I'm pretty sure it is information that is routinely available most, if not all, locations. I believe it falls under the heading of public health.

I personally have a file in Notes on all of the soap actor suicides I am aware of. But, if it is a question of posting it, some people are interested in the information but others don't want to see it. Mostly it just exists in Notes for that reason.

Anyway, too danged young, and quite sadl

@Bright EyesThe government collects epidemiological data to determine the health needs of the citizens.

The ethical issue is whether the press should publish the data, even when they have access.

On the other hand, the leading cause of death for men under 40 are car accidents (40%), followed by suicide (11%).  So, it would be easy to guess the cause based on the probability and the place of death.  It is my belief that we should talk openly about suicide in order to help those in need.  Keeping secrets is never healthy.

I appreciate that you thought about it, instead of just jumping in thoughtlessly.

In such a manner of death, if one wishes to announce it, I feel it's best to put the crisis hotline info with it.
It used to be customary for news outlets to do that, but many don't bother these days. And when such deaths happen fictionally, there used to be a PSA at the end of the show, etc.

If someone is in crisis, they might not have the wherewithal to look up crisis lines, so that's why I always say to post the crisis line info with the death announcement. Just my thoughts.

In addition to the hotlines I posted on the first page of this thread, here are some more.

But shouldn't that be on the family to publish any details? The site I was on even had his exact time of death. It's just strange that anyone in the world can access this information. Wouldn't suicide even be enough anyway? There's no need for anyone to know what form, that's just ruthlessly macabre.

I saw it this morning and made the choice not to mention it either. Mental health conversations don't happen often enough. I was quite upset to read that because I remember the very joyful presence on screen, forgetting how often behind the facade can be so much more going on. I work with middle schoolers and the mental health crisis in this country has exploded since COVID. I hope some will find a way to channel their energy into working on generating conversation on the importance of mental health services.

It's not unusual for the trades to get ahold of this information, however tragic.

I prefer to preserve my ire for attention seekers who, for example, leak the private details of a dying hospice patient to social media before the family's statement and without their permission in order to get more views on Soap Twitter.

Thanks again for the synopsis as I know I enjoyed the that era too, at least from May 2009- at least February 2011 or so when the show gave us Faux Rafe/Arnold (funny he’s back now), the whole Taylor/Fay debacle, and Chloe the hooker with the inexplicable Vivian’s beloved but never mentioned son Quinn. Although Sonny’s introduction was definitely a highlight at the time.
I recall I was indifferent to Dario mainly because it seemed fruitless at the time especially on the heels of losing Ariana just as she finally became interesting as well as losing the original Gabi.

MarDar was a fatal blow to me because once EJ and Sami slept together again later on in 2011 I was so repulsed I tuned it out, regardless of Will’s reaction.

I had know idea and I'm so sorry to hear that happen to you and your family my friend!  I can't imagine having to deal with anything so devastating.

Sigh....I just don't know what else to think, other then it's a shame not more is ever done to ensure nothing like this happens, but most of the time, it's out of our hands it seems...

Thank you! Even though next month will be the 23rd anniversary of that occurring, it still stings when I see something like this occur.

Unfortunately it’s still a massive taboo. Seems for almost everyone I know who passed in their 30’s, bearing car accidents and at least one victim of COVID, I always seem to discover that suicide or drug use was involved which is unfortunate.

The recent daytime Star losses of Anne Heche, Tyler Christopher and Bill Miller compound this of stars in trouble and not getting adequate help.

RIP - his stint on B&B was truly memorable because the plot was first and foremost hilarious. Quinn's line that "Mateo, uh, you are a godsend!" plus the Brenda Dickson style pronounciation of "mahsahhhhhhhge" are a classic. Stuck between Sheila and Quinn - Mateo was a fun character.

    • I really have no problem with Kai as a character or with the actor. The problem is putting together two very nice people -- Kai and Trina. Neither of them has a bad side, neither of them has a devil on the shoulder, neither of them is impulsive. I think that's a problem in a soap relationship. Yeah, I agree. All this freaking out might make sense if Lulu wanted to do a tabloid expose on BLQ's LOVE CHILD. We have no indication that's the case.
    • So Sonni would have somebody to talk to who she wasn't conspiring with (Will or Alan)? Alex kept telling Sonni how important her friends were...when she had virtually no friends. Instead they created loyal servants like Jane and Vera to give Alex people to play off of. They did that with Iris on AW, but Vivien was mostly there for comic relief Alex keeping Marah's paternity a secret was absurd. But I still love the scene between Alex and Alan where he convinces her by reminding her how they protected each other from their abusive father. Chris and Bev ATE that scene. Unfortunately, that took place only a few months before he exited the show...always thought they could have built on that, explored more how being Brandon's children screwed them both up. Maybe even used it as an explanation for the way their relationship could constantly swing from hatred to love. Instead of it being merely dictated by the plot.
    • The first one is Cass Winthrop dressed as Krystle Lake on Another World (not from his original creation of the character to hide from the loan shark Tony the Tuna, but at a romance convention trying to find out what had happened to Felicia who was missing). The second one is also Another World, Jake McKinnon as Doris although I don't recall what his purpose was.
    • I know there was one brief scene in the summer of 1989 where Lillian did mention Calla.. but in relation to her past relationship to Ross and it was to Roger while he was a patient at Cedars.  I think he was trying to pump her for information on Ross.. and for some reason, Calla's name came up.   I could see perhaps Beth mentioning that her mother Lillian was visiting Calla.. but not exactly giving any sort of details as to the going ons in Calla's life off screen.

    • They're neither great nor terrible AFAIK, but it is more a question of the streaming numbers in this day and age vs. actual TV airings. The Chibnall era reminded me much more of the crisis years, but I do think it's a very real possibility now as well due to the streaming bubble collapse affecting the show and its prospects.
    • ANYTHING to get her off the screen..she COULD have been interesting if she and Van had a few face offs..(there was a mild one of her going back to work...but I wanted something meatier "Bitch, I am Vanessa Chamberlain and I don't take advice from someone who followed the..career path you did!" I did like Alex's outright disdain for her.
    • Thanks @Vee for the commentary.    I haven’t even watched this season yet after  I couldn’t get past the couple episodes last season…like it was too Disneyified for my taste, although I did think it was a least better than the Chibnall era (but so is a lot of things). I’ll probably go back and binge it now. Hoping this season ends on a high note. I did read the ratings are terrible. As it stands I’m beginning to feel like what long time DW fans felt with S26 in 1989.
    • Yes, they are all on contract. Next.
