On November 5, the mother of Nathaniel Marston (ex-Al/Michael, OLTL; ex-Eddie, ATWT), who was injured in a horrific car crash on October 30, updated fans on his condition. "Thank you so much for your continued support, prayers ,positive thoughts and words," she wrote. "Today was a rough day for both me and Nathaniel. His heart stopped twice today once at 3 AM and once at 10:30 AM this morning. Dr.'s are going to install a pacemaker to help regulate his heartbeat so it is more consistent. For now an external pacemaker has been placed on his chest and it is helping." She added, "Dr. shared with me that the most likely prognosis is that Nathaniel will live out his life as a quadriplegic. Before I listened to her and lost all hope for Nathaniel's recovery I remembered that this Dr. does not know Nathaniel and that she does not know the power of our Father God, who can and will make recovery possible." His former OLTL leading lady, Kathy Brier (ex-Marcie), announced on Facebook that she is working to produce a benefit concert in March, "with all money raised going towards Nate's Go Fund Me Page," which has been set up to help defray the considerable costs of his recovery. I expected this and it appears to be true. Very sad.

That poor woman.   I always enjoyed Marston. He wasn't a typical "soap" leading man, he had his troubles, but at the end of the day, I thought he deserved better than the way OLTL treated him. So tragic.  My thoughts are with his family...

I think OLTL gave him every chance and then some. He was very candid and honest about it in Llanview in the Afternoon.

He was not my optimal Al, but he was wonderful paired with Kathy Brier. And Al's final storyline, while a mistake IMO, has at least one incredible key sequence that's still burned in my memory. Whatever my feelings about his tenure on the show, he was by many accounts an incredibly kind-hearted guy who was beloved by the cast and crew and his death is a terrible tragedy.

Thanks for posting that in the OLTL thread. For me, the scene where Marcie sings at Al's funeral is one I've watched about a million times and never fails to gut punch me. If I watch it now, I'll be a mess. His mother is a warrior for taking the time to inform his fans of his situation.

It's difficult to divorce myself from the tragedy of the current moment and talk about soap story criticism without feeling like even more of a prick than I already am, but I will say I thought they went to the Kathy Brier singing power ballads well a few times too many (and often back to back) in that first year or two with that storyline and subsequent ones. So to me, her belting out "Iris" at the funeral a few days later was kind of gilding the lily - but it was still great.

For me, though, when I think of him and them, it's the "This Year's Love" montage. I credit Josh Griffith's musical influence for a lot of that. Frank Valentini utilized it too but his latter-day stuff is never as good. I'm actually gonna replace the link with a better quality one.

Just awful news. He had a really engaging, charming screen presence, and no family should have to go through what his family has just been through.
