They are going through with the sequel series.

Description:

Cruel Intentions picks up over 15 years after the hit movie left off. It follows the beautiful and cunning Kathryn Merteuil as she vies for control of Valmont International as well as the soul of Bash Casey, the son of her brother, who was the late Sebastian Valmont, and Annette Hargrove. Upon discovering his late father’s legacy in a hidden journal, Bash is introduced to a world of sex, money, power and corruption he never could have imagined.

Producers are also apparently talking to Sarah Michelle Gellar to reprise her role as Kathryn

I'm all for this, especially if they can get Sarah Michelle on board. NBC needs a good strong soap badly, but I echo the sentiments that I'm not confident they are the right network to pull it off. I like the idea of using some continuity with the movie and having Sarah Michelle on. If it's a hit, I'm sure they could get Reese for an episode or two.

On another note, I will say, it's crazy that of all her projects this is getting a sequel series and not Buffy. I'm beyond shocked a Buffy sequel series hasn't been made with Sarah Michelle or even a straight reboot, but in the age of sequel series, you can't convince me a new Buffy on Netflix OR Network TV wouldn't be a huge hit. Genre tv is in.

The cast had a lot of issues with each other and most of them haven't been desperate enough career-wise to need a reunion. I'm also not sure Whedon would want to do it.

As for this - well it's on NBC so, as mentioned above, I can't see how it would be any good. We'll see. I'd be half-surprised if they couldn't get Ryan Phillippe back as well.

Whendon is probably the biggest hold up, he just did two huge Avenger films and is probably burnt out from that.

Alyson Hannigan just wrapped up How I Met Your Mother. The only one not doing anything is Nicholas Brennan. I am sure Charisma Carpenter and James Marsters would probably be apart of it. But I think Willow, Angel, Buffy are the big hold ups.

All that said I love the premise of this idea! I wish Ryan Phillippe would be apart of this! Him and SMG were the best part of Cruel Intentions. I never cared for Reese Witherspoon at all. I would be all for Sebastian and Kathryn screwing around with each other in an older business orientated setting. I could careless about this new Bash character though. All they really need in my opinion is Kathryn and Sebastian and some corporate style espionage to make this interesting. Maybe throw in some older veteran actors to round out the step family and it would make things more interesting. But the work is already there.

I don't think they want to cross Whedon on BTVS. And I think they're smart not to. Plus a lot of the cast either hates each other, is completely disinterested or is Nicholas Brendon, who is an absolute wreck these days. (Charisma Carpenter also may still have bad blood with Whedon.) I think they need to let it lie for a long time.

This, OTOH, smacks of desperation. For both parties, if SMG takes the job. CI wasn't very good even back in the day, but it had hype and style and two then-huge teen stars on its side.

I almost disowned you after this comment. No matter how many classic films and modern masterpieces I fall in love with, Cruel Intentions will always hold a special place in my heart. It is, with no irony, one of the best young adult films of all time. Please, don't hurt me more than you already have.

    • I do agree that I wish there was more gay representation in terms of singles. I also had hoped we'd get a Black couple since it was a Black soap and I don't know that we've ever seen that on a US soap.  With that said, it's still early days so I can imagine we'll get that at some point. I am impressed they launched with as much LGBT representation considering how US soaps can be.
    • Thank you. I know we're all supposed to see that BTG is progressive when it comes to queer characters, but it's telling that they won't commit to showcasing gay or bi males who are single and looking. That relationship couldn't be any more traditional. Will we ever get a bedroom scene with Smitty and Martin? I have my doubts.
    • This is a pretty huge thing IMO, but I guess we will see what happens? Can't get any worse then already.
    • This can be difficult for a soap to depict. So far she's only shown an interest in women. Will a man come into her life? If she commits to a male, there will be  backlash, but if it's women only, them where is the bi/queer aspect? Personally, I would have liked a single gay male on the show dealing with hook ups/relationships etc. Smitty/Martin married with kids is limiting in those terms.
    • Of course, how could I have forgotten those thrilling episodes depicting the fire? Also we had the GCAC rooftop set that came out every Summer. Moving on to Friday's episode. Victor is propped in his chair, answers his cell and tells the caller 'Let him in'. Seconds later Kyle enters. So does Victor have security on the front porch? It would have been better had Victor taken the call, and then said to himself 'Well Kyle, let's see what you have to say'and fade out. Next scene Kyle enters, indicating that the first call was from the Ranch entrance and time had passed . Nit picky but I get frustrated when they do stuff like that.

    • I don't think Chelsea has a true label just yet. She's just finding out she has an interest in women. I think the awkwardness is aligned with the character as we've seen. This is the fool who keeps filming her family when embarrassing things happen and live streaming it. I actually think it's refreshing she isn't just jumping into a relationship  and that they're playing the beats of her trying to figure out who she is.
    • Wow, do I agree with you. Chelsea is coming off as ridiculous. All she does is look for a woman to date while not caring about her business at all. That she's bi is great, but they're not writing her like she's bi. She seems to be lesbian. Yeah, I know -- "no labels." I just don't find the writing for her story to be anything other than awkward.   -- I hope we get some diagnosis finality with Bill's trip to the hospital. I don't want to see these trips to the ER every other day. -- Naomi is going to blame herself for Bill's health problems? GMAB. -- Ashley doesn't read as a real nurse in the slightest. -- Another day, another rinse and repeat conversation with Derek and Ashley. YAWN. -- Kat is making mistakes, but she's fun to watch and listen to, regardless. -- I still think the Joey/Vanessa/Doug gambling story sucks. I know Doug is deeply in debt, but I don't like him acting this meek and submissive.  -- I'm not sure what Joey's plan was from the beginning, or why he had to seduce Vanessa at all to get his way. I'm not sure what Vanessa ever saw in Joey -- why doesn't he give her the ick? -- I'm fine with a story where Doug and Vanessa take out Joey.  -- The fades to commercials were pretty bad today.
