Yes.  Sure, it would be a nice sentiment, but where do you draw the line?  Do we need a PSA on cobalt poisoning and bad hip replacements?  This is a show that thinks gun violence is the correct action to take when someone is a mild inconvenience to you.

This isn't a groundbreaking story like Robin/Stone's AIDS story.  This is just a run of the mill medical drama used on soaps all the time.  I just don't think it's that serious.  It's not like Days where Rolf is just keeping dead people alive without hearts with secret serums he creates.

GH stopped being socially relevant and aware years ago.

I don't think that Liasion stans are representative of the fan view, but I think the fans of JJ Lucky will be limited in present day because they are, for the most part, just not tied to what GH has been over the last 20 years. That show is never coming back, and neither is the family unit that made him so loved.

They might be able to readjust, or at the very least have better material for him than he got when he was on in 2011, but I don't think today's GH cares about telling stories with him that could help make more current viewers feel invested. I think Frank only brought him back because he had no choice.

Truly, I only draw the line on misinformation.  Soaps have used fictional illness to get around stuff for years.  But they shouldn't mislead people.

I'm fine with actresses looking fully made up and gorgeous, while dying of some mystery disease.  Nobody ever having to pay their hospital bills (except for Lucky, that one time).  Surgery being done by a relative.  And everyone getting a single room.

But, soaps should adhere to some ethical principles, and not to spread lies about real medical issues.

Except I don't think GH (unfortunately) has that much of a new generation of fans over the last 10 years, let alone the last 20. And Jonathan was just as popular the last time he was back on contract. So I don't see a reason not to utilize a strong core actor. YMMV. My issue is far more with the creative output of the show itself.

That's true (the closest they came was trying to get new people in for pairings like Sprina and we see how happy Frank and co were about that). I suppose what I meant was I think most of the viewers who watched for whatever the show is half-heartedly trying to go back to left a long time ago.

Was there any boost when he came back in 2010? I think most of the people who were interested probably had their fill around that point, although maybe some of those viewers who quit since his last return might have come back.

You're right they should have done a better job, but they didn't with Jason, and I am not sure of the last time they did with a return.

I don't think there was a big bump when JJ returned in 2010, but they certainly didn't promote it the way they did Vanessa's return either.  Plus Lucky was already on canvas in the shape of Greg Vaughn. I believe there was a much larger bump for Brenda's initial return.  It ended up leveling off because, much like Lucky's current return, Brenda was stuck in Rome so long and the show was a mess.

I think the last time there was an effort made for a return was Steve/Jason's in 2017, but it was nowhere near the level they promoted Brenda/James Franco/50th anniversary.  But budget changes happened and Soapnet doesn't exist.   I know Soapnet is considered an overall failure, but those commercials and marathons probably did bring some eyeballs to viewers of other soaps that were either lapsed viewers or mildly intrigued.

    • Maeve makes a few sporadic appearances, but returns full-time the next spring/summer. She's back in time to see Bill and Michelle graduate, although she skulks around town and wasn't going to tell anyone she was alive.
    • Aww, yeah it's very heartbreaking and I mostly enjoyed the Nola/Vanessa scenes because they finally let their walls down and came together in a beautiful moment. So Nola was at the hospital already and bumped into Vanessa, who had MRI papers that fell out of her hand and Nola went down to pick them up and asked her what was going on. Later, Vanessa confided in her about her disease. Then, Nola told Zachary on the beach (he prodded her and already alluded to knowing something was going on with Van), and then Vanessa found out she told him and got a little upset. Now, however, Nola is strangely absent while everyone is mourning her death. I'm curious if Nola will actually tell people about her MRI results. I would assume so. Only Nola, Rick, Roger and Zachary know anything, although there is the MRI results letter from the mail that everyone has missed seeing at home. I'm sure it'll all come out at some point. But... I just saw the next episode and the opening already cut Vanessa out and added Dahlia and Zachary. I guess Maeve is gone for a long time

That will break my heart seeing the town continue to mourn her and assume she's dead. I can't wait to see her return though, and I have to imagine feelings will be torn between loving that she's alive and being very angry she did all of this. While I hate what Vanessa is doing, I'm happy to hear it's not totally against her character. I think you're right, had Henry still been around, she wouldn't put him through this. I'm still surprised she is with Bill, though. I get her feelings on Matt, because she wants him to move on, but still very heartbreaking. I'm glad this was Maeve's choice to have a break vs. being fired.    Interesting, so I'm curious to see who they eventually pair Phillip with. They're flirting with a Phillip/Annie pairing, but I'm not sure if they'll go that route with the Jeva drama, her growing pill addiction, and Rick's past with her.  Ugh, yeah I'm so sad to see Bridget do a total 180 in the last couple weeks. She has always been a strong character from what I've seen, but now she's just bending over backwards to get Hart to love her and it reeks of desperation. Yeah, sure, this new Hart is eye candy, but I'm already tired of seeing Hart/Dinah have sex all over Springfield and the Cayman Islands haha.
    • Yes.  I remember them together during the early summer of 1986.  They didn't share scenes again for 30 years until 2017 because Carrie wasn't on the show when Anna returned during Sydney's kidnapping.
    • I can see Kim being that way. Well, Kyle didn't have to say yes. LOL. The suicide attempt feels plot-driven. I don't know if even Long could've made it work. She'd spent so much time trying to make Reva and Kyle into a couple, it feels odd to just have them give up. Not to mention how odd it is to have Maeve agree to marry him. Re Charita---surely they could've at least tried  finding clips with who was still there. Maybe they wouldn't have been "big" moments, but surely she'd interacted with Ross, Vanessa, and Henry. Vanessa had dated Ed, FCOL. But Mo and Rick were there---surely they could've bothered to find some clips of her with them (and they did interact a fair amount) and used them. And with Ed they could've found some shot of her talking to him and just not cut to whoever was playing Ed in the clip. That to me is what feels lazy---they had more than a year to figure it out, and they went with a bunch of photos. If you were sort of centering it on Rick anyway---then find clips with them and use 'em.
    • I definitely think it's time to write off Nina for good. I think her killing Drew might actually be a good idea. She could completely lose it after losing both Sasha and Willow and she ends up murdering Drew and eventually she gets caught and sent away to prison for a long time.
    • I hope it's okay to post this here(as in from DC)
    • Quick question - did Christie and Leann share any scenes together in the '80s before Leann left the show?
    • This is the perfect way to encapsulate the situation. So many morally-reprehensible stories were foisted on the show and its characters in ATWT's dwindling years. Rape should never be used as a cheap plot device or in a way that degrades the victim. Jack's sexual assault was another heinous example of how nasty the the show's tone had become. The fact that people like Hogan Sheffer, Ron Carlivati, Jean Passanante, Charles Pratt, Dena Higley, etc., somehow end up winning awards for their material, decimates the credibility and integrity of the awards, IMHO. Soaps used to have a solid moral core and did not originally wallow in the gutter, rolling around in filth and depravity just to be cool, hip, campy, or whatever else modern-day PTB aim for. Thank you. Cruelty, degradation and misogyny are not components which lend themselves to successful soaps, which have always been predicated on warmth, family bonds, and providing a comforting haven for their audience. The genre has been crippled because the cynical and ignorant executives in charge understand neither the shows nor what the audience wants to see.
