All: Each show's Definitive Couples

I don't agree. If you say Tad and Dixie to random people on the street, most won't know what you're talking about. But like Luke and Laura will always make people say GH, whether or not they ever watched, Greg and Jenny will always make people say AMC, for the same reason. No other soap couple in TV history ever got more mainstream press coverage other than Luke and Laura.

I liked Erica with Dimitri but I think more may remember her with Jack.

I would also say Erica/Mike Roy.

I also have to add Ridge/Caroline on B&B, as Caroline was a beloved character and that story was a big part of Ridge's development, and Ronn and Joanna had great chemistry. They even brought Caroline back as a ghost a few years back.

For Y&R, I would also have to say Lorie and Lance and Leslie and Lucas. I know some people who haven't watched soaps in many years but they still remember "the 4 Ls".

Ryan's Hope:

1. Jack and Mary

2. Johnny and Maeve

3. Jill and Frank

4. Roger and Delia

5. Joe and Siobhan

If you ask me if *I* liked those couples, then generally my answer would not be that positive, but they were a big part of the show's fabric.

Pat/Faith would also be in there.

I was torn between these two. Erica and Jack have the longevity on their side, but as a couple, I thought she and Dimitri worked so much better. He was one of the few pairings she had in which he was her equal whereas with Jack, she is obviously the dominating figure there and always has been. Erica and Dimitri came at a time of one of AMC's best eras and some may argue the last time the soap was truly great. Their story helped define that. I think the only time Jack and Erica possibly worked was in the late 80s. Since then he's been someone they tend to stick her with in between her other men

^^^^well, it's hard to distill 54 years into five couples. I don't even remember Penny&Jeff, but heard stories of their impact.

Holden and Lily are the most obvious answer I left off...arguably, admittedly. The choice I've seen that I really don't get is Tom and Margo. Both roles were recast so many times, it's hard for me to credit them with being "definitive" to ATWT.

Lisa wasn't even played by EF while married to Whit. I really don't know which of Lisa's romances holds the most significant place in ATWT history. I'd argue Bob, since Tom was the only son she had for most of the run. I probably liked Earl the most, while she probably had the longest relationship (romantically) with Grant.

Capitol:

Trey and Sloane.

    • This is (maybe) overly simplistic and nonsoapy, but Doug needs to go to Gamblers Anonymous, to deal with the addictive neurological excitement hits that gambling gives him - and which control his life. Vanessa needs to go to therapy to find ways to remain healthfully lusty and sex-positive, but to stay away from anyone who would demean her.
    • YT keeps commending GL clips to me. I discovered Kathleen Cullen was on in Christmas 1987. Was there any talk of making it permanent  or was this just a special visit? I wish they had made the visit permanent. I liked her chemistry with Grant Aleksander.
    • I'm not sure it's as unpopular as you think.  I just think the show knew they were in a bind, and needed a proven couple for the viewers to invest in. Trying to reunite Vanessa and Ross had just failed in 87. I don't think Ed and Holly's affair was well received, as Simon and Garrett had a brother/sister chemistry. Enter Billy and Vanessa, who give you history and an out not to try and do a Josh/Reva/Billy triangle, which would've really wrecked the relationship between Josh and Billy. I'd have been ok with trying Vanessa/Ross again, and doing a Vanessa/Ross/Holly/Billy quad for a while. I hated Nadine. HATED. She had to be the most insufferable also-ran before ATWT's Julia Lindsay. This is where I wish I knew Roger's history better.

    • GROSS. Michael Swan was hot back in his ATWT days. Now he's 76 and WAY past his hot years.
    • Since she kidnapped, locked up and tried to kill her father's wife I'd say that is still a pretty big deal
    • I'm good with the gushing, too. There aren't many soap icons like John Black, and that's important to celebrate and remember. And yes, life does go on for other characters, but as they say, timing is everything. Going sky diving the day before the funeral? And during a week of shows that were so powerful emotionally? No.
    • No. There might have been a slight pause for dramatic effect after his "death," but pretty soon after they showed him in France getting plastic surgery and getting involved with his doctor, then planning with her to bring Christina to France. (She thought he had good reason to do it; she wasn't a bad person or anything). Now that I think of it, there must have been some kind of pause before that, during the 70s. Rita was accused of killing a private patient for an inheritance when she lived in Texas. Part of the backstory was that Roger had been there, too. Not sure exactly when or how long that was.
    • I've already stated that I don't like Doug being written as this meek and submissive. It was so lame watching him leave her like that. Vanessa can divorce him, but she then needs to get her thot ass into therapy. She's not only having sex with every guy she runs into, but is now having  sex with a skeevy perv on a poker table. I'm going to give the BTG some credit here. For months, many on this board were delighting in the Vanessa/Joey flirting and what they saw as chemistry. I think we're now seeing what the writers always intended -- that Joey is a disgusting POS wannabe mobster.
