New Details Announced (TL; DR) - September 19, 2024:

  • "The Gates" is now called "Beyond The Gates."
  • Key Art/Logo for "Beyond The Gates" released.
  • Soap alums Tamara Tunie ("As The World Turns"), Daphnee Duplaix ("One Life to Live," "Passions") and Karla Mosley are the first actors officially cast by the show.
  • "Beyond The Gates" is a one-hour daytime drama.
  • The series is set to premiere in early 2025. Previously, CBS announced it would debut in January 2025.
  • CBS has formally announced the series will begin production later this fall in Atlanta; confirming the film location (city), but not studio.

  • Anna Saalfeld is also a new addition to the executive producer team, having never been previously announced. This makes it eight executive producers behind "Beyond The Gates," the most for a daytime drama series ever.

Note: "BTG" will be the official acronym used for "Beyond The Gates" on the SON Community. Posts/threads created should always start with "BTG:" going forward.

For reference, the current soap acronyms are "B&B" (The Bold and the Beautiful), "DAYS" (Days of our Lives"), "GH" (General Hospital") and "Y&R" (The Young and the Restless). "ALL" is for all shows, while "AMC" is for All My Children.

Also, #BeyondTheGates is the official hashtag to be used on social media, per CBS.

Facebook and Instagram pages have been created, but are not active. Will share the link when they are officially available.

Also, they absolutely can’t afford to have the “black culture” in this show be whitewashed like it is on the 4 existing soaps. A show like this shouldn’t shy away from what it means to be black in America in 2024, and the socioeconomic complexities within the black community itself. Otherwise, what’s the use of having a platform like this if you can’t be real?

ICAM.

When (hopefully when, not if) this finally begins production, I expect CBS will mandate that Y&R step their p*ssy up and reach out to lapsed viewers, particularly their black audience, in preparation for a stronger daytime line-up. Perhaps a story arc involving the return of Shemar Moore. Maybe they'll finally remember Tonya Lee Williams. And if Victoria Rowell isn't wisely scooped up for The Gates, a back-from-the-dead Drucilla would be heavenly.

That won't be happening, LOL.

Victoria Rowell is on good terms with CBS and she appeared at the Y&R 50th anniversary party in March 2023, with her photos taken in front of a CBS logo backdrop, and posted the pics on her IG.

I don't know if she's worked things out with SteveKent/Sony or not, though.

One of the things VR wanted most was Black people in production/management/writing.  Griffith fired a lot of staff, so that has gone backwards.  I don't know how she'd feel about Y&R now.

I could see her doing Gates, but of course I want Drucilla.  I don't know what to think!  I just want to watch VR in whatever productions she feels good about.

Unfortunately, I'm not holding my breath of ever seeing VR on CBS Daytime again - it's been almost 17 years since she was last on the show. She's probably never coming back to daytime in general (whether by choice or not). No other soap has even tried to get her.

Who I could see? Maybe Vivica A Fox's washed-up behind making a return. MVJ did write that infamous Generations catfight (about the only memorable thing that show had going for it).  What's she noticeably doing beyond plugging CarShield these days?

She also produces and co-stars in those "Wrong" movies that Lifetime Movie Network (LMN) airs frequently.

I can see VR doing The Gates. I don't think she will ever be back at Y&R/Sony given the long-standing status quo, which is a real shame. But yes, as others have said, if they want a good lead-in for the show and are reinvesting in soap opera then they'll still need to flip Y&R in a big way, and that means finally, truly materially embracing the Black audience they have shunned or fobbed off with lip service for almost 20 years. If it was me and Dru is off the table (and you can't at least have her do a ghost/vision appearance for the kids) it would start with just bringing back Mishael Morgan's Hillary. That's the closest to Dru you're gonna get without all the BTS drama that keeps Dru gone.

Vivica A. Fox was in the BET+ movie "Sworn Justice" playing Mishael Morgan's mother, released before Christmas 2023.

This is the promo for it:

I halfway expected that promo to end with Vivica saying, "Girl, looks like you met The Wrong Santa Claus."

My mom posted this news on my Facebook timeline an hour ago and I thought it was a joke or something so I came here to find out if it was real. Obviously this is wonderful news for soaps. The past decade has shown that Black audiences can brings numbers to sustain programming in primetime and I think CBS is banking on that.
