Indeed, Ed Scott got DAYS looking the best it had in a decade during his year there as Co-EP. B&B remains a visually appealing show, regardless of what's going on with the writing, and it remains its high production values. The look of Y&R has fallen apart in recent years - I'd love to know what Ed Scott would do to fix that god awful Newman ranch set.

I always wanted to see what Scott and JFP could do together. She likes that darker lighting esthetic, and they both usually produce shows that look more expensive than they are (not counting her cheap looking Y&R).  If she was a fan of melodrama at all Y&R with Scott would have worked.

And this is coming from someone that is not a JFP fan.

Nooo. Jill ruined the Y&R look; she turned it into Santa Barbara.  Awful. And Mel turned up the lighting even more. I thought Morina would bring some darker, Wisconsin Frank Lloyd Wright design back to the show (from the 1980s) but the lightening is worse than under Jill or Mal.  The sets are awful. I never thought I'd say this but with the exception of Hope Brady's recently showcased psychedelic half den on Days, Salem often looks better than Genoa City.

As someone that watched her OLTL, GH, and now quite a bit of GL, she absolutely prefers moody, dark lighting.  I cannot speak to Santa Barbara, never watched it. I was shocked at how awful her Y&R looked, because she does usually produce better looking shows, and in my experience as a viewer, she uses darker lighting often.

However, Scott made DAYS look beautiful when he was there, even if the show was not as good as it looked.  And I agree, there are times in the last 3 or 4 years when I saw DAYS scenes and thought they looked better than Y&R and GH.

These shows don't have budget to look great anymore and the complications of producing a daily soap in a pandemic climate won't help with those limitations. That's why it's more important than ever to focus on the content and creative aspect - which they can't get right anyway.

Even B&B's production quality is not what it once was, and I can only assume that's because of recent cuts to its licensing fees.

I noticed that B&B has joined the others with the shrunken sets. I wonder how GH is able to avoid this. They still have so many sets and all of their sets are a good size. It’s refreshing watching and seeing movement. So many different locations, offices, parks, public areas, homes etc. With great writing it would be the gold standard.

It's my understanding that to save money, the shows are having more permanent sets. Therefore to fit as many as possible into the established studio space the sets have been reduced in size.

The money savings come from sets not having to be erected/ torn down when needed and stored elsewhere.

Previously there were a few sets that would remain say GCAC, Crimson Lights and Jabot set. The rest of the space would be used for whatever the writing demanded eg Newman Ranch, Sharon's cottage. hotel rooms etc.

Writers were directed to write to a more limited number of sets.

THIS started on B&B circa 2017... Katie’s new house (aka apartment) was the first super TINY set which could not fit more 3 persons in a scene.

Then they remodeled the Forrester guest house by killing the first room and reducing it by half. Brookes bedroom which once was a proper set lost half it’s size, too. The most apparent changes happened when they got rid of liams and Wyatts offices at Spencer Publications. There used to be three independent Spencer sets. Now: it’s all Bills Office with different furniture and some not so subtle background changes. It works somehow, but it is telling. The Forrester Mansion and Forrester Creations are the only big sets they still use. The stage is rather small - They used to Change the sets on stage for each week. This is no longer happening to save money. B&B compensated a lot of this set shrinkage by filming outdoors on the roof: Il Giardino, the FC gym set etc - Or actually on location at the Cliff House. for more than a year they haven’t done this either. My guess is that was also too costly in the long run.

    • Just thinking how the Ruth/Leticia guest spot really cemented how Days had changed. Stunt casting with a campy/comedy character in a 'wacky' storyline was something that a few years previously would have been completely out of place on Days (and most other soaps for that matter).
    • I am interested to see how they handle Leslie/Dana down the road. If she continues in this path, it would be unrealistic to have her around. Like other shows have done this with a 'villian' character and ended up with people looking stupid putting up with someone they detest. Another thought-could they be building up to a murder story? Maybe Les/Dan will be left in a coma and we will have a whodunit with several characters as suspect. It would also be a chance to redeem her I wonder how long the show will go w/o resorting to soap cliche stories-twins,switched at birth, murder mystery, long lost child etc
    • Yeah, Martin really did make me laugh when him and Smitty jumped up to drag Leslie out. I am interested in seeing how this fallout will impact his storyline as well. Especially since he is so protective regarding his family/family's image. I am interested in seeing how he will interact with Eva for the time being, they did have a warmer interaction earlier on once they met. But he seems to have doubts about her possibly being Ted's right now. I wonder how long it might take for him to come around with her. I could see the younger generation warming up to her quicker than the older ones. Though of course I think there will be anger/tension for a while regarding the reveal and her role in it. Perhaps Naomi/Chelsea will ease up on Eva first then eventually Martin/Kat might down the line. I really do love Nicole. I'm glad that DD is playing her. She really is the heart of the family and also agree the show. She is so easy to root for and I'm looking forward to seeing how things work out for her. I am enjoying the development of most of the characters on this show. I enjoy most of them including Bill with his trifling self lol. I do feel that Bill's love for his daughters is genuine and that gives him some depth. A few of the characters I don't care for that much (like Bill, Ashley, Vanessa). I wasn't too big on Andre at first, but I am warming up more to him as the actor is settling into the role. I like most of the characters on this show. Also, I am interested in seeing what happens if Eva indeed goes and lives with the new doctor that was introduced. I could see this adding another layer to her story, maybe she will become more vixen-ish, on what type of relationship they end up having. And/or maybe she will end up becoming more hardened as she deals with being an outcast, especially if she falls out with Leslie as well. I think that AM will do a good job of showcasing the different layers of this character as she deals with the fallout of the affair/paternity reveal.

Got another sad news from the Bahamian community (not a celebrity)  https://www.instagram.com/p/DJMSrYCgyes/?igsh=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ== Former Bahamian Senate President J Henry Bostwick, Husband of former 1st Bahamian Female Cabinet Minister Dame Janet Bostwick is dead yesterday on his 86th birthday.    Thanks and for those who've aren't familiar with the talk shows in The Bahamas on this thread here, his talk show named The Freedom March with Dr Rodney Moncur that airs on ILTV and The Beat 103.5 FM Nassau every weekday afternoons. IIRC, he suffered a illness before he died.  Here's the link for his final taping of the show before his death: https://ewnews.com/this-is-powerful-rodney-moncurs-final-sign-off/

    • One thing I thought about is if Hayley will have a reaction to Bill threatening to kidnap and sell a baby. That's another level of viciousness and with her just having thought she was pregnant it might make her feel some type of way.
    • You're welcome. Fall 1982-Spring 1985 was the peak of primetime soaps. What a time to have been alive.
    • 1990/91 Cheers, Roseanne, A Different World, The Cosby Show, Empty Nest, The Golden Girls were still Top 10 shows, and Murphy Brown and Designing Women became Top 10 shows. It was the following season that I think was the transition season for sitcoms.
    • @xtr I loved Martin in Thursday's episode, he was almost a different character. I thought he was flirty, funny, carefree, and giggly. Glad I have someone to share my top 2 women(Nicole and Eva) with, I agree Nicole is the heart of the Dupree family, and also the heart of the show IMO. We rode into the show on the passenger side of her car, lol. What I am enjoying the most about the show, is that they did such a great job character building, because all I care about is the CHARACTER journey. Nicole, Eva, Leslie, Dani, Chelsea, etc. very invested in what's coming next. I even feel that way about Mona, Shanice, and Doug.
