I agree. Keep 'em coming!

It amazes me how much shows vary from week to week and month to month back then. I know I used to follow ratings back then, but it must have been such a norm that I never really noticed. Man, I wish there were that many shows and that much competition still today! The quality would have to improve for sure. Now networks just don't care.

Like I said, I am learning so much from these ratings.  For instance, you could look back and pinpoint almost exactly when the wheels on the Kobe/Long era of GL began to fall off.

True story here. In early 1986, I was not enjoying GL. I wrote to Gail Kobe and told her that I was not enjoying the show.  I received a letter back from her that I thought was kind of harsh. She said that my letter was unfocused so she couldn’t take it seriously. Maybe my letter was unfocused, I truly don’t remember what I said in it, I just remember that ratings were falling and I didn’t enjoy the show anymore. A few weeks later she was fired and I remember being happy about it. To me, it was justification that others (her bosses) were unhappy with her work. I wasn’t the only one.

Great to see AW have a couple of 6's. I wonder what was going on the week of 7/11/86 to cause a 6.3? Isn't '86 when Tom Eplin, Ellen Wheeler, Stephen Schnetzer, Julie Osburn, Anna Stuart, and Sharon Gabet all left. I remember being devastated at the time. I loved Cass and Kathleen!

        @Contessa Donatella
    • One of the dumbest situations (Lando) ever. What audience member is going to invest in a storyline with a recast they don't like and a triangle where one character is short-term? It bombed as it should have done. So much of JFP's tenure just reeks of desperation. I don't get how someone could produce SB (which did have flaws but was often brilliant) but make so many terrible mistakes at GL.   I still think JFP would have worked better as a director and music supervisor. Her music work at SB was top notch.

        Article (not that you'd want to read it, just proof that it unfortunately exists) https://www.nytimes.com/2025/05/01/style/trump-style-100-days.html non-paywall copy: https://archive.is/ICe7U
    • We see the same with GH, where Mark Teschner, the casting director, reportedly has less say since Frank Valentini took over. Some producers want to take over every aspect of their shows.  I think Lando may have been a CBS push.
    • No idea but she won Emmys & she was the Casting Director at the same time for both ATWT & GL. She hired Lisa Brown with no job for her. Then Marland made Brown his muse so he created both Iva & Nola for her. But, I think we know that Jill does what Jill wants.
    • I did notice a decline in the quality of the performers being cast once Betty R vacated/retired from her position. We would have been spared from the nightmares of some of the castings that dominated the show in the last decade or so of the soap. JFP was an example of someone, no matter the gender, who had no business being in the position they were in.
    • If Betty Rea was the casting director, why was so much of GL during JFP's reign cast by her? Walker, Deas, Crampton, Lando, etc. JFP takes credit for Dusay as well. What is the point of having a casting director, if you don't let her do her job? What happened when Rea left?
    • So much on here slips my mind but this is the first I remember hearing of Peterson's passing. Very sad. Nell was a thankless role, clearly set up for a cheating storyline with Frank, but Peterson did her best.  Betty Rea Rea was the casting director for the soap opera “Guiding Light” from 1970 to 1996 and simultaneously the casting director for “As the World Turns” from 1979 to 1983.
    • Sorry, just one more post on the Thorntons. How did Ruth and Edna feel about each other prior to Tad dating Dotty?
    • I can't remember exactly but I think it may be 1995 as Jake was trying to hide from a loan shark.
