Offbeat Soap Facts/News bits/Anecdotes you still remember

Very interesting. If Bill Bell were still in charge of Y&R when that blurb came out, I doubt she would've been welcomed back to the show. I don't know what Deidre did, but in Bill's Academy of Television interview they ask him about Deidre and he says, "If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all." And he's dead serious. No jokes. You can cut the tension with a knife. I've always wondered what happened there!

I saw that too He got DH her job on Days in 1976 and she pretty much never thanked him and snubbed him over the years.

I also remember posts that DH did porn in the 60's when she started out and you can find the photos online. I have read the same thing about Victoria Principal from Dallas.

VP has also had some bizarre stuff written about her over the years. A few years ago she pulled a gun on her maid who stole from her. The feud with Joan Rivers, paying to go to the moon on a space flight, her messy relationship with Andy Gibb etc...

All I can recall about the Joan vs. Victoria feud is that Joan gave out Victoria's actual phone number on her short-lived talk show.  I THINK it was because Joan hated whatever skin care or exercise product that Victoria was pushing at the moment, but I can't be sure.

I feel like Hagman was loyal to Barbara Bel Geddes and therefore didn't appreciate the role of Miss Ellie being recast.  Was there more to it than that?

If I recall right, Joan also had some issues with Victoria's vanity (which, coming from Joan ...). I want to say Joan caught Victoria on air in a fib about her age. Victoria claimed to be born in 1950, but also said she was the first American baby born in Japan after the war.

Yes. Joan said that would have made Victoria born in 1945. There is an interview on youtube of Joan with Andy Gibb and she starts slamming VP's age and questioning Andy about it. Andy jokes that Vicki is still the same age she was when I met her.....LOL At one time people where going to Wikipedia correcting her birth year to 1945 and I think legal action was taken and her birth year was put at 1950.

VP always seemed to be an outsider in the cast. PD, LH, LG ,SK and CT are thick as thieves. VP never does reunions with them.

Well, VP did that "Return to Southfork" retrospective some years ago. I think that's the only reunion she participated in.

I also remember the uproar Y&R faced about 20 years ago with the Neil/Victoria potential pairing. Didn't Heather Tom get death threats and that's the main reason why the show dropped the pairing?

I remember that controversy too. I didn't know she received death threats. They quickly dropped the storyline.

Yes VP did do that one reunion, but that was it. She was asked in one interview who she was close to in the Dallas cast and she said Ken Kercheval and the late Jim Davis. One would assume she would say Patrick. Patrick did one interview that said Bobby's marriage to Pam was messed up.....LOL

I may have mixed up HT with Adrienne Frantz, who said she got death threats when Amber had the fling with the singer played by Usher on B&B

Yes, I remember reading articles from the day and soon after the passing of Jim Davis that they looked at each other as surrogate father and daughter. His own daughter had died young and supposedly somewhat resembled VP, so he took her under his wing.

I loved Ken Kercheval on the show!! To this day, I call him "the EMBITTERED Cliff Barnes"!!! 😊 😂

KK was a bit quirky that made the character of Cliff interesting and believable. JD seemed to be adored by all of the cast. The bloopers are hilarious, especially when he calls Miss Ellie the C word when she's leaving.......LOL Here is the interview with Joan and Andy where they trash Victoria Principal.

Oh yes, trying to get into any soap from scratch starting post-2010 would be hard. I prefer to go back to the good ol' days, before the decline.
    • Can we talk about how iconic the 1994 tornado was on AMC? I was scanning through old episodes last night and came across this episode. The tornado was epic and the storylines/aftermath were so good (Julia's scar/Noah!; Jenny/Ray/Nola/Jesse in heaven with Tad, etc).  For 1994, these special effects and budget for this big event were amazing. 10 out of 10!  The only thing missing is Erica!  I can't recall where Erica was at the time, but I really wish she had been involved in this storyline.

    • On the way to her own engagement party? I've read that the show had trouble getting the audience to sympathize with Rita, but...that seems bizarre. Maybe I can understand the issue with the censors, given that at the time, rape wasn't depicted the way it is now, and marital rape was even less acknowledged.  Wasn't Chris Brooks' rape one of the first honest stories on the subject? I just don't think I could get into a show I didn't have a working knowledge of. I know it's a different era, but I really tried to get into GH once Maura West joined, but it just never jelled.
    • Yes it was! My mom and I convinced my dad to get one. He was--how shall I put this?--on the thrifty side, but one day he came home with one as a surprise. To this day, I'm convinced it fell off a truck. (He knew people with "connections."

) BUT, we had our VCR and we could watch our soaps. That thing lasted forever! It was built like a tank. Even when we got new ones with more features, we kept that one.

Blasphemy!  (Haha, I get it.  But, you should try watching AMC! 80s-90s was so good.)
    • I thought about saying how I resented the fact that those two newbies were tripping up the Puppetmaster of all Puppetmasters, when the best others could do was a stalemate (or less...). But, well...*sigh*
    • I read years ago that both Zaslow and Lenore both complained that it came off as a seduction because of CBS censors, so Lenore asked if she could say, "you raped me" to leave no doubt with the audience, and that Zaslow insisted that Holly's rape played realistically
    • Wow it’s official, Gatwa is out… https://www.avclub.com/ncuti-gatwa-addresses-doctor-who-finale-statement DW fandom on Reddit is in a furor over how things went down and apparent last minute scrapping of the original ending. Also…Billie Piper again really?
    • He comes pretty close, talkin' about how Reva is full of love and joy, blah blah....which is bilge considering he was the one responsible for throwing her out of Josh's life over working with Alan.
    • Just watched the episode concerning Olivia's drug use and Abby's persistence, etc. Donna Mills did stellar work in this episode, as did Tonya Crowe and Brian Austin Green (Brian).
