I don't think anyone has denied that this has happened in the past, but what people then seem to forget to address is the power imbalance which caused this in the first place. And this only applies to Hollywood and the rest of the entertainment industry. What about all the women from other professions who have reported similar claims? I don't know how  it is in the US, but here we've had reports of sexual harassment and abuse from virtually every aspect of society. I'd like to see men try to justify that.

To start blaming women for these horrible stories by bringing up the casting couch system is something that I expected would happen, but I for one hope that this will not succeed and that the blame for this is put where it belongs, on the men. This is not simply a Hollywood problem, this is a problem permeating the whole society and it's time to deal with it, openly and honestly.

We've had massive problems here in recent years with women being sexually harassed and even raped right in the middle of a crowd on music festivals, and when one female artist, Zara Larsson, spoke out about this many men immediately tried to shift the focus by attacking her and calling her man-hater and other, non-printable words. Until we men, as a group, start to accept responsiblity for this behaviour, nothing is going to change. Naturally the majority of us men haven't done anything, but we still have a very important part to play. Now we must do our bit to ensure that this kind of behaviour is stopped, by speaking out against it, and calling out those men who have committed these crimes.

He isn't... nor am I... blaming women as a whole. It's blaming the men who do these things, and the women in the past who have been willing participants, not the women who are victims. Sorry, but women who are willing participants are NOT victims, and they have helped create this "monster" that the TRUE victims get caught up in. It's a vicious cycle, really. These men are emboldened by the sluts who sell themselves for roles, and then they think they are entitled to get away with it all the time as a matter of course. It needs to be stopped from both directions. Now the music festival thing... that's whole nother kettle of fish. The women aren't willing participants, so the blame is 100% at the feet of the men.

I get what you are trying to say. Do I believe that there are women out there who would lie about being harassed/assaulted (and have lied) to get money and attention? Do I believe that men out there have been falsely accused of harassing/assaulting women? Yes on both counts. Lying and greed isn't gender specific...and it makes things so much worse for people who really HAVE been victimized.

Fantastic words, I Am A Swede.  But, too bad they're being wasted on a race-baiting troll.

Thank you so very much, for judging me from your throne in your mother's basement... Kaiserian in all your beauty rare.

Bingo. It makes it so much more difficult for the true victims.

Mika and Joe have bent over backwards from the getgo to carry water for these men and to try to discredit these cases (I remember them implying before the AL election that Roy Moore would have lost but because of the allegations he would now win). They've always been dishonest, stupid and manipulative, and they get too much of a free pass just because Trump hates them. They are no better than he is and don't deserve the credit.

For much of this thread, the focus has been on the movie industry, namely Hollywood and the complicity within it toward sexual harassment and sexual assault.

Interestingly enough, this article talks about the very diminished Pakistani film industry and how one film has galvanized women to raise their voices to discuss issues like rape, social inequality and justice.  The film was un-banned after an outcry, especially from Pakistani women, who saw the film as culturally vital.

Why is anyone surprised that racism and misogyny were part and parcel of how Vice ran its organization?

Vice was who I thought they were all along.

Why did you think that?

Because a lot of people choose to focus on the Vice of very recent times that has reshaped its image forgetting how different it was from its earlier days when it was all about adopting a transgressive stance, especially in the content of what it highlighted--the name says it all.

As Vice expanded into the digital realm, it became even more embedded and wedded to digital culture and Silicon Valley-- well, nope, nothing misogynistic and racist about Silicon Valley, right:huh:? (*coughs Gamergate coughs*).

All I really knew about Vice was seeing some of its episodes on HBO, so I didn't suspect them. I also wasn't surprised.  At this point, the only thing that would surprise me is President Obama or Pope Francis being hit with credible allegations.  In the case of Pope Francis it would only be mild surprise.

Vice's foray into more mainstream reporting is a very recent thing, they've been around since the 90s.  Although I don't lump them in with the dotcoms, their internal structure is quite similar to many  companies that popped up during the dotcom era (years before the bubble burst) a very 'Wild West' mentality in how their internal structure (dys)functioned.

Lots of lines crossed with very little consideration for the consequences of those actions.

I mean, true, but that's from 2015...

Oh - I didn't notice that. I saw it when people were talking about recent allegations about Alternet.
