Y&R Fires Entire Breakdown Writing Staff

That is so sad for Natalie - she had more than 30 years under her belt at Y&R and aside from Janice Ferri Esser was the last link to the Bill Bell years.

It really is mind boggling.

+1 you're absolutely right.

Just terrible to lose these links to history.

Griffith doing breakdowns will be an unmitigated disaster.

Sinclair brainwash hour lol…..I’ll have to remember to use that in the future. But yeah this past year a good number of stations have started to air mid-afternoon newscasts or local lifestyle shows i.e. in the 2PM and 3PM hours in lieu of traditional syndicated fare because it is much cheaper to do so. I can’t recall where it was but it was pointed out one NBC station essentially was only running news and local infotainment type shows in addition to Today and NBC News Daily with nothing syndicated until airing the usual Jeopardy/Wheel of Fortune combo.

KUDOS to Josh Griffith!!! If only DAYS (we're looking at you Giddens) would do the same. Get rid of the useless dead weight. Why are there so many writers who turn out crap? Headwriter to dialogue.  We've all been bitching about the writing for years. Kudos to Josh Griffith for having the balls to shake things up. There were way too many writers in the writers room. Days (if it stays on the air) needs to follow suit and fire about 90% of its staff. You can hate Josh all you want. I admire him.

You need other writers because one person (or two since it's just him and Beall now) doing it all is too much work. And then you have to add his duties as EP.  It's not sustainable in the long run, especially for a one hour show.  I just can't see this working out for him, and Josh will eventually be fired.

Josh Griffith think's he's Tyler Perry, writing everything solo.

Y&R for better and worse is a show that could only function under one vision: Bill Bell. I have not seen another soap completely collapse without a single period of recovery once it's brain left. Y&R has not had once uptick in quality since WJB's death, it's been a straight decline.

No matter how many EP'S and HW'S have passed through the revolving door the show remains in a crap state.

So longs as the show holds onto the #1 spot, CBS will assume the show is doing something right. You know it's bad when GH is now the best produced soap on the air.

File this under contrarian/optimist/conspiracy theories - but I wonder if consolidating the writing and producing is an effort to reduce costs in order to increase options for streaming revenue?  In other words, will they increase efforts to stream the show on foreign platforms and thereby negate the need to pay residuals to WGA writers?

Does Josh think he's TP, or does the network think he's TP? This likely was a cost cutting move by the suits and Josh obliged. I'm not sure I buy the idea that he's drunk with power and forced the others out.

Regardless it's still a disaster waiting to happen. No one person can fulfill all those duties.

For most of his career, Harding "Pete" Lemay was HW, Breakdown Writer, Daily Script Writer & Script Editor in charge of continuity. The veritable one man show! He did it for 8 years. His work was superb. And, he burned out in a huge sort of flame! So he did it but even he couldn't sustain it without burning out! And, there's no way that Josh Griffith is any kind of Pete Lemay. JG was at his best when he had a full Writing Team and Michael Malone and Linda Gottlieb. The idea that he is capable of this is ... lunacy.

This is truly the most shocking soap news to me since Frons cancelled AMC and OLTL at the same time.

It’s not the cost cutting- that is happening everywhere, and there is also the potential strike coming up.  It’s the fact that they are eliminating everyone but Josh. If anyone should have been fired from Y&R it’s JG.  Having him as a nearly sole creative vision is insanity.  He’s beyond a hack at this point, and no visionary.  This is awful news.

    • I've enjoyed Vernon but I wouldn't be opposed to learning more about his life beyond his political work. What kind of family does he come from? Does he have any siblings? I feel like that could be an interesting thing to look at.
    • GH:       A- DAYS:   A- BTG:     B- B&B:     F Y&R:     F
    • I've always said, Robert Newman does not get enough credit for the popularity of Josh/Reva. Had he stayed in '91, and had years to build other relationships before Kim returned, I'm not sure we'd have been stuck with "always".
    • Bizarrely, while I didn't see it, I distinctly remember my younger sister telling me. We were walking to the store, and at the top of the hill she let out "Roger raped Holly", and I swear I remember it echoing for what seemed like forever. She would've been five at the time.  I know,,,which I find extraordinary. I have toyed with the idea of watching Another World for Maeve, Kathleen Widdoes and Beverlee. But watching Vanessa call Emma Snyder "momma" kinda weirded me out. LOL. I believe that's what I read in the recaps from the time as well. I meant, I couldn't quite believe that the audience wouldn't understand that a woman preparing to go to her engagement party  was raped. I know that on ATWT John raped Kim while they were married, resulting in Andy, but I think they shied away from calling that marital rape.
    • I have my fingers crossed for a baby to be named Monica Michelle & called Monica. And, yes, I do realize that is not equal to having her onscreen but, like you said & of course a recast is unthinkable.
    • I would love to have Monica on screen. Leslie Charleson has died. She played the role for 46 years. Monica should pass as well. No one is going to accept a long-term recast for Monica, no matter how great  the actress they could get.
    • Coming into June...   It just occurred to me that seeing Carter/Hope engaged that there was something missing. Oh, yeah! DAPHNE. I missed a few episodes, but she left, right? So is Ridge going to be the spoiler for Carter/Hope now? I felt that Daphne/Carter/Hope had more legs to it. But I guess we will see.   I did enjoy that show circling back around to Luna/Will/Electra. Katie was spitting nothing, but truth. Same for Sheila. And it's good to see Luna vs Electra, and they gave off more adversary chemistry this time around versus when they were at Deacon's.    I was happy to see Liam reduced to C plot.
    • To bring over from the May Sweeps Thread from @Chris B   I know the fashions have gotten mixed reviews but I actually like what the new costume designer is putting the cast in. It feels more modern and the more tacky pieces I feel make sense for rich people. They're buying for the brand and the price and we often see celebs in things like this. Especially for a character like Nikki, I feel the more over the top (and tacky), the more realistic it is.   I agree. While it has been hit and miss no question, I have found it fascinating to watch what the costume designer is attempting to do with the various characters and their clothes. Some have been overdue. Some have been fascinating. But (outside of Billy) not boring to watch. I definitely find it more modern as well.   My growing issue has been it's not good that the best reason to watch Y&R as of late has been to see what people are wearing rather than the writing. It feels like a red flag.
    • Haha. The fact that I stopped regularly viewing at the same time and know what you are talking about is chef's kiss.    I'm slowly bingewatching Nurse's Ball Week. But it's slow for me because a lot of the same tics and writing flaws for me that made me throw up my hands is still evident *cough*CVE*cough* Thankfully, there are some things I like also and from a glance in the GH May Thread, it seem like it had a good Sweeps with good fallout. And do I even need to mention Nina finally slapping the taste out of Carly's mouth? See? Regardless of her flaws, I do enjoy Korte-headed episodes over CVE-headed episodes because they always seem to have more emotional resonance to long-time fans.
