I think of it this way, when LB took over, she thought she was just becoming HW, she didn't know she was going to be writing the end. I really doubt Frons gave her the consideration of telling her the show was cancelled when he promoted her. So I think(and hope) things will improve int the coming weeks when she actually did start writing like the show was going to be ending and not continuing

The best thing about a finale for McTavish's writing is that it would actually be over.
