But do soap sell technology? No, they sell detergent, cake mix, hair color and tooth paste.

1) They sell lots of things, but okay.

2) Again, consumers, young and old, aren't as married to certain brands as advertisers believe they are. Most everyone is willing to try whatever's new and different, regardless of age.

With the economy the way it is people are probably more willing to try something new (if it's cheaper) than ever. I think that buying habits have changed a lot, but Wall Street is always stuck in the past.

The point is the argument in terms of demos has been going on for years and is not exclusive to soaps. I get the feeling(maybe I am wrong) that folks feel daytime soaps are the only audience victim to this. Fact is there have been studies done indicating that people over 50, especially women, watch more TV than younger viewers. Advertisers are not going to pay a premium for an audience that statistically is the easiest to reach. espn has the highest ad rates out there because the majority watching are men and then men under 50. Men, especially 18-34, is generally considered the hardest to reach.

No disrespect Khan, but if that were true I think advertisers would know it. It's not true just because people want to believe it. There is a lot of painstaking research that goes into figuring out how to make people spend as much money as possible and who is easiest to influence. Is it ageist for me to believe that I was more easily influenced at 12 or even 18 than I am now? If so, I'm ageist and a realist too.

Not only did ABC manage to get some money by canceling the shows and selling the rights, they also managed to unload the sets and wardrobe. I wonder what PP is going to do with the stuff they bought. That could be one hell of an E-bay auction. Otherwise they are the permanent owners of Frankie Hubbard's scrubs, LaKane's myriad one-shoulder dresses and John McBain's leather jacket. It's the thrift store from hell. laugh.png

All that stuff can be sold and/or leased out and re-purposed. Especially in Los Angeles.

I guess ultimately it doesn't really matter what any of us believe about advertising. All that matters is what the people who pay the bills believe and what ABC believes. ABC seems to think they can reach an audience the advertisers want by giving viewers "The Chew", so that's what "we" get. I'll be opting out. Thank god for DVRs and cable drama.

Advertiser know exactly what they are doing to believe otherwise is just fooling yourself. There is a reason why certain ads air at certain times of the day, or on certain programs. These people study buying habits for a living.

They also know which demo is the hardest to reach therefore the most coveted and it is not the over 50, it has nothing to do with buying power and everything to do with trying to reach potential buyers. Do you people watch commercials all I know is that my 12 yo niece wants to by a Fiat the J-Lo Gucci car.

I see your point, but what people may want and what they can actually get are probably further apart than they have been in a long time. Even if they can get their ads across to a younger audience I don't know if the money is there to buy.

I work for Fiat & we all cringe so bad when those commercials are brought up (becaus they ate really bad) but it is excellent exposure of a brand that 1-2 years ago didn't even exist in the States.

My paycheck thanks J LO & her constant jumping on the hood in her high heels.

I think that the J-Lo/Fiat ads are great. They actually made me stop and look at a couple Fiats that were in the mall last week. I even saw a couple in the resident lot at a university. I think that they are appealing to a younger demographic and would not be surprise if they sell as a result.

Overall, I think that well done commercials are effective at making people take a second look and even try a product for the first time. It certainly does with me with some products.

Even better, since PP still has the rights to AMC, is there any chance they can eventually make one more final episode based on what Agnes & Lorraine had planned? If no network wanted to air it, they could always show it on their website and sell it as a DVD.

How can they? They have NO money, none, if they had some then this thread wouldn't exist ;)

I like the ads also they are not bad at all imo, they are catchy and they do make me take a second look. I never would have known anything about the car if not for the commercial, I don't know if it will help sales but it sure has made me take a second look at the Fiat.

They can't afford to get the soaps on now, but they're still launching their site in January, which means they have SOME money. I was hoping to hear from someone with insider knowledge on whether or not PP cares enough to try to give both shows a real ending.
