It’s crazy how surreal it’s becoming that I’m actually going to be around to see a soap operas premiere! I mean I was alive when Passions debuted, but to actually be there for the very beginning to me is crazy!

Agreed.

Even though I did see the first couple of episodes of Sunset Beach (missed first two episodes), Port Charles and Passions, this is the first time I get to watch a brand new soap as an adult. The previous occasions, I couldn't tune in daily due to being in middle/high school so I wasn't as aware of everything going on early on. I only really kept up with Passions in its latter years due to SON.

I only started watching Passions daily after it's second year, even though I saw a handful of episodes beforehand. It will definitely be nice though, going into a new soap with a more "adult" perspective, if that makes sense? LOL

I'm also still trying to visualize how a brand new soap opera will even look in 2025. Like will it look modern, old fashioned, or  will they kind of use more of a modern UK approach to the production of the show?

Here's hoping for a sneak preview soon of what we will actually be looking at!

Oooh that’s actually something I hadn’t even thought about. I’d go with the modern UK approach but for whatever reason when US soaps have tried that it looks rather bad. Then again the last thing BTG should look like is how Y&R looked right before Ed Scott’s recent return lol.

And hopefully this will be better than Passions my friend! I still remember watching live and letting my jaw drop and saying WTF? in the 1st 10 minutes when the little Angel girl appeared right before the opening credits

Not that I'm not hoping for a lot of fresh ideas and content, but It will be fun to see if we all end up seeing nods to the other soaps during the first week! Particularly since it's airing on CBS if we see any early Y&R or B&B parallels that Michele might borrow?

Just put in to leave work early on February 24! The first new daytime soap to premiere in over 25 years, and the first one that I'm actually old enough to really understand, absolutely deserves me parked right in front of the TV on a Monday afternoon to watch it live. I'm very tempted to go watch it at my mom's house with a sandwich and Crystal Light lemonade, the way I watched soaps twenty years ago.

Given that this isn't being filmed in LA (Right?) That definitely gives it an opportunity to have a slightly better production then what we are seeing now on the soaps (Even though Y&R has slowly improved I agree) I admit though it will be weird if it does look more like a "primetime" show then a typical looking soap opera, if they do indeed go with the UK approach. I'm not saying I could get use to it, but right now it's just me visualizing watching this 5 days a week.

Haha, if we see no angels, Witches, Dolls, demons, and an outside carnival during it's first weeks on air I think we are in good shape for BTG!

Given that MVJ worked at B&B, I do hope down the line we do have a modern day version of Stephanie vs. Brooke, or Katherine vs Jill, or any story about a Poor young vixen daughter turning the town's older wealthy Bitchy Matriarch's life upside down! LOL

Beyond The Gates February 2025 Discussion Thread will go off!!!

I'm sure there's been much discussion on how the show will look-daytime soapy or a more primetime feel? Will one day take several days onscreen to unfold or will there be time jumps, even within an episode?  Will there be fake outside scenes or regular location work?

So much to ponder...

I would hope it's not multiple time jumps in an episode, giving it'll still be on five days a week. I don't want it to be old school Passions style with one year in our world amounting to only ten days in theirs, but we need our weddings and parties to last a few days.

Based on the teaser promo, it seems like it'll look like classic daytime soap, which I know there are people who would rather it not, but I figure...it's daytime. The people tuning in to a new daytime soap will expect it to look like a daytime soap. The people turned off by that probably aren't interested in tuning in to a new daytime soap.

    • The actor who plays Martin has been teasing that nobody has guessed Martin's secret. I love that for things like that and the June story we have no idea. I feel like if we didn't have the day ahead feeds Anita's reveal would've been shocking as well. I love that they aren't going the obvious route with these stories.
    • I tried following the news in Los Angeles at https://laist.com (independent public radio and news) They had up-to-the minute accurate info during the wildfires in January. There's no video, no impact to my mind as to what's happening. Trying other outlets, to get the truth, but it's hard.
    • That's a bit murky since that happened during a writers' strike. Assuming Kristen Marie had a 2-year contract she left about when her contract would have expired and Sharlene and Josie showed up right before that. Lemay was officially credited as HW from September 1988 but it seems very probable that his anticipated tenure influenced events that happened during the strike which started in April.
    • I've seen so many posters over the years who are bright, creative, well-versed in soap history, and who care deeply about the integrity of the genre. I'd put the shows' chances in their hands a lot faster than I would allow any of the "usual suspects" to take control of the dramas they've already helped decimate. When I returned to university in the 1980s, I created a bible for a new soap and presented it in my screenwriting class. It was in reaction to how badly I saw the network shows being butchered at the time. The creative process was thrilling; a total joy, and I still smile when I remember the positive feedback I received from the professor and my fellow students. I was used to seeing written commentary from professors on my work. This one wrote me a long, complimentary note on the final page of the bible, but also graded it 97%, A+. I was beaming ear to ear for days!

    • Thanks. I do wonder if Rose was meant to be more given the caliber of actress they hired. I remembered Sara and Peggy staying longer as they were still on when Soapnet started their repeats. I wonder if that was part of the reason they brought Jake's brother in.
    • Speculation about Missy Reeves' potential evolution on basic civil rights doesn’t change my opinion of her. My view is shaped entirely by her public social media presence—which I find unpalatable—and I have no interest in learning more beyond that. I simply liked Jennifer’s hair and dress. That’s as far as my admiration goes.

    • Cheryl was gone before Lemay came back but I agree with your thinking that he would rather a character from a family he introduced to the show than a family he did not originate.  I remember reading somewhere in the early 90's probably after DS left as writer, their was an either a writer or a producer who made a comment that their intent was bring the McKinnon family back to AW.  Would have made sense for the newer viewers from the 80's.  Much like Lemay's attempt to bring the Frames back from his writing in the 70's in his 1988 return
    • DePriest left in January 1988. According to the AWHP, Rose last appeared nearly a year before in February 1987 while both Sara and Peggy appeared as late as October 1987.
    • Annie was not brought in as an antagonist for Reva. Reva wasn’t even on the canvas when Annie first appeared in late 1994.
    • The speculation……….very entertaining.
