Week ending 3/27/1987.

B&B’s premiere week. ATWT moved back half an hour to 2 pm to compete head to head with OLTL and AW. OLTL had Viki going to heaven for 2 weeks and bringing back many former actors. ATWT’s big shocker was marrying John and Lucinda. AW had Crystal Gayle as a guest star.

We interrupt our regularly scheduled ratings because of the Iran- Conta hearings. Ironic that we are going through the exact same thing now with our soaps being interrupted.

The week of 7/6 to 7/10/1987 has to be taken with a grain of salt because Y&R aired only on Monday that week and there were massive pre emptions. AMC, DOOL,LOV and RH had the least pre-emptions.

ATWT had some great stuff.....Lily finding out Iva was her mother and not Lucinda and that Josh was her father and he had raped Iva. Craig was missing. Margo and Hal slept together creating Adam. Meg and Tonio got married.

I think at this time Gregg Marx had left as Tom and Scott Holmes was about to make his debut as Tom.

B&B and GL were stinking up the place in June and most of July. B&B even dropped to 9th and was beaten by AW

Wow May and June 87 are interesting. In May AMC is gaining which I guess wreaked havoc for Y&R, especially with a stronger OLTL. What was happening on AMC to get it to a shared #1 at the end of May only for it drop again in June? Y&R is then suddenly #1 for most of June. The ratings were a lot more interesting back then.

This seems to back up Brenda Dickson's claim that Y&R was #1 when she left

I do wonder if ABC ever wondered why or were dumbfounded why AMC wasn't able to succeed GH as the #1 rated soap when the later started to run of of steam in the late 80's.

Looking at these ratings, it seems Y&R's #1 status was becoming inevitable, even if other soaps were sometimes nipping at its heels. They really held up throughout the 80's and cut right through the ABC dominance, to the point where they would topple GH completely by the end of the decade.

1987-1989 Y&R was in a bit of a transition. There was the EP change from H. Wesley Kenney to Ed Scott, and three major cast departures (Brenda Dickson, Eileen Davidson, Terry Lester). While all this was happening off screen, Cricket was eating the show onscreen. Yet Y&R still managed to reach #1 and stay there until today.

Having The Price is Right as it's lead in probably played a big part in Y&R's rise to and staying at #1. Bob Barker once said about TPiR being the lead-in for Y&R that "without us Young and Restless would be Old and Lethargic".

    • She could have easily tied them into the Cottage Mystery...(they could have easily explained going on adventures with Bea, babysitting) The house that Tony and Annabelle lived in could have been the coachhouse of the property that Qualo and Henry live in, or at the very least Nola would have been totally in on ghosts and secrets of her brother's house. But they kind of just sat around for months.  The clip of Van and Billy's impromptu wedding shows how sidelined Nola and Quint became...Nola isn't even around butting in on them getting married, its all Reva (though it is a more interesting Reva where Mindy and her or going at it and insulting each other..THAT Reva was fun.)  I loved it when those two would go at it. Somehow they could have resurrected that antogonistic relationship and not have Billy worshing at the throne of Reva.  When they brought JC back on recurring they should have had him at least warn Annie about Jeva pulling her down..."Darlin' I love my brother, but when he has ole Reva in his sites he will drop any woman to try to win her back...and then he will get bored with her...she's like booze is to me and you...he hates it but he needs it..get out while you can!"
    • It's been brought up that Empty Nest was a time slot hit. Here's Empty Nest schedule and seasonal rating in comparison to The Golden Girls. 1988/89: The Golden Girls Saturday 9 pm, 6th. Empty Nest Saturday 9:30 pm, 9th. 1989/90: The Golden Girls Saturday 9 pm, 6th. Empty Nest Saturday 9:30 pm, 9th. 1990/91: The Golden Girls Saturday 9 pm, 10th. Empty Nest Saturday 9:30 pm, 7th. 1991/92: The Golden Girls Saturday 8 pm, 30th (final season). Empty Nest Saturday 9 pm, 22nd.  1992/93: Saturday 9 pm, below the Top 30. 1993/94: Saturday 9 pm, below the Top 30. 1994/95: Saturday 8:30 pm then 8 pm, below the Top 30, and cancelled. Empty Nest 7 season run equaled the parent show The Golden Girls.
    • In an interesting turn of irony, when Somerset came onto the airwaves in 1970... it ran against Dark Shadows and beat it in the ratings fairly quickly.  Then when Edge of Night moves to ABC in December 1975 and put against Somerset, the slow ratings rise that Somerset was allegedly having in late 1975 is derailed. From reading the write ups of the final year, the show dropped the May/December romance.. which viewers enjoyed and was getting the show some good press... the original cast member was sidelined due to medical issues, and the show featured pure crime stories without any balance. I think the crime focus was an attempt to compete with EON.  However, people that were into crime stories/mysteries weren't going to tune into Somerset for their fix.. not when Edge of Night was known for that.. and that show was running on a high quality wise when the network switch occurred.

    • Erwin Nicholson's last episode as SFT ep was 11/21. Whitesell started 11/22/85. Erwin was on board from March 8, 1985 so less than 9 months. Whitesell lasts six months (approximately) before P&G moved him to AW for two years where he primarily worked with DePriest. Whitesell was replaced on Search by no daytime experience David Lawrence who closed out the show's last six months.

(IG post link)  It's a batch of photos. Y&R posted same photos on facebook  (fb post link) Y&R did a youtube with individual messages from their cast: Heartfelt and fun from Peter Bergman, Beth Maitland, Eileen Davidson, Tracey Bregman, Joshua Morrow, and Eric Braeden. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdFxgA7gPcY Stephanie Sloane interviewed Diamont for tvinsider/tvguide. This interview includes his time at DAYS. Short version of interview was in TVGuide print magazine earlier in May. • I assume in name only?  One Stormy Night wasn't exactly steamy.  If it's a literal throwback then Stephanie's writing about sexy times her own Uncle was having lol. Since I am going to surmise it's just a throwback to the name, Night Sins and Winter Heat both sound sexier.  Just saying.  I swear Jamey (and Ron) just google things and land on the first thing they like and decide it's a good throwback to history without watching it.
    • I usually don't want Tide placement in the middle of an intense sad scene, but this is an interesting point
