adequate enough.

Y&R hasn’t written one cohesive story in like 20 years (if not more). You can never go back to the Bell style, that’s long gone. All we can hope for is someone that actually knows how to formulate a compelling long story with decent characterizations attached. Nothing more or nothing less, but even that is too much to ask for in the current daytime climate.

I just pray FV at GH doesn't leap at the chance to get ABC to greenlight Roger #4.

Oh, lord, I didn't even think of that shivers

Ally!

It's kind of insane that our options are the retired and elderly or someone brand new. These soaps haven't invested in anyone over the past 20 years?

If they can go a single episode without characters sitting in a restaurant discussing their new job/potential job I'd consider it a win!

At all.
