Hot in Cleveland was almost completely cuz of Lucci (Before they even knew about the crossover potential the joke was always that Susan got the Emmy over whoever plays the ex soap actress on Cleveland), MEK was featured heavily too but he's a somewhat known figure--and especially would be toHiC's core audience (the way the Buchanen men were when Roseanne fantasized about them). Castle I think Frons may have played some part but it is true the show is filmed in LA, and Rebecca was just on that skating show (not that anyone seemed to watch that). Dancing with the Stars, I would argue too that Lucci was a natural choice who they probably wanted from the start, Aiden Turner I have no clue about, Brott has his whole backstory, and Cam M prob had as much to do with his role on GMA and other talk/news shows.

Obviously ABC should have had an OLTL person promoted on Dancing as well, but I'm not sure who they would have. Would Michael Easton have done it? I kinda doubt Erika or even Robin would... This is all silly argument of course, but I think at least some of it can be fairly rationally justified from the perspective of those shows.

Regarding FV supervising both shows, I've always wondered if he really has any strong interest in the tone or style of the show or not. Malone II, Higley, and RC are very different in style and tone (the only common thread is offputting views on rape/abuse).

Yeah, he seems to get along well with his various writers--and has more vision for the show (for good and bad) then I see from JHC at AMC, but, I think you have a fair point. There is gossip about his obsession with auditioning guys in their underwear, etc, or whatever--some of that I think is stigma for the fact he's openly gay--and it's true that screentests, though not auditions, usually at least involve the guys taking their shirts off, but I do get a sense some of that is from him and not just RC.

I'm not sure what people are expecting as part of this brand new day for OLTL. Do they think that now Erika Slezak will co-host The View or that the next time a show like Castle asks for a soap star, they'll get KDP. As for DWTS, let's be honest, other than SuLu the soap stars on there are filler. (I say that as somebody who is tuning in for the first time for JRM.) I don't know what's really going to be different in the real world. It's not like OLTL is going to become some kind of media sensation. I suppose it could happen on Bravo but does anyone think OLTL is going to supplant the Real Housewives? What's basically happened is that AMC without Lucci is just as obscure as OLTL. Yay for equality?

Would the red-headed stepchild thing go away if Michael Easton did DWTS? (In the name of all that's holy, please don't let that happen!) Would OLTL finally be vidicated?

If Castle needed someone to play a male corpse ME would fit perfectly. He did play a vampire at one time.

And I don't get why the Hot in Cleveland thing is brought up. Luccis name had been mentioned on the show long before she was ever slated to appear as one of the characters is an out of work soap actress.

The simplest explanation for that is that it was just logistics. AMC and Castle tape in LA. If AMC had still been taping in NY, then the gig would've gone to someone on GH, It had nothing to do with some grand conspiracy to keep OLTL down. And honestly most of the people who watch Castle had no idea who RB and CM were.

I don't think it'll ever go away. I even see some of the trumping (i'm gonna regret this...) of fans going on about OLTL's ratings right now is because they see it as some sort of vindication.

I still laugh when I think of the ending for OLTL someone on here once suggested, with Agnes Nixon coming on screen, closing some dinky little paperback scrapbook with One Life to Live scrawled on the front, and saying "You are ALL my red-headed step children" as she closes the book.

AFAIC, Frank signing is good news. He is responsible for making that show lean, mean and tough production-wise. We always hear these little stories fans balloon into giant conspiracies, and maybe his management style is a little Machiavellian at times, but invariably the actors always come out of it gushing about him for some reason, no matter how much their fanbase hates him. Ask yourself why, then remember that he had to be EP of ABC's least valued soap, not prom queen. He did it well and I think he'll continue to do so. I wanted him onboard as EP - HW I'd rather we get someone new.

He is a gay exec, but I've never heard any real stories about him going all Paul Rauch on the male talent - just bitchy little comments that people think are the soul of wit whenever you have gay personnel on a soap opera. He's gay therefore all the men are constantly shirtless - just like on every other soap opera.

    • I'm not that impressed with the costuming, still very hit and miss, not much improvement and some of the outfits for Nikki in particular have been awful. Maybe Mariah's secret is she encountered Ian and killed him? That might work except for the fact that her mother has done the same thing.
    • Ana Alicia was far more dynamic and charismatic than McGeehan or Vernon though. Some of it due to the writing of course, but not all of it.
    • It actually felt like TM-G was a bit softer in her scenes with nu-Ted that kind of matched his meeker energy as Ted on Friday. I was very curious how she’d play off him and now I have my answer.
    • My thoughts exactly! Fantastic find @DRW50!
    • That was interesting; thanks. Courtney looks tired and/or bored AF, LOL!
    • 5-12   Lord have mercy.   I'm not sure how I feel about it. Perhaps what I said last week or the week before last. If the highlight of a soap is what people are wearing and not the writing, that's not a good thing. And that was how I was feeling watching this. There was not anyone that I was interested in seeing in the episode outside of Daniel and Sally tbh. Because Daniel continues to be the only thing that humanizes Phyllis for me.    I could care less for the Billy/Sally scenes where he's woe is me. I could care less about Kyle/Claire since the writers took all the drama right out of the pairing. Humanized or not, I could care less for Giggly Heffa.    I barely care for Teriah. But for me, it's nice to see something going on with them. Though it seems so horribly contrived.    I liked the costume designer appears to be trying to find individual styles for some of the characters. For me, Tessa's with the boots stood out given her indie musician history. It seems like Claire's style is coming into its own with block colors. I like Kyle's wardrobe is loosening up somewhat. I even loved the striped dress that Phyllis had on.    But again...where is the writing?
    • It was reported that Jane Wyman absence in the final season was due to health (it's documented that Jane was diabetic) but I believe her episodes being cut was a budget mode move. Similar move Dallas pulled in 1990, it was reported that Barbara Bel Geddes retired due to health (it's documented that Barbara had a heart condition) but I say salary dump. Jane Wyman only acted once after Falcon Crest, a 1993 episode of Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, but she lived another 14 years after that. Barbara Bel Geddes did not act again after her last episode of Dallas in 1990 but she lived another 15 years after that. The trifecta of suck at Lorimar was Les Moonves, Leonard Katzman, and Michael Filerman. It was a pattern across all three CBS primetime soaps in the off the rails plus budget mode era to salary dump the long-time female cast members and bring on sweet young things hired on the cheap.
    • To be fair, more than half of them are dead now.
    • Kat may be a privileged elitist but that's not entirely true.  Kat first met Eva when Eva was snooping at Nicole's desk, so Kat's first impression of Eva wasn't very good.  Plus, Kat's instinct to not trust Eva was 100% right.  Kat's attitude toward Eva had nothing to do with Eva not "bowing" down to Kat, and her feelings toward her half-sister is very justified......minus the making fun of Eva's clothes of course.
    • They said that this has metastasized to his bones, but the type of "aggressive" prostate cancer he has is actually very common and is treatable, or at least manageable. So the headline is misleading.   Apparently this type of cancer is hormonal which makes it somewhat treatable? But still, of course, sad.  Thinking of him and his loved ones.
