The reel shown during the Emmys was a different one. His performance in today's episode wasn't Emmy worthy. I agree that competition was weak in 91. But just his building from Devon’s earnest appeal to Carmen on Dru’s behalf, his frustration with not being able to hear her as well not being understood, up to the amazement and rage at Carmen’s twisting of the situation. It’s just a really great performance. I remember people being outraged that he beat GL’s Tom Pelphrey and ATWT’s Jesse Soffer that year, as if he wasn’t half the actor they were. In some ways, that outrage was understandable: Soffer and especially Pelphrey were leads on their shows, opportunities only offered to white (or very rarely Latinx) dudes on daytime, and the Emmys just reward a few good scenes out of a year. But Bryton never got the chance to shine as much as they did. He was a grown man playing a children’s illness story, completely emasculated and a secondary presence on his show. (But again, it’s funny: when Bryton appeared on Vampire Diaries, people thought he was wonderful.) I will never blame Bryton for what happened with Devon. It’s been the writing 100%. Someone on the old newsgroup commented that the epi is nice because you get to see all the women together having fun. (instead of only Dru with Olivia, or only Cricket with Nina). The party has Cricket, Nina, Gina, Lauren, Luan, Olivia, Drucilla, and Lynne. It sounds like fun. And despite Christine and Paul being bland white bread, the shower sounds much better. However some of the dialog that was recapped was explaining American customs to Luan. (which is weird because Luan owns and manages a restaurant in town. I got the impression from recaps and other history that she'd been in the US for a while, but had only recently found Jack?). Well, I suppose they could cut that dialog or perhaps make it simply that she's a party guest and not explain how they know her. Luan is also in the Phyllis-runs-down-Christine-and-Paul episode. A whole chunk of the epi is about Jack planning to take Luan to the Virgin Islands for a week. He excitedly discusses this with Ashley, Ashley comments that Jack and Luan share a son, but Ash doesn't say his name. Luan is in scenes with her daughter Mai and Mai is trying to convince her mother to go and have a good time. Mari Jo has scenes complaining to Rick that she(Mari Jo) was engaged to Jack but now Jack has fallen for "that Vietnamese woman" -- and Mari Jo wanted to go skiing with Jack but instead Jack is going to the Virgin Islands with Luan. So there are several scenes talking *about* Luan. And the scenes between Luan and Mai. How would they cut all that out? Then again there is the problematic dialog: Jack says Luan has worked hard and has never taken a vacation in her life, and he is going to have Lauren pick out some Fenmore's resort clothing for Luan, and he's taking her to the island because she might need to relax for a week, (implying that she's the stereotypical all-work person). And then the conversation between Luan and her daughter Mai. Mai says she(Mai) has learned geography in school and describes the Virgin Islands to Luan, who knows nothing about them. (But again, I have to ask, a businesswoman living in America knows nothing of this?) I think they would have to keep Luan's scenes. But maybe edit out a couple of lines of dialog. Oh, and some of the epis over Sept.Oct.Nov.Dec 1994 have Keemo and Luan wanting to learn American culture. Or Genoa City residents explaining to them about certain American customs. to the point where I got impression from one of the rec.arts.tv.soaps.cbs recappers that it was like a drinking game, you can bet the words "An American Custom" will be used in the episode. Christine talks to Keemo like he's a kindergartner, yet he speaks perfect unaccented American English. (Still don't know if Keemo is in the Sept 21, 1994 episode or not). I thought it would be just the scenes with John, but by including that long flashback at the beginning they allowed him to show more range: the anger at Nikki the night before, the cooler passive-aggressive anger in the morning, and then the regret. IMO he may have had an edge from his time on ABC. I think those were Emmy worthy scenes and he's a good actor, but I've been watching some of the older Emmy shows recently and it's amazing how much Y&R got shut out of the acting categories. Although they won an Emmy for Best Show just two years after the debut, they were shut out of the acting categories throughout the 70s and not only did nobody win until 1985 (Beth Maitland's was well deserved, not so convinced about TEB), they proceeded not to win any of other acting awards for the rest of the decade! It's so ridiculous. The Emmys were always an ABC/P&G fest despite Y&R being the #1 soap and having some really excellent actors. Bergman was worthy, but for sure so were Braeden and Lester, not to mention Jerry Douglas in supporting after watching the divorce storyline play out, wow. And Eileen Davidson, Jeanne Cooper... come on. Thank you to those who are posting details about the Luan storyline. I really don't remember much about her other than her red wedding dress. I'll be paying attention to the dialogue thanks to all of your posts. Another thing that was silly about Jack being a Vietnam vet was before Jill gets shot when Jack gets a gun. The bartender from Gina's gives it him after some break-ins (he's living in the room upstairs) and he has no clue how to use it. And after he gets assigned to community service he acts very entitled, doesn't want to take orders or mop the floor. Jack was always a spoiled, arrogant brat. It's not credible to believe he was in the army a decade before. That story was one of Bill Bell's biggest missteps. Regarding yesterday's classic, IMO Bryton was great but VR really stole the show. You really felt how manic Dru was when she came home, how she was ashamed to admit she'd been fired but she couldn't keep it in, and how Devon had a totally different view of her than Carmen did. And having Victoria want her to work at home but HR and Legal saying no - I like that bit of reality. It's a contrast to ridiculous plots like Adam, Kevin, and Phyllis running around indignant about felonies they committed. It felt unfair because as the audience we "know" Drucilla the same way Devon does. From Carmen's point of view though, if someone breaks into your place and destroys your things, you probably are going to press charges and not want to go to work with them. There was no true villain. Not so much because of them, but the other stuff we can see. I especially look forward to seeing Vivica Fox here, which is before my time. While I think there were better ways to showcase Paul and Christine, I guess it’s nice they’re getting something. Today with Emmy week I just finished Bryton’s episode and am now onto Eric Braeden’s episode. I know it’s unpopular, but I loved LML’s time at least until Victoria Rowell left. In this episode you got great business story, diversity with Ji Min and Adrian Korbel, the Winters as real multi-dimensional characters who mattered. It was lovely seeing a Victoria primarily supporting THEM. That wouldn’t happen now. In addition to Bryton, this was a year that Victoria Rowell deserved an Emmy. Idk who won in 2007, but that is Victoria’s Emmy. The Victor episode is interesting but not because of him. I don’t know how he won for this. Eric Braeden should have multiple Emmys and it’s insane to me he only got one for blah work. What I love about this episode is getting to see the original Grace! I feel Josie Davis would’ve worked better as Victoria. She’s a fine actress but clearly they wanted to take the character in a different direction. This is the best I’ve seen of Shari Shattuck’s Ashley who I never enjoyed. The Malcolm/Dru, Olivia/Neil scenes were nice and I also loved Katherine and her fur visiting John. It’s amazing how much they packed into these episodes. You still get a similar number of characters per episode now, but it’s just so damn boring. She was with Victor, and I really don’t understand her uber-concern over Nikki’s health, sleeping in, etc. This episode reminded me of how often Bill Bell’s writing frustrated me. All these scenes and conversations with Nikki, but no one tells her what they’re thinking? No one says “You were bombed and passed out”?
