Didn't JT leave around that time? Or significantly reduced his appearances for his primetime show? That could be the reason. I feel like I read years ago they were always interested in recasting Roman, but could never find the right actor until they cast Drake and the show wasn't even sure then and only decided after they saw Dee/Drake's chemistry.
They did a lot of chem testing in the 80's which I enjoyed. Even in 1979/1980 I felt like Marlena was being tested with half the men in the cast (Josh Fallon especially) and Don was still hanging out in the wings just in case.
I think the Days had more time and budget to explore friendships, possible relationships, rivals, etc. While now they have 3 minutes to complete an episode that will air in 2029 lol.
