The Media/Journalism Thread

I do agree that, in general, some of of the so-called "town halls" on various networks have planted people from a political party asking biased questions and/or irrelevant/ignorant questions.

There was an Oct. 15 event in Georgia billed as a women's town hall asking Trump questions.
It aired on Fox but it was edited.  According to CNN:
https://edition.cnn.com/2024/10/16/media/fox-news-women-town-hall-supporters/index.html

“I want to thank you for coming to a room full of women the current administration would consider domestic terrorists,” a woman named Alicia said to laughter from the audience before a question about foreign policy.
But a portion of Alicia’s question was edited by Fox News to remove her admission that she was voting for Trump.
“I proudly cast my vote for you today. I hope they count it,” she added, according to an audio recording from a CNN reporter in attendance.

While it’s common for a pre-taped event or interview to be edited for time, Alicia’s short remark came in the middle of her question, which remained intact on the broadcast.

During another moment missing from Fox’s broadcast, Trump asked the crowd who they were voting for, leading to a chant of “Trump, Trump” breaking out by the attendees.

Fox News did not respond to CNN questions about the missing remarks.

Yeah I agree there definitely needs to be more fact-checking on both interviews and on town halls.

@Vee This is some of what I was talking about with the media hype over the Al Smith dinner.

It just disgusts me. This is what our media wants and I never know how many people will fall for it. Oh Trump was so funny, even Democrats laughed! Where was Kamala Harris, why wasn't she supporting the Catholics, on and on and on.

I think the press is also being willfully naive on the gender optics of the Al Smith dinner.

It is a white-tie formal evening.  She would have had to wear a gown, in a campaign where her team seems to have made the conscience (and smart) choice to keep her in pants.  The press comments on her choice of dress, the designer, and the cost of the bespoke outfit would've totally swept her victory over Bret Baier under the rug.

I'm not suggesting that is why didn't go.  But, it plays into the narrative about why it was smart for her not to go.  I mean, let Trump sit there looking far too comfortable in an old-fashioned tailcoat, two rows in front of the woman who successfully prosecuted him, while cussing to Catholics.  It is far better for her campaign for her to be in the Midwest, successfully clapping back at the two Trumpers who tried to heckle her.

I just don't think most voters are seriously caring about the Al Smith dinner or 'supporting the Catholics' in 2024. Grinnin' Brian Stelter may have been typically charmed by Trump's bad jokes, but the public doesn't really register that stuff.

I don't think the incident in of itself matters (and it is also a trap, because the same people would have said she was laughing with Trump instead of campaigning in a swing state) but it's just another brick in the wall the media is trying to build around her campaign, which so many people seem to be falling for.

99.9 % of the voters have no idea who Al Smith was or give a darn about the Al Smith dinner.  Other things the media peddles that are likely untrue.

1. Black male voters moving to Trump - How many elections do we need to keep hearing this and it being proven false? I just can't with this.

2. Latino voters - This is a varied base of voters, In Florida, the latinos there are completely diff than those in Arizona or Texas or California or Nevada or name your place.  The media wants to pretend they are a monolith

3. All young men are moving to Trump - Based on what podcasts?

If I believe polls(and I don't much anymore) I see that Harris leads women by 15 points and Trump leads men by 9%. Just based on that metric because more women vote and we are 54% of the voting base.

If people are obsessing over polls(we see this all over social media) and not volunteering to help, well they can look at their own reflection in the mirror after election day.

It already is. Now Trump was wandering on stage for 20 minutes at a rally last night because "his mic went out". Forget that they always have multiple mics available. Something much more drastic is going to happen to him before election day.

And back to Al Smith, I was raised Catholic - I don't consider myself one anymore and have not for a long time. I guarantee that 21% of the population that are allegedly catholic - most of them haven't stepped foot in a church in years.   My parents never gave a dime to Catholic Charities.  My mom was very careful in terms of who they donated to and when it came to charities, she always researched to see how much overhead they have.  Catholic Charities is one that has a lot.  Doesn't mean they might not do good work, but look into the Salvation Army whose overhead is minimal in comparison.

This is excellent and one of my close friends has been saying this for ages.  He also had a very similar experience at his employer as what the Pitchbot is mentioning related to his.  This goes on at a ton of places as we all know. The Times is not immune.  Sadly it's ruined their brand to an extent. Couple that with the dying out of newspapers and you get this.  I do think that many of these "reputable" news sources have incorrectly made the assumption clickbait is it. It's not.

    • Today May 11, 2025, Pope Leo briefly addressed the crowd in the square.  He sang the prayer to Mary and then said:   Dear brothers and sisters, The immense tragedy of the Second World War ended eighty years ago, on 8 May, after having claimed sixty million victims. In today’s dramatic scenario of a piecemeal third world war, as Pope Francis stated many times, I too address the world’s leaders, repeating the ever-timely appeal: “Never again war!”. I carry in my heart the sufferings of the beloved Ukrainian people. May everything possible be done to reach an authentic, just and lasting peace, as soon as possible. Let all the prisoners be freed and the children return to their own families. I am deeply saddened by what is happening in the Gaza Strip: may there be an immediate ceasefire! Let humanitarian aid be provided to the stricken civil population, and let all the hostages be freed. On the other hand, I have welcomed with satisfaction the announcement of the ceasefire between India and Pakistan, and I hope that through the upcoming negotiations, a lasting accord may be reached soon. https://www.vatican.va/content/leo-xiv/en/angelus/2025/documents/20250511-regina-caeli.html
    • Lol! I'm quite sure it would.
    • But that is pretty much situation normal for all soaps. They do not tend to continue to show things like surgical scars. They also play fast & loose with hospital procedures.
    • re: prior two posts about Trump's new opulent plane contrasted with utter starvation in Gaza... Trump and Netanyahu are giving "Let them eat cake".  And it's horrific. In 2013, Pope Francis removed a bishop from running the Limburg Germany diocese because he was constructing an opulent 31-million-euro building. This is from Reuters obit of Francis: https://www.reuters.com/world/obituary-pope-francis-shook-up-church-with-simplicity-raising-conservative-ire-2025-04-21/ From the start, Francis sent clear signals to priests and bishops about the type of Church he wanted. He said there was no room for "careerists or social climbers" among the clergy, told cardinals they should not live "like princes," and said the Church should not "dissect theology" in lush salons while there were poor people around the corner. "If investments in banks fall, it is a tragedy and people say 'what are we going to do?' but if people die of hunger, have nothing to eat or suffer from poor health, that's nothing. This is our crisis today. A Church that is poor and for the poor has to fight this mentality," he said early in his papacy. -- Pope Francis stood up for the poor, the unhoused, the migrants of all faiths.  He lived simply and ordered that when he died, that he wished to be interred in a simple wooden coffin. I sincerely hope that the new pope Leo will follow Francis' example.
    • Co Sign!!!!   I have been watching the show regularly over the last few weeks and am pleasantly surprised by how much easier it is to watch each day. This definitely is confirmation for me that Paula and Jeanne wrote the stroke episodes, cause I felt the same way watching those. Could be more exciting for sure, but interactions now make more sense and everything seems to be a bit more character driven which is great. I will add though, there are still about 10 or so characters i'd love to see gone, and hope a few will exit in the future! Otherwise, happy with the changes so far.

    • There is suffering everywhere you look, says mother of emaciated baby girl trapped in Gaza https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/czrv5rl73zdo Quoting excerpts from BBC article: The baby's mother Najwa, 23, is changing Siwar's nappy. She weighs just over 2kg (4lb 6oz). A baby girl of five months should be around or over 6kg. "There was no food when I gave birth to her," says Najwa. "If I wanted to feed myself so I could breastfeed her, I had no nutrients to make my health better... She now only drinks formula milk, and we don't know how we'll be able to provide it for her." Israel has banned international journalists from entering Gaza to report independently. According to Siwar's doctor, Ziad al-Majaida, "Nothing enters through the borders, no milk, food or anything. This leads to big problems here for the kids. This baby needs a specific type of milk. It was available before, but because of the border closure, the stocks have run out for a while now." Since the beginning of the year, according to the UN, about 10,000 cases of acute malnutrition among children have been identified. Food prices have rocketed by as much as 1,400%. Charity kitchens, which have helped hundreds of thousands of Gazans, are shutting as food supplies run out. Twenty-five bakeries supported by the World Food Programme have been forced to close. Israel cut off all humanitarian aid and other supplies from entering Gaza on 2 March, and resumed its military offensive two weeks later The United Nations has said the Israeli blockade constitutes "a cruel collective punishment" on civilians. The UN's humanitarian director, former British diplomat Tom Fletcher, said that international law was unequivocal. "As the occupying power, Israel must allow humanitarian support in... Aid, and the civilian lives it saves, should never be a bargaining chip," he warned. From the BBC reporter: I put this point to Boaz Bismuth, a leading member of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party. He (Bismuth) denies there is an aid crisis caused by the blockade. "There is food in Gaza... Israel wouldn't do such a restriction if the population didn't have food. I mean, I know my country perfectly well," he (Bismuth) said. BBC reporter: I put it to Bismuth that he was denying the evidence of people's eyes, that children were starving. "There are not starving children. I repeat again." He (Bismuth) said that there had been allegations months ago of famine, ethnic cleansing and genocide in Gaza "which was crap". ----  ----  ---- A UK-based advocacy group for Israel has the nerve to claim war may reduce obesity in Gaza https://www.theguardian.com/world/2025/may/10/uk-lawyers-for-israel-condemned-over-claim-war-may-reduce-obesity-in-gaza
    • Joel Crothers would have been perfect as Owen (maybe because Margo wasn't too far off Denise). A shame he couldn't have played a dual role. Eliot did have more room to grow. I wonder if whatever allegedly happened with Denny Albee played a part in both their exits.
