Promised Land, ABC

Airing just two episodes thus far, the new primetime soap “Promised Land” is already not living up to its name in the Nielsen ratings.

Debuting Monday, January 24 on ABC, “Promised Land” averaged a mere 1.893 million viewers and a 0.22 rating in Adults 18-49 in Live+Same Day broadcast finals for episode one, reports ShowBuzzDaily. In week two (January 31), the series held its week ago demo but lost over 100,000 viewers (1.765 million vs 1.893 million) in Live+Same Day broadcast finals.

Overall, lead-in “The Bachelor” averaged 3.607 million viewers and a 0.77 rating in Adults 18-49 for the January 24 episode while attracting 3.537 million viewers and a 0.78 rating in Adults 18-49 for its January 31 episode.

For context, “The Bachelor” airs over two hours (from 8:00-9:00 p.m. ET/PT) and was the highest-rated or the second highest-rated show among the big four networks on both nights. Meanwhile, “Promised Land” airs at 10:00 p.m. and was the lowest-rated (including ties) or the second lowest-rated series on both nights. Also, the first two episodes were made available on Hulu the day after the series premiered (since January 25), marking the first time an ABC series was available on Hulu before airing on the network.

Further, on Monday, January 31, NBC’s special celebrating the life and career of the late Betty White (“Celebrating Betty White: America’s Golden Girl”) won its 10:00 p.m. slot with 4.274 million viewers and a 0.52 rating in Adults 18-49 which was the fourth highest-rated program of the night in the demo and the second most-watched overall.

“Promised Land” follows two Latin families vying for wealth and power in California’s Sonoma Valley. The series stars John Ortiz as Joe Sandoval, Cecilia Suárez as Lettie Sandoval, Augusto Aguilera as Mateo, Christina Ochoa as Veronica Sandoval, Mariel Molino as Carmen Sandoval, Tonatiuh as Antonio Sandoval, Andres Velez as Carlos, Katya Martín as Juana and Rolando Chusan as Billy and Bellamy Young as Margaret Honeycroft.

The show is written and executive produced by Matt Lopez. Adam Kolbrenner and Maggie Malina also serve as executive producers. Executive producer Michael Cuesta also directs. The series is produced by ABC Signature, a part of Disney Television Studios.

And it's the fault of the daytime soaps (or the companies and networks that produce and air them) that they haven't been able to capitalize on the enduring appeal of continuing drama. Daytime dramas, in particular have been too slow to embrace innovation, different creative voices and truly diverse characters and stories. They have been and continue to be the architects of their own demise.

Some shows struggle to find an audience, but it sounds like some viewers tuned in for the premiere episode but didn't return. I'm curious as to whether that changes and viewers give it another chance. I also wonder how long ABC will stick with the series and if they cancel it, will another network or service pick it up.

Honestly, most shows have some fall off from the premiere episode and in that respect falling 100k in viewers is minimal (not that it had much room to fall..). I'm worried though that ABC might end up pulling it if it gets too low as the ratings are pretty horrendous.

It would do better on a Spanish station. I don't know if I'd have the same writers and producers though.

Univision had been a slump with their telenovelas too just like the daytime English counterparts until recently.  They had some modest hits and just recently had the highest rated telenovela in years with La Desalmada which had a 9.3 HH rating for it's season finale.

It's a story of a wife getting justice for the death of her murdered husband. She goes on a mission trying to find out who murdered her husband and why. She vows to destroy that person and make them suffer as much as she has.

For me, they don’t really nail the tone (which is all over the place). It gives me a new appreciation for how Agnes Nixon balanced social consciousness, family drama, and soapy excess, because this show isn’t navigating that very well. Bellamy Young feels like she’s part of a whole other show.

I don't have cable, so I can't see shows broadcast on ABC. Recently I got hulu and discovered that some ABC shows are uploaded to hulu the same day or night.

On the first night that Promised Land aired on ABC, I checked Hulu.  Episodes #1 and #2 both appeared on Hulu that night.  So I watched both together seamlessly.  Really enjoyed it! I liked the twist about the histories of the characters.

I was bummed to have to wait two weeks to see episode #3.

Stayed up last night to wait for Episode 3 to drop to Hulu.  Unfortunately #3 had too much exposition.  I agree with the above post that Bellamy Young doesn't fit.

    • Great episode, better than what the spoilers said. The gambling story was tolerable but Jon Lindstrom sucks in the role. Ambyr Michelle continues to shine. The diner and country club scenes were very well executed.  The Jan and Leslie scenes were very good! My favorite is Eva, now followed by Nicole.
    • Today's show was good. The only part I didn't care for were the Derek/Ashley scenes. I think they are bland together and Derek is very bland by himself. He is the least interesting character on the show IMO. I don't think they have much chemistry together. I appreciated Jan's reaction to Leslie. I like how regular/realistic her and Mona are as characters. Jan came across as very believable of being appalled and even hurt by Leslie's treatment of them and towards Eva in the diner.  Leslie continues to try and manipulate people with IMO her fake caring routine, only to show her true colors after she's confronted/called out for her treatment of others. I continue to dislike the way she mistreats Eva. Speaking of Eva she was great again today. I love her and I like how Martin comforted her in the diner. I liked that Vernon showed concern for her as well. They (especially Martin) will come around quicker to her before others (like the Dupree women) will. I also am glad to see her and Ted continue to bond and him behaving like a father towards her/helping her. He's the only one in her life who is fully trying to stand by her. I look forward to seeing their relationship grow.
    • Xander was screaming at Felicity.  He did do something wrong.  Felicity was clearly upset by it and Cat/Chad told him to stop.  That's fair.  No one deserves to be yelled at their job-and even I think this plot point is too preachy.  It's not acceptable behavior for anyone to do that.
    • When Derek finally appears with only a towel, and his chest and pecs/nipples are finally shown, I say yes.

    • Now, actually not. That thought had not even made it into my head, so, no, so far anyway, I've not seen that. Haven't seen today yet. What you're describing is warped & I think she's feeling genuine empathy & sister bond.
    • Xander was the bigger person apologizing to Cat when he didn't do anything wrong.  he wasn't yelling at Felicity whatsoever, he was asking if she possibly had given them the wrong order by mistake.  He was trying to get to the bottom of what was going on, but Chad/Cat were trying to white knight Felicity even though Felicity was being treated just like anyone else in that situation.   She was the one to bring the order out to them, and usually the person that brings the order out is the one that puts the order together.    I'm still getting a read on the Cat character.   I think she seems to work well when interacting with everyone other than Chad.   Perhaps the new writers can move Cat out of Chad's orbit into another orbit. Paulina has been written quite well the few times she's been on since the writer change.  I think Jackee is enjoying the new writing.. you can tell when she's on screen.
    • LOL - well, Peter was included in the grandkids' section, each named specifically with their $100K trusts.  It must have been the abs...

In Henry's will, he said it had to do with Hart having a chance at being a better person than his father, since his father isn't providing for him (I'm paraphrasing here, but it was about Roger).  Still a little surprised...
    • I'm glad the truth is all out regarding Roman and Kate's secrets from each other, and also happy Roman didn't make much of the letter forgery, because why would he even care? They are a good solid couple. However, not to be mean, when Roman had his little flashback at the DiMera mansion he seemed more like an old man that was lost. How wonderfully aggravating that we still don't know what the hell happened with Johnny the night EJ was shot. I can't wait to find out. I've my feelings clear on Paulina, but she was definitely written much more adult and Jackée even seemed a bit toned down, for the better. Nothing boring about either scenes for me. I like the little drama between Xander and Cat, for the newness of the interaction alone. AnnaLynne McCord is much better at material where she's not acting dementedly lovesick. Seeing that side to Cat was integral to remembering she's not a moron, and I am definitely intrigued by the heck could be calling her. Kevin Lambert returning is a cute little surprise. I never watched Chadwick Hopson in the role though, was he any good?

    • I would love if Sarah were already pregnant and then, even with the reveal that she knew about the letter, that she and Xander would work on things to keep their family intact. But I fear that time is running out. Whatever Philip is doing is probably going to mess up everything. I do like that Kayla and Sarah mentioned the Horton legacy with the hospital and that Kayla would much prefer Xander financing it over EJ. Xander is suddenly Horton adjacent. Belle is as usual a massive hypocrite whining about 'everything' Xander has done to her family when EJ raped her sister, kept her cancer ridden toddler from her, helped Nicole keep the baby she had stolen from Sami for a year, shot her dad in the head, and as recently as last year railroaded her innocent teen nephew into prison where he was beaten up. Sure, Xander shot Brady and Marlena but both of them seem to be over it. Cat should have just graciously accepted Xander's apology. I actually like that he treated Felicity like anybody else and did not coddle her. I hope we see him apologizing though. I wonder if Cat knows that Xander shot their granddad Kon dead last year? She might like him better if she knew. I wonder who is calling her? My money is on Gwen for some reason. I feel like Cat and Chad will get comfy and then we will find out Abby is out there and Gwen has had her. EJ and Cat were far more palatable than Chad and Cat, but EJ makes everybody easier to tolerate. Roman and Kate vs Johnny and Paulina... not sure which were more boring. I guess I'll go with Roman and Kate because he speaks so darn slowly now. Philip is entertaining the heck out of me. I hope he ends up the hero who saves Bo. I think it would be hysterical if he managed to get his hands on the Versovix and EJ ends up buying a useless money pit of a hospital.
