"The Conners" Discussion Thread

A little amazing The Conners finished a full second season pre-pandemic -  I have another seven episodes left! It’s lovely to get reacquainted with the show after several months, and of course it was already renewed for.... whenever.

The live episode about the February New Hampshire primary was great. Michael Fishman remains an uncomfortably hot adult. Lecy continues to get the best one-liners, re: Harris’ computer warranty: “She’ll just send it back where she bought it. She’ll mail it to ‘guy on offramp with old army jacket.’”

The big applause for Jackie commenting on Trump exposing the military via tweet and Becky mocking Putin was a surprise (and Lecy and Ames McNamara’s tickled reactions were cute). The kids surprisingly carried so much of the episode (even the “live from a studio audience” voice over); I wonder if McNamara has a theater background. The running joke about Mark supporting Buttigieg was cute. I did wonder if he broke when Emma Kenney (Harris) imitated him and the camera was behind him, I thought I heard him laughing. They’ve managed to make the Mark/Harris relationship three dimensional in its own right like Becky and Darlene, albeit very different. The new kids are coming into their own and they’re both strong actors now that the dialogue has gone beyond gags and platitudes. Kenney is tough but not a teen Darlene copy, and McNamara has the same sort of raw emotion and precise verbal articulation Lecy had as a kid and teen that always differentiated her from the rest of the family, though her Becky could be far more cruel back then. “I have no one to talk to now! I told Grandpa I had a boy crush and we ended up watching Spartacus and eating a bucket of fried chicken!”

Becky on Louise: “A woman in this town with that waistline and no meth problem?” It was nice to see all three kids get behind getting Dan to get Louise to stay and commit to her.

It was nice to see D.J. get a lot more to do.

D.J.: You’re gonna get Dad to tell Louise that he loves her in two days? He’s never even said that to me.

Becky: Take a hint and move on.

Jackie impersonating Hillary and the kids catching her was a hoot. And I liked the cast voting PSA at the end.

Becky: After voting we go to a pizza place and have an embarrassing public fight about how we voted!

Darlene: But you cant make people feel stupid about their vote, unless you vote.

This show and other good sitcoms (like ODAAT, or my recurring Cheers binge on Netflix) are a real steady comfort in this time, just like classic soaps have been. I hope others will catch up too (hint hint @DRW50) I also need to catch the Parks and Rec and 30 Rock pandemic specials...

Wow, they're back! Guess I need to finish the last episodes of Season 2. It really is good.

Wild to see the entire family in COVID masks. LOL at Mark doing a temp check on Dan.

I haven't seen the first two episodes yet. I died watching the promo for the first episode where Jackie mentioned her boss looked like George Clooney and she should have rode it till it broke, or something like that. DEAD.

I'm kinda OK with Jerry not existing (remember how Jerry was originally a girl? lol). I am a bit salty Jackie's son Andy was forgotten though (is he still?).

    • -- Laura to Sonny: "I will always love and respect you." GAG ME. This stuff doesn't lead me to respect Sonny more, but to respecting Laura less. -- Carly being brought into the Gio/Brook Lynn story by Lulu. GAG ME. Why does Carly have to be a part of every damn story on this show?
    • This episode was probably the most we've ever seen of Jan.. and it took long enough. The phone conversation between Jan/Ashley also shed light on their backstory.. and I think it explains why Ashley seems to live in a dreamworld and why she's having difficulties with living with Derek.  Derek could be doing everything right and Ashley would still have a problem because she was an only child, didn't see her mother model positive male/female interactions, and sounds as if she was alone a lot of the time. Nicole is modeling healthy human behavior and she would be smart not to listen to Dani's advice... well intentioned as it is. Eva is the character you root for because she's suffering the consequences of her actions.  And if I were Eva, I wouldn't want to be part of the Dupree world.   I'm hoping the Doug/Joey scenes today is signaling that we're finally moving to the next stage of this story... Doug either asking Vanessa for the money, or letting Joey have dibs on Vanessa's business books, etc.   And Joey finally showing his true colors makes me think we might be approaching that next stage of this story.
    • Lord have mercy!!! Not SilkPress vs Eva at Oprhany Gene for everyone to see!!!! Though I loved Vernon shading SilkPress. I continue to love all this fallout.   Is THAT Joey's endgame?
    • WAIT!!?  You don't want to know CM's workout secrets?  And a recap of his insta feed?  What's wrong with you?   Anyhow, today's show had good character moments.  I feel like Sonny/Laura brought it down.  I really like Tracey and Jason scenes so I think I am a weirdo.  Carly/Lulu were actually pretty good as well, but Carly's dress was some sort of bondage/leather type situation?  It was a strange wardrobe choice lol.
    • Oh God When are we gonna see this on BTG?
    • Yeah, I don't really love Felicity being used to push the Chad/Cat agenda.  I don't get the question on Xander's behavior either.  He was wrong and offensive. I like Xander.  I think Paul Telfer is great.  If Marlena did the same thing I would say she's wrong too.  Characters are imperfect and that's fine.
    • Vanessa told Joey that her best friend had cheated and has a surprise daughter.  Joey said the same had happened to him.  I wasn't sure if Joey was saying he has an adult out-of-wedlock child?
    • Interesting. I definitely think that it's possible that Jan could be a former lover of Joey's from back in the day, maybe back when he was still married. I won't be surprised if it comes out at some point that Jan used to be an escort or something.
    • Quick question, How are you guys making time to watch all these soaps? I consider myself a pretty organized person, but since I have committed to watching more of the older soaps. I feel all over the place, and can not figure out a schedule that seems to work.  How are you all doing it?   Thanks. I will check that out.
    • Oh, poor Henry had to wait for the grave to finally come "out"! The whole things was McTavish plot dictated so that Hart could have money to pull off his scam of Roger later. The fortune is totally forgotten later. Which reminds me WHY did they fire Hilliard who actually could kinda pass for a midwestern farm boy..from JOISEY Grillo? AM and Lucy's wedding has got to be the weirdest wedding up to that point and really exemplified the McLaiby cheesy run. Universal Studios? And the Spauldings shut the place down for the wedding that only involves 6 people??? Its not even that weird that Bridget and David arent there...they didn't even invite AM's Mom or Grandfather...
