It is valid. I agree. My earlier response was not meant in any way to invalidate that.

My earlier reply was only meant to say that Black comes in all varieties and that at least in the case of Karla, she's as Black as me. I am far from "light skin." The light-skinned people I've seen heavily used on TV typically are those who are either mixed race or very similar. I expect with additional casting announcements, we'll even see some darker skin compared to the ladies, but overall, Black is still Black.

I didn’t see your response as a dismissal of those concerns at all. One of the things I appreciate most about this message board in particular is the fact that we can discuss these issues and I appreciate it being brought up. It is indeed early casting and I expect to see the spectrum of skin tones and shades represented. I also hope whoever is peeping our comments on this board will be reminded that we are mindful so they should also be mindful.

I admit, I didn’t pay much attention to the earlier character descriptions because I knew there would be some changes. I think of my own writing of characters and there are almost always changes.

Not to stir up anything but I do think @Darn’s concerns are valid. We do need a diversity of skin tones, hair textures, etc if this is going to be a good representation of even a family. Colorism is a real issue (even KSJ spoke in somewhat scathing terms of Y&R’s issues with colorism.

In addition to TT, I also said that I want TP and LL and LR because all are talented (TP is also a singing powerhouse), experienced in the daytime soap world and telegenic. We do need to see the skin tone spectrum represented and to avoid those mistakes borne of pathology that have been committed on soaps of the previous generations.

I agree with Darn's concerns to a degree also. Lots of dark skinned mega talent out there. Can we please see it more? Casting is certainly not complete with BTG, so hopefully some dark chocolate brothas and sistas will still be cast.

As "Sara" (now Dani) has two daughters: "Cheryl" and "Jillian". Dani's ex-husband is "Joseph" and Anita's husband is "Patrick".

and Joseph’s new wife is Elizabeth, who many  of us were excited about and she seemed to be in the early Brooke Logan/Jill Foster vein. I’d say that character would be a good contrast to Dani and Anita, both probably dislike her and have an adversarial relationship with her.

Just a simple and positive post to say how all these announcements today have only gotten me more excited for the show. I absolutely love that Tamara Tunie will be the face of Beyond the Gates. The title change is a good sign because for the US all the most successful soaps have a soapy title, whereas something simple like 'The Gates,' where it's just a place, have usually failed. I always found it interesting that UK was the opposite, but I digress. Anyway, they truly fed us well today and I couldn't be happier.

I mentioned this upthread too.

Elizabeth is Joseph's fiancé after an extra martial affair, and a paralegal.

Yeah, I think that the core family cast should take priority. It’s very early casting announcements.

That being said, I LOVED the PGP closing. It was the only way I felt the episode of their dramas was truly over for that day's airing.

Same

I'm wondering if they trying for CBS recognition in some hires.

Two of the three ladies announced were formerly from CBS soaps.

As a long time CBS viewer...they are very familiar to me.

Since Anita is a singer, here’s some of Tamara Tunie in singing action and talking about a cabaret show she did a few years back. She’s also theatrically trained, which I always thought made sense for this role.

Thank you @Errol for the titles on the main. I just woke up and the first name I saw was Tamara Tunie. OMG! YES, PLEASE. Just the right thing to wake up to because her history in soaps and the industry period is reason enough to tune in.

And I see there's been more casting news and looks pleasing and very excited for the show even more now.

Yep. Be fully prepared to see Anita in a singing scene or two from time to time.

Did we always know Anita/Betty was from Chicago? THR’s article gives that tidbit - MVJ is from Chicago herself, so I am assuming that Anita is at least partially based on one or more of her relatives.

Also a nice midwestern homage to the midwestern setting of the classic P&G soaps.

Announcing the casting on CBS Morning was really smart, I hope we continue to see this kind of network synergy for the promotion. I see the show is trending in the US on Twitter as well and not just on “For You” tab people often mistake as proper trending. This momentum is exciting.
