One thing I’ve also noticed is that this feels much “younger” than the previous iterations, even though the actors are of similar ages. Some of that is early 30s feels younger in the world at large than it did 15-20 years ago. Hopefully we get a well-rounded sense of these characters’ lives, including their work lives, which we saw in the previous versions.

I hope this reimagining doesn’t come across as a series of ticked identity boxes and trauma porn. It doesn’t have to be as light as, say, Noah’s Arc, but you know? Even the Showtime version, with its all-white primary cast, could often feel like it was bogged down by “issues” and trying to cover too many bases to tell a coherent story. We shall see how Stephen Dunn juggles all of this.

But I liked Noah's Arc. I would love to see how it would work now in today's time.

But I see what you mean. Younger these days does seem different than what it used to be. But that said...I do hope it's not going to be all Twinkville. On the other hand, I also don't want it to not be just ticking off a series of identity boxes either. I remember then that became an issue for LOOKING coming out of Season 1 and going into Season 2 even though Agustin, his Season 1 bf (off topic actor now playing OBAMA on the FIRST LADY and being in BLACK WIDOW...way to move up in the world), and Richie were all not white.

But...let's see how it goes.

A group interview with the creatives behind each version: Russell T. Davies (the British original), Ron Cowen and Daniel Lipman (the Showtime version), and Stephen Dunn (the new Peacock version).

Oooooo

Yeah, this isn’t good so far, I’m sad to report. The first two episodes of this new series make me respect Russell T. Davies’ version so much more. He packed so much characterization and insight and humor into that U.K. original. This just doesn’t work at all. Doesn’t have a handle on its tone. Is it a breezy soap with explicit sex? An indie-film set of character sketches? Plus, the massacre stops it cold. It overwhelms the show. The cast also lacks chemistry. I might give it a couple more episodes to see if it comes together.

The Brodie character (the Stuart/Brian of the show) feels less fully formed. In the previous version, the character was an exec, but here he’s an adrift ex-med student (a backstory that I don’t really buy). The lead actor (Devin Way) is gorgeous with great ass but reads as too young.

I figured it was garbage. The original is airing on Showtime and on demand.

It’s getting better in Episodes 3 and 4, so I’m understanding why they released all of the episodes as a binge instead of a weekly rollout, which would have been deadly.

Watched all eight episodes. It’s a mess. It wants to capture this moment of inclusiveness and some of the varied experiences not usually portrayed in gay media (particularly surrounding characters with disabilities), and that’s all honorable, but it winds up biting off more than it can chew, and does its characters a huge disservice. They tap into a black queer drag community that comes through vividly, but the show pushes them to the margins. The characters QAF does focus on are rather flat and boring, aside from Jesse James Keitel’s trans character Ruthie.

They try to introduce soapier elements (borderline incestuous love triangles), but it all feels so desperate and forced. There’s one love triangle that happens late in the season that’s a real WTF. And what a shame to have a show set in New Orleans and not make more use of it.

The lead is the weakest of the cast (neither Brian nor Stuart were this unlikable and you could understand why they commanded such power over men—this guy Brodie just seems like a petulant child).

So lip service.

Thank you for the heads-up @Faulkner. Might still be worth a watch, but in no hurry to then.

And no use of their setting on top of that? Wow.

They do have one episode where the city is really well-used late in the season, but where are the accents? There’s a unique feel to NO that the show doesn’t tap into.

It is worth a watch, I’d say, and some people seem to really enjoy it. I found it a letdown.

The only story I liked was the Noah/Julian relationship...that started as two guys becoming friends and falling for one another with organic obstacles.
