Crypto-gays and same-sex couplings that should have happened

We’ve all heard about same-sex romances that were proposed or rumored and nixed/never came to fruition (Olivia/Holly on GL, Rex/Seth on OLTL). And there’s an interesting chat in the ATWT Cancelled Soaps thread about how many of Doug Marland’s male characters felt like repressed gay men.

We all know daytime has been afraid to go there for most of its history, but which soap characters do you feel were written as crypto-gay/bi/lesbian? And which same-sex actors do you feel shared sexual chemistry enough for you to say, “Hmmm, wouldn’t it be interesting if they went there?”

Certainly, Will/E.J. and Will/Chad (back in the Casey Deidrick days) on DAYS had their share of supporters due to chemistry between the actors.

No question for me Rick and Phillip from Guiding Light. The chemistry between Michael O'Leary and Grant Alekander was simply amazing. One of their biggest storylines involved Philip sleeping with Rick's then wife Meredith. The amazing thing about that storyline was not whether or not Rick would reunite with Meredith - she almost became a nonentity in that storyline - but how Rick would forgive Philip.  Rick and Phillip break up scene was so emotionally played by the two actors you would have thought it was to lovers breaking up instead of just two best friends. And that's just one example of the amazing way in which O'Leary and Alekander skillfully play it off of one another. They truly were one of Guiding Lights greatest super couples.

Weird, I just reading some old synopsis and discussion about that era of Days in the fall of 09 and spring of 2010 when Days actually was decent again and still had a lot going for it. Chad and Will should have hooked  up. It made me sad on how much potential was squandered at the time.

Back watching one of the Y&R re-airs, I thought there was weird sexual tension between Roscoe Born and Christian LeBlanc in their initial meeting scene as Tom/Michael. RB’s staring CLB down seemed more like eye-f***** than an intimidation tactic.

Oh and I once thought OLTL was playing up some kind of repressed longing between Jennifer Bransford’s Georgie and Sandra P. Grant’s Rachel.

    • It cannot be emphasized enough that Angela Lansbury carried CBS primetime on her back through some pretty awful years from the late 1980s to the mid-1990s. Les Moonves will forever be on my s--- list for the sabotage of Murder, She Wrote. 100% this.
    • Is it true that, after the transition from CBS to ABC in 1975, Edge of Night had a very short-lived very unliked "new" opening theme?  I understand it was rather quickly replaced by the Cortner and Barranco melody that lasted until the show was cancelled.  Is this true?  And if so, does anyone have audio or video of the short-lived and reviled "new" opening theme song?
    • Greg Sumner intro in season 5 as the new villain was the finishing touch on Knots Landing going full-on 1980s primetime soap. William Devane had a commanding presence from his first episode, but I don't think he took over the show.
    • Interesting.  Does CHCH have this as an arrangement?  Or is CBS unaware that that CHCH didn't preempt for Memorial Day, and is still ahead?
    • Olivia did have a good reason for what she did. Still, I'd think she would be slower to pass such harsh judgment on Lois since she knows what she herself lived through. I'm hoping we get a softer Olivia when she reflects on everything.   I'm going to disagree with this. I don't think the character has been ruined and trashed, and I don't think it's impossible to come back from this. Yes, a great case can be made that this is out-of-character for Lois, but I can also make a case for people doing out-of-character things when life deals us crazy and impossible moments. Because of the story we're getting from this, I think it was worth putting Lois into this situation.

    • Hello everyone. I'm new to this forum but I have been a soap opera fan for only a few years. I started watching General Hospital in the 2010s on tv due to boredom. It wasn't good but it was okay enough to get curious about the soap opera genre. When I eventually got internet I started researching 90s and 2000s General Hospital. I have started only recently researching 80s and 90s Days of Our Lives. I was shocked when I found out that a black soap opera is going to be made, especially because the genre as a whole was on a downward trajectory. Now here I am as a black woman seeing a soap opera from the start. I'm all for Beyond the Gates succeeding.
