As Salem bids farewell to John Black on Monday, the "Days" family and fans say a final goodbye to Drake Hogestyn.

From his time as a young man playing baseball in the minor leagues for the New York Yankees to his almost four-decade run as John Black, Drake always did his best. And, while becoming a soap opera icon, he spent almost 40 years at "Days" telling the best stories and taking the younger cast under his wing to make sure they would do their best as well. Thank you, Drake, for the legacy you have left for everyone at "Days." The impact you made on the cast, crew and fans will never be forgotten...and that's a fact.

RIP to our hero, John Black

I really wonder why they chose to write this whole ‘John is getting better’ part of the storyline, especially since we all knew what was really going to happen. And I hope we find out the answer someday.

But as tough and as tearjerking as today was, it was also really beautiful. And the acting, even though a lot of it if not all of it was real, was spectacular. The flashbacks were beautiful too. I honestly can’t even describe how much I enjoyed today.

Having so many of John and Marlena’s scenes be focused on the two of them and their love story was the right decision. It was a fitting end to John and Marlena. And I’m also glad that John and Steve got to have one last goodbye after everything that happened.

As for Bo and Hope and their family, I did think that some parts were a little unnecessary but I really enjoyed Bo’s dream and his reunion with Zack. The acting playing Zack actually did a pretty good job too. Everybody encouraging Bo to fight was really the right decision in this storyline as well.

As for the final minutes of today, be prepared. I actually have tears running down my cheeks as I write this.

On May 27, Johnny spoke to Sami on the phone, and learned that Sami and Sydney were trying to fly in from Sicily, but were stopped by a volcanic eruption because the ash had grounded all the planes.

As discussed on the May thread, ash from Mt. Etna in Sicily caused planes to be grounded in summer 2024, so Cwikly/Ford would have known that.  (I just learned that Mt. Etna has been considered "active" with intermittent activity since 2022, including February, April, and May 2025.)

Friday May 30, Will said that Sami and Sydney found another flight and will be here soon.

Well, Sami and Sydney got out just in time, because …

There was (and still is ongoing) a huge eruption of Mt. Etna that began very early Monday morning June 2 Italy time (which would be Sunday night June 1st Chicago time) and a volcanic ash plume had reached an altitude of around 6,400 metres (around 3 or 4 miles high)

I seriously got chills over today's episode, and I haven't stopped thinking about it. Fancy face

The only humor I found was the ongoing snipping between Hope and Ciara.  After the heck that Hope put Julie through as an adolescent, it seems like justice has been served that there is rarely a moment of peace between this mother and daughter.

I take back everything I thought about faux-John in the bed.  Marlena needed someone in the room today for that to work.  It would have been odd if she was alone in her bedroom, or he was dead in the bed next to her.  It is a powerful thing to say that her life didn't really begin until she found John.  We know she loved Don and Roman, but this was special and unique.

I always wonder how writers choose a name for a character.  Here's Marlena:

No wonder her sister Samantha went insane, she knew Marlena was the one her parents wished for.

To distract from the story,

  • I started wondering how often Hope and Marlena were on the show at the same time.?
    • I know they shared stories, but it seems like Hope ascended during Marlena's absence, and Marlena re-appeared while Hope was not in Salem.
  • I also wondered how many more episodes Marlena appeared with John, than Don or Roman?
    • Her on-screen marriage to Roman was relatively short.  But, there were a lot of breaks from the show during her marriage to John.  And she and Don were together for at least a few years.

I haven't said much about last week and today because I'm just enjoying it that much and soaking it all in. Building up the characters hopes before they pull the rug out from under them doesn't bother me. I think it helps to balance out the wave of devastation of this huge loss they'll be experiencing. I also want to give kudos to how well they are pacing every individual character's turn to have their moment and shine a light on their relationship with John. Never once has it felt forced or oversaturated.

Carrie was a sight for sore eyes. How I wish things turned out differently and she was a permanent Salem resident. Even if the whole episode was just her meeting everyone, I would have been glued to the screen.

I've never been the biggest fan of Brady, but his reminiscing with John surprisingly choked me up more than I thought it would or even could. Maybe because through the years John also kept the memory of Isabella alive for me, too? Still, so many strong moments, another being Abe hoping to be there standing proudly with John if Theo and Claire ever got married. I pictured it so vividly. That strong a point of view from Abe is so rare, too.

Like someone mentioned above, Roman should absolutely get that moment of thanking John for loving his children, but I bet they're saving that for the funeral. Same with Hope, who has shared such strong ties to him throughout the years. Would it be insensitive if Kate got a moment, too? I could sense a moment like in All My Children when Dixie died and Brooke went to Jamie and acknowledged that she recognized that he was hurting and loved Dixie, too.

Sami missing saying goodbye to John, while all his other children got a moment with him, is actually perfect for her character. How she reacts to that fact, if she's returning, will be a real testament to whether she's truly changed and evolved for the better.

Always happy to see Eric/Greg Vaughan, the constantly beautiful man he is.

It was so interesting how they positioned Johnny with the rest of the group. It made him so relatable to me, because looking outside in at all of them together who have spent so much more time with each other, with John, and especially with the audience, it absolutely would be intimidating and would just add to him feeling like he didn't belong. All these strong character choices are much welcome. Even the small part of Eric needing to pray helps see the characters as individuals. Having only kept a surface level attention on the show during the RC years, seeing Will and Eric connecting with Johnny was new to me. I even forgot Will and Johnny were brothers for a moment. Eric sounded like such an uncle when he told Johnny he didn't give him a chance to say a proper hello. With that scene and the hint of trouble in paradise, I can't help but wonder if Eric could be back in Salem more regularly? (No spoilers please).

My only real negative is that Chandler Massey is so limiting. I care about Paul the way I should care about Will because of how much stronger the actor is. If ever Will was returning permanently, which I don't think is necessary at this point, I would have to recast.

Anyway, except for that horrible and too on the nose cheap song choice at the end, another wonderfully done episode today. All the Bo material has been just as strong. We have been absolutely spoiled with all these flashbacks with both men. Even if it's been done before, the Bo in purgatory scenes have been a treat just to see Bo again properly and not just lying in bed. I wonder if Drake Hogestyn could have filmed, if they would have crossed paths in their dream states?

I was surprised they didn't just have Scott Shilstone back as Zack, but this new guy was solid, but in no way looked like Bo and Hope's child. When Zack mentioned he was surrounded by loved ones, I was hoping for a line about him meeting Isabella. I did think it was funny that in today's hospital scenes with Bo, Hope and Ciara were dressed much more appropriately. As for Chelsea,  much as I like Rachel Melvin, I understand the choice to have Chelsea there, but not on-screen. I wonder if they even asked her to return or was this always the plan? Still, Bo is finally alive again after all! I was holding out for a hero, it's just so sad we had to lose the ultimate one in the process!

KA started in 1983 both KA and DH left in 1987.  KA appeared for a few months in 1990.  Deidre came back in 1991 and KA returned again in 1994.  Outside of Deidre's firing in 2009 and KA leaving they always were in one another's orbits.

Hope was more part of the young crowd in the 80's, but they still shared stories due to Bo/Roman.  I would say both characters had different periods of prominence, but overall it was very equal.

I would say even someone like Ali/Sami might have Roman and Don beat out as far as episodes appearing with Marlena, but that wasn't really the original question lol

    • It could have been interesting, given that she and Alex were friends. I imagine he would have ended up bringing out her Solita personality.  For all the talk of crazy fans, for a long time fans did seem willing to embrace the rivals of...well, Reva's rivals. (no wonder Kim felt insecure as it happened three times with her) You don't seem to get as much of the tribalism until the "Manny" era. I guess some might say "Matessa" too, but as I could not stand Dinah in those years, I am not one to talk about their fans if they managed to repeatedly put the kibosh on a Matt/Dinah pairing. And at least that did not seem to involve death threats.
    • 1976 Pt 4 Viki is stunned to learn from Dr. Jim Craig that her father may never speak or be mobile again. Dorian bravely assures her that she’ll devote her entire life to Victor and if anyone can help him recover, she can. Alone with Victor, Dorian tells him she knows he hears her and she was wrong—she lashed out at him from hurt. She insists that none of it is true, that Tony is lying to try to drive her away and be Victor’s heir. Dorian then accuses Tony of causing Victor’s stroke, saying he could have killed him. But learning that Victor made three phone calls after his visit convinces him that his father was fine after he left and Dorian’s fine hand is at the base of this. Dorian insists that Victor be released into her care as soon as possible; she'll set up all necessary facilities at Llanfair., When Dorian walks in while Viki is reading a letter from Tony to Victor, she interrupts the reading, claiming it’s upsetting Victor. Viki tells Tony, however, that Victor was fine listening to his letter and it was Dorian’s entrance that upset him greatly. Dorian is delighted when a Lord Enterprises attorney informs her she’s going to receive Victor’s power of attorney on a temporary basis. Tony is furious that no one is challenging this, but Viki explains that they can’t do anything, as the law is on Dorian’s side and a challenge would only be a public statement of lack of trust in Victor’s wife. Viki insists that Victor’s welfare is being safeguarded, but Tony points out that. none of the people who care for him are with him at Llanfair. Joe is with Victor when he seems to rally and speaks Joe’s and Dorian’s names. Over Joe’s observation that Victor wants to continue, Dorian quickly administers a sedative, insisting this effort is too taxing. The following day, Peter, at Llanfair to give Dorian some Free Clinic reports she’s requested, overhears Victor say, “Phone . . . get me Hanson” (one of his lawyers) and sees Dorian quickly sedate him again, saying he can’t have any visitors for fear of overexertion. The very next day Victor is taken back to the hospital by ambulance, in a coma. Told that Victor is conscious but near death, and calling for his daughter, Dorian, knowing that Viki and Joe are waiting in the courtyard, intentionally sends the nurse to look for them in Jim’s office, delaying their arrival until Victor is no longer able to talk. Viki sits with him for a few moments, then must leave, and shortly thereafter Jim tells her, Joe, and Tony that Victor has died. . Vinnie is horrified to learn his wife Wanda, is the “Lana-Sheen Lady,” a cosmetics saleswoman. He tells her she violated the trust of their marriage by intentionally concealing that she was working, something he had forbidden, insisting he must be the breadwinner in the family. But Wanda warns Vinnie that there is more to this than the money, that she needs to feel she’s accomplishing something with her life. Vinnie does think it through but questions the safety of going door to door. Wanda then springs Tony’s offer that  work for him at Tony’s Place, initially infuriating Vince, who claims Tony is a wolf. But a visit to the club shows Vince that Wanda does indeed have considerable talents for running a restaurant establishment, and he gives his approval. Despite Cathy’s continued insistence that they not marry but go on as before, Tony is willing to let her have things her way, and their relationship has resumed. Pat tries to reassure her son, who thinks Cathy is not very nice, by explaining that it’s difficult for Cathy to be with children, since she recently lost her own little girl. But the pain of facing Tony and Cathy’s relationship becomes too much for Pat and, needing to tell someone, she confides in Viki the true story of Brian’s parentage.  Viki tells Pat she must tell Tony the truth and she should fight for Tony if she still loves him and give her son his rightful father, especially since Tony and Brian were good friends from the moment they met. Cathy, however, is growing suspicious of the easy closeness between Pat and Tony and questions him about their old relationship. Tony insists that their relationship was a brief romance, too short to be earthshaking, and assures her that Pat didn’t rebound into Kendall’s arms they had known each other long before Rio. But Cathy is not satisfied, and pursues her inquiry in New York, where she finds that Pat didn’t marry Paul until after Brian’s birth. This confirms Cathy’s suspicions, and she decides she has to act now to keep Pat from taking Tony from her. Pat, meanwhile, has decided to tell Tony the truth and arranges a meeting with him. She is stunned when he walks in with Cathy and introduces her as Mrs. Tony Lord. Pat says nothing, and later has to tell her embittered son that he’s going to have to accept Cathy as Tony’s wife whether he likes it or not. Viki, learning of Tony’s marriage, rushes to console Pat, who castigatés herself for having wasted so much time on a man who doesn’t love her. She knows she'll have to tell Brian the truth someday, but is sure that if he learned the truth now he would feel deserted by Tony, just as he feels deserted by Paul. Tony and Cathy’s married life begins on an idyllic plane, with Cathy eagerly making plans for a child. Tony has read Cathy’s book and wonders if she’s not | dealt too severely with a central character who bears an unmistakeable resemblance to Viki. Cathy admits that this is true, and Pat, working with Cathy’s agent, has already suggested revisions. Pat finds Brian having nightmares, and the boy admits his uncertainty about his father’s death, as Paul’s body was never actually identified. Concerned, Tony spends time with the boy, upsetting Cathy, who sees him as a threat. Cathy’s agent mentions to Pat that Cathy interrogated him about the details of her marriage and her child, and Pat suddenly realizes Cathy knows. She confronts Cathy, accusing her of marrying Tony to hold on to him. Cathy tries to insist that she doesn’t know what Pat’s talking about, and counter accuses her of trying to break up her marriage. Pat then leaves, saying they’ll discuss it when Cathy’s ready.
    • Michelle Forbes really captivated GL viewers so it was smart of Long to take advantage of that. When I looked back at news items and letters to the editors, I found so many letters to the editors/columns upset she was not nominated for Best Actress the year before she was nominated for supporting actress.  I read somewhere that they had planned a major storyline with Sonni and Roger but that it never came to pass because Forbes wanted to leave the show. I wonder what they had in mind.

    • Haha, love to hear it, and thank you! Yeah, I just write down thoughts/notes as I'm watching in this viewing journal I'm keeping.  So, you get my raw, honest thoughts in the moment without me having to go back and remember or curate anything.

Watros is great, and I've liked her from the beginning, so I'm excited to see her evolve and shine even more as Annie continues to descend. I'll keep an eye out for that scene.  I have to say, Rick cracks me up, there are times when he makes jokes and you can tell the actor is having fun with it and cracking himself up. He's endearing. Let me suffer!    So funny how big Josh's hair is in the 80s. Sign of the times, I guess.   I can't wait to finally see the Sonni storyline and watch a younger Michelle Forbes shine. It's on my list, I will go back in time eventually and do this
    • This was late 1993, right before Roger is shot.
    • Haha I guess so, and in this recent case, Alan absolutely deserved it (many times over, honestly).
    • It's hard to remember, as Holly and Blake always seemed to be on the outs over something.
    • Ohhh yes, these were exciting!  What year was this?  Another added bonus, watching Tangie lurk around like a thief with that black beanie.

I'm happy to hear I'm not alone in my thoughts over Gilly's exit and Vivian's first and likely only contract storyline. It was just a shame. On one hand, I'm glad they decided to finally write for this family (as Gilly was sorely underused in 1995), but then on the other... that was what they decided? Sure, it was a bit soapy, but oh so gross. They could have come up with something better.
    • Women slapping guys is a little more common.  I grew up with CBS, so it doesn't seem strange to me. If you got a slap, you usually really deserved it.
