Surviving R. Kelly

All My Shadows

Please tell me y'all have been watching this craziness! I've looked at R. Kelly sideways since I was like 12 when all the infamous video was released and never understood how people continued to support him without calling out the very obvious and blatant abuse going on in his circle. At this point, I'm turning up to Ignition whenever it comes on, but that's the beginning and end of any reverence or respect I pay him.

Outside of the very disturbing stories the various women have been sharing, the most interesting parts for me have been seeing how certain career points were very carefully plotted with an agenda in mind, namely how "I Believe I Can Fly" was partially meant to solicit support and praise when people were starting to get hip to his sh!t. I was in elementary school when Space Jam and the song came out, and of course, I had to hear it literally everywhere, including about a week or two when they played it in the cafeteria at lunch time every single day. I hated it then, but now it just grosses me out.

In the midst of delving into all of this, I listened to his "song" I Admit from last year in which he spends 20 minutes offering excuse after excuse for everything before exploding at the end. It's actually pretty terrifying, and he really sounds like a man who doesn't have long for this world.

Does anyone have a link where I can watch this?  I don't subscribe to cable anymore so I don't get Lifetime.  If anyone knows of a solid, virus-free link PM me.

I did see there were like half a million tweets about the series though.

I don't own any R. Kelly music but somewhere I still have Aaliyah's debut album, which I can't seem to part with.  The next time I come across that CD, I have to remember to scrub out R. Kelly's blurry image (where he hovers in the background, from what I remember) with very thick black magic marker.

On that debut CD, her cover of At Your Best sends me and breaks my heart all at once.  Even more so when I really stop and consider the lyrics and what must have been going on in her life at the time she sang them.

The fact that she was just one of multitudes of young Black women who were exploited by this creature...

Folks on a show admitted to committing crimes in the name of R Kelley and no one is asking that these people be prosecuted because they shed a few tears?

Lady Gaga and others???  Needed a documentary to see the truth?

So many despicable people here...some worse than the actual predator pedophile!  Fed children to a disgusting sicko and no one is challenging this!

Interesting that executives from RCA and Sony claim that dropping a well-known artist from a company/label is not a decision that they take lightly when both have been known to dump well-known and highly regarded artists all the time.

My guess is that both are biding their time to see whether outrage diminishes over time, allowing them to go back to "business as usual" or whether there will be a sustained drop in airplay and a decline is sales/downloads.

Why It Could Be Hard to Mute R. Kelly

The Gaga post seems about as fake and try-hard as she is most of the time. I've only ever really listened to the version of "Do What U Want" with Christina Aguilera, so I tend to forget that the more well-known version has RK (nor have I seen the video). I'm not understanding her attributing the song to repressed sexual abuse when it is quite obviously about sensational journalism.

"Mr. DeRogatis veers from expletive-laden indignation to choked-back tears when describing the effects of Mr. Kelly’s alleged behavior with what he estimates to be at least 48 women. But he has a special frustration with the rest of the news media, which, he says, failed to follow The Sun-Times’s investigative lead, and for years made light of the charges or ignored them altogether."

Dream Hampton has had to post a guard outside her home and Mr. DeRogatis has had someone fire gunshots into his home.  That perpetrator has never been caught.

    • I don't suppose you have that August 4, 1995 episode @soapfan770 has with Hope throwing Nikki out of The Newman Ranch?
    • I have taken extremely long breaks from the show because of Sonny and I didn’t watch in the 90’s so I didn’t realize this was a crutch the show used all the time. Hell even though Maurice hates it, it was the most I could tolerate Sonny because he was written as the ass.hole he actually is at his core. His meds working again don’t erase all the characters I’ve either liked or accepted that I had to watch he and Jason murder and somehow come out as the good guys.
    • When I saw the pic of two kids on a stoop, I immediately though it was Samantha and Tyrell but that could be a red herring. The picture is quite old so maybe it is Hayley and June. This would help to bring Naomi back into Hayley and Bill's orbit. If June is Tyrell and Samantha's mother, that story would seem to be a dead end - unless Martin and Smitty adopted them through improper means.
    • I would DIE if Shanice’s mom lived beyond the gates and was just as messy I loved her so much. Give. Me. More. Absolutely loved this scene. Looking forward to more bonding between them. She is such a find. If her agents are smart, they’re booking her on bigger things as soon as possible. I want to see her blow up. She is THAT good to me. Ambyr and Trisha are the stars of this show for me and why I watch. Bingo. This show actually feeling like a soap that moves has made it so hard for me to watch the others anymore. I love you Thank god you said this. I wish we’d stop taking the bait but this needed to be said. White male leads cheat ALLLLLLLL the time. But this poster seems to think omg two black men that cheated decades apart are about to set us back somehow. I’m about to add them to the ignore list with Donna, I’m sick of the baiting. This was perfectly stated. Preach my friend, preach. As for yesterday’s episode I loved it. The show is handling the fall out from the Eva reveal so damn well for me. And I LOVED that Ted final scene holding Eva’s hand. I guess I’m in the minority since the recast announcement was made but I will miss Maurice and his chemistry with all of his costars as Ted and really wish he could’ve played the entire fall out of the story.
    • I would love to see it as part of a backlot shopping district where characters can bump into one another in a more natural way. Lately there has too much getting up and leaving then coming back during meals at Orphey's and Uptown. It's becoming a distraction. There could be shops, more restaurants and a coworking space. All of the "you will never be a Dupree" lines definitely are pointing to this. This is one of my favorite stories. I love stories about show business and MVJ has a background in the music industry so I'm looking forward to seeing where this goes. Anita instigated the breakup - we have already seen her mean streak come out with Hannah and Eva. I expect one member (she called Sharon today) to be holding a grudge and another member (Tracy) to be somewhat bitter but more open to the idea of a tour, playing the role of peacemaker between Anita and Sharon. Maybe Sharon will pull a Mary Wilson and write tell-all about Anita.

    • I would have been more impressed if it hadn't been built on a con (Sonny's meds already being used to make sure he would be exonerated later on). The show has been doing this dance with Sonny since the mid '90s, including Mulcahey's previous stint. I almost prefer them just being honest, as Laura doesn't have a great deal of integrity to lose anyway. The problem is Sonny is just completely spent as a character. If he wasn't, we wouldn't have to see this comment from Laura again and again. He would actually be doing something on the canvas. Instead, he's written like he's already dead. If only.
    • It seems like Steve actually enjoys scenes with Jane.  I really think Steve has just mellowed out in general and is more open to doing what is asked.  He's not 30 anymore so he's probably just happy to keep getting work especially after the whole Covid situation. If he ended up with Brenda I wouldn't complain either lol. You probably won't get that 10% out of me, but I may consider if you drop the Jordan love haha!
    • I'm sticking to my theory that June is Hayley's sister (maybe a cousin since this show showcases cousins). Hayley really needs someone else to interact with because her being isolated to just Bill is not working. Eva only seems to have a backbone when it comes to Kat. She had no problem rubbing it in her face that they are sisters. Sharon hanging up on Anita was a good little nudge for that storyline. At least one of them having a name is promising to them actually showing up.
    • Reviewing the 1985/86 sophomore slaughtering and sophomore surprise. The Cosby Show 23 of 25 episodes finished #1 in their original broadcast, one episode finished 2nd, and one episode finished 3rd. Murder, She Wrote 18 of 22 episodes were the highest-rated drama in their original broadcast and 19 of 22 episodes were CBS's highest-rated scripted series in their original broadcast.
