OLTL: SoapNET Marathon On New Years Day

They really weren't even attempting to give her texture until they decided to do the rape story. They did a good job in making her less vile in the 1-3 months before the rape. Her bonding with Jessica and Viki and going into the characters backstory more.

Maybe I was easily influenced as a 12-13 year old, but the character mainpulation right before the rape did make me root for her. I thought Marty was just shallow nasty before that and couldn't stand her. I didn't love to hate her - I just hated her. I didn't begin disliking her again until 1995. They made her way, way too sappy from then on until she went nuts last year I guess.

I didnt start to like Marty till CC tookover. I almost saw her as a different character which made liking her easier. When SH returned, I thought her return story made her very sympathetic and you couldnt help but feel sorry and root for Marty

well she was a one trick pony. There were no longterm plans for her and she was only supposed to last one story but TPTB liked SH's work and developed her more and kept her on

4 more episodes left of the 90s material. After 6pm, I dont really care if I miss the episodes or not as the stuff from the last 10 years doestn interest me much. This is when OLTL started going downhill

I was a soap magazine virgin around this time and a kid, but it was obvious to me even with those qualifications. She was clearly there to replace the character mold of Megan on the canvas. That backfires a lot especially when you write a character that one-note in their nastiness to start with.

Soaps used to be so damn good. The picture quality isn't as good as now with Hi-Def but everything else was just perfect.

Sigh. That opening and closing music and visuals - it brings back memories.

    • Thanks!   Was anyone watching during this time? Wondering how Peggy’s rape played out onscreen. It just seems cruel to subject the Brooks family to this trauma a 2nd time.   Feels like the writers have already given up on the character of Jennifer, even though she sticks around another year-plus. She should be a passionate and fierce protective mother, but instead she seems just reactionary (and not even mentioned in this recap) This was also the case in ‘73 when Chris was raped. The writers are definitely more invested Stuart as the Brooks parent.
    • BTG got another SNL reference at 00:50  CONTEXT (so it isn't misconstrued) in this joke swap segment, Michael Che frequently makes his white cohost Colin Jost read racist jokes written by Che.

    • It's obvious that Israel's presence is a major divisive issue, and this is something that the EBU needs to deal with. According to the now published results Israel got 13 out of a possible 19 max points in the semi-final, and while their song isn't bad there's no way they would get those numbers without some kind of manipulation/political voting. They are clearly using this contest as a way of improving their somewhat tarnished reputation. I know that some people are comparing this to the massive sympathy votes that Ukraine gets and which propelled them to victory in 2022, but I feel that that was a more genuine show of support than this concerted effort from Israel to influence the televoting. I even had an ad on Youtube from Israel in Swedish(!) asking for votes! It might not be against any rules, but it feels a bit icky nonetheless.
    • Yeah, as you wrote, an Israeli win would have been a political disaster. Congratulations to Austria. 0 points from the televoting to Switzerland was a disgrace. Other than that, I really enjoyed the show ... but I'm also glad that Eurovision season is over

    • Hahaha Sorry if I was too negative, I just started typing and typing once I got going hahaha
    • @dc11786 Thanks for taking time to answer my various questions, along with giving your thoughts on the different writing teams. I wonder why they didn't just have Ryder and TR leave together if Jane was going anyway. The discussions over the last few pages have made me more interested in watching these episodes than I have been over the years - without the extra details and analyses provided, these years can be difficult to decipher (not helped by how often Jo seems like a side character).
    • I didn't think this was very good (I've never yet seen a good episode of this revival), but you do get a lot of Michael Stroka. And if you are a Donna Reed Show fan, you also get Paul Petersen.

    • A very rare, fascinating look at camera blocking in a 1980 episode. Very loose, almost startlingly so (who expects to see Will Vernon with a cig dangling out of his mouth?). @vetsoapfan There's some Jacquie Courtney content in the back half of the video.
