Watched today for the big returns and it was actually pretty entertaining.

Stafford really lit up in her scene with Shemar and he seemed to not be so heavy with her as well.

Holden being a surprise Winters was certainly not on my bingo card but I won’t complain about more Winters and I like Holden.

-- I don't care why Shemar and Vivica are there. This episode was better because of them and because we didn't get the AI or Matt Clark crap.

-- Was Shemar SWAT-like serious? Yeah. But wouldn't a guy with a really terrible disease be serious?

-- Nathan Owens must feel like he hit the lottery. Good for him.

-- Forgot to mention yesterday that I am so glad Devon is all hellfire about Mariah. That makes perfect sense to me.

Of course, the other problem with the story is that once the reveal happens Malcolm will head out of town and never be seen again.

Joining the missing parents club- see Joanna, Olivia, Doris, Lydia, Tara, Yolanda ...

I do wonder if Vivica would be up to more regular appearances so this could have more of a long term impact. I'll admit, I tuned in for their return and although predictable, it was good. Vivica in particular reminded me of the way she is in her "Wrong" movie series which translates well to a soap. Her delivery was very dramatic when teasing Holden about her announcement. I also thought she had great chemistry with Audra.

I'm kinda happy they are beefing-up the Winters family. But problem is -- they are all in the same generation. I think they need to add a couple of Winters elders, even if they must recast. Aunt Mimi could always return, preferably permanently. Or at least Malcom or Olivia permanently (even as recasts). If the entire on-screen Winters family is of the same generation, TPTB are losing a lot of storyline potential. Successful soap opera families are most often multi-generational.

If Olivia came back, it'd likely be a recast.

I'd be OK with some Olivia appearances - a good recast would be fine.

Malcolm recast was a different story. Shemar was a hard act to follow and casting Darius was a head scratcher.

I'd be totally okay with that, as long as it was a good recast. I feel the same way about Malcom.

The scenes at Crimson Lights-empty as usual, which distracts me, especially when they deliberately use wide shots to show this up.

But then when they returned to the scene there were a couple of extras. One had take out and departed.Huh? Why not sit that extra down at a table and add some atmosphere? Strange...

Later on, it was back to being empty. Somehow CL misses out on extras.

They set up an area near the entrance of GCAC for Malcolm and Lily to chat. Always nice to have a different area on a set.

The Malcolm story is moving along quickly thanks to Shemar's limited availability but Y&R w/o all the current stories has already improved ten fold.

Lessons to be learned.
