AMC and OLTL Canceled!

I agree with you both that ABC was probably putting its eggs in the AMC basket between the two shows but I don't think it really mattered. As others have pointed out in this thread, it's simply too expensive to stay in production in return for demo ratings hovering around 1.0 and households around 2.0. I doubt that the network sees much difference if any in advertising revenue between a .6 and a .8 demo and maybe networks' view now is that those ratings are the new standard for daytime no matter who's writing or producing. Ratings have been decreasing for years. If that's the case, then they'll just go cheap. There is precedent. Prime time Saturday night was very successful in the not-so-distant past. Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, and Carol Burnett shows in the 1970s on CBS, then "Love Boat" and "Fantasy Island" on ABC in the late '70s/early '80s, to "Golden Girls," "Empty Nest" and others on NBC through the rest of the decade, finally back to CBS with "Dr. Quinn". Now it's just reruns and news shows.

I hate to see these shows end. I watched ABC back in college in the late '80s and enjoyed them all. But the economics just don't work anymore for a 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year format.

Absolutely. One of the things McTavish did a lot of in 03-04ish that I loved was upping the presence of Mona and her memory. They even had a brief moment in one of the Christmas episodes were Bianca placed a rose next to a framed picture of Mona.

No matter how much history they could destroy or take away from the rest of the show, one thing is clear: there's no such thing as Erica Kane without Erica Kane's history, who she is, why she is, and how she is. An Erica fan knows Erica, and so an Erica fan knows Mona and what the two of them went through. You can't gloss over that.

Maybe that stupid bastard Frons convinced ABC to cancel OLTL, then they looked at AMC's lower numbers and said well if we made the decision to cancel a higher rated soap, then lets cancel AMC too.

then again, why did the March rumors only mention AMC as being cancelled? because OLTL was only added in April it appears like ABC decided to cancel AMC, then later OLTL as well. Maybe that bimbo was the one who added OLTL to the list, since she is rumored to wanted

to cancel GH too, I suspect its possible Frons only proposed to cancel one soap and she made him cancel two.

Perfect AMC ending:

Erica is talking to Bianca and Kendall and says "There's something I need to do." The show fades to commercial. When it comes back, a few other scenes play, but the LAST scene shows the Hollywood sign and Erica walking down Hollywood Blvd.

Then the flashback of "Pine Valley isn't exacctly the corner of Hollywood and Vine" plays, and when that ends, Erica is standing at the corner of Hollywood and Vine...She smiles and whispers "I made it."

What AMS said. Not so much "I made it! " but "I made it. ^_^ And I never really needed it", more musingly, because of course Erica "Made it! " YEARS ago. Plus, it's a double moment because we get to acknowledge Nick. I'm all for packing in the moments, however brief they are. It's like Brooke having the throwaway line about Phoebe joining Langley up yonder, it needed to be established and by that point that was perhaps the best way how.

So I read Mario Batali told soap fans to "get over it" way to win people over asshat

I guess Sweeney said all calls about the show will be deleted and the numbers and addresses have been removed from the medianet site

*shudders* If Frons ends upo somehow running ABC Primetime, I shudder to think what he'll do to Desperate Housewives, it'll be misogynistic central

In one of the tribute threads I said this

I don't think the end of AMC should be Erica living happily ever after to be honest. That flies in the face of the whole Scarlett O'Hara motif the character has been built on. Tomorrow is another day and I think the final shot of Erica needs to be Jackson telling her he doesn't give a damn (in so many words) and Erica melodramatically promising herself she is going to get him back. Then the actual final scene I would have with the actually happy Martins, Dr Joe leading his family in a dinner with all the various Martins and hangers on situated around the table while he recites the AMC poem in lieu of saying grace. Very Norman Rockwell for Joe, Tad and crew, and very Margaret Mitchell for Erica Kane.

I think ending with Dr Joe and Ruth makes a more satisfying period at the end of this sentence.

    • The casting of Reginald seemed to have been part of the reason for a lack of exploration of vulnerability in the character. I know Mary talked about not liking the change in Reg, but her disappointment was rarely explored once she left him.  For example, did she ever question if Reg was conning her in Paraguay, or was the Bay City version of Reg real? Imagine running a philanthropic center in Paraguay, and then becoming a social worker in Bay City?  It must have been so frustrating to once be able to provide anything that anyone needed, and now having to rely on government funded programs. And lastly, she went from a house full of servants, to living over a restaurant.  We were supposed to believe that she was so blinded by her love for Vince and the kids, that she never longed for her life when someone else washed her lingerie?
    • This was an excellent "filler" episode but I'd prefer to refer to it as a character building episode. I love that BTG is paced in a way that they can have episodes like this as opposed to the repetitive nature of the other soaps which don't leave room for this. The highlight for me was Eva with Martin's family. They've talked so much about her doing hair and I was so excited to finally get to see that in action. I thought the tension with Samantha was nice since she is a Dupree woman. I also love that Martin is trying to help Eva feel welcomed. I struggled a bit with Martin but he really shines when put across Eva, Kat and his grandparents. He definitely gets my vote for most improved. I also loved the scenes with Dani, Nicole and Andre. I love that Nicole clocked them so easily lol. I know many haven't enjoyed how Dani has acted since the Ted/Eva reveal but I find it so heartwarming watching her with Nicole. They clearly have a deep love for each other despite their differences and I love that Dani still tries even though her approach isn't always great and her whole life is a mess. Nicole/Dani is another one of the star pairs on the show. Anita and Vernon's scenes were excellent and the more I see of this story, the more I can't wait for the Articulettes to show up. I wonder if they've already been quietly cast and are filming. Not that I'm complaining, but the set is like Fort Knox so we really have no clue what is going on there. I can only hope we will see them soon. I also must say, Tamara Tunie looked stunning today.  The Jacob/Naomi scenes were another highlight. I like the working class vibe they give to the show. I'm also becoming intrigued about June and want to know more about how she ended up on the streets and who she's connected to. I hope it's Haley because she's in dire need of some backstory and development. The weak point of the episode were the Bill and Haley scenes. How are you going to have them having sex on his desk and we couldn't see a little bra or shirtless action from Bill? That was tired and a waste of time. They need to work on integrating them more with the rest of the canvas. I do not care about them anymore.
    • I always thought the cliffhanger was so anticlimactic, compared to the Dallas cliffhanger that year and three years earlier Kirby strangled Alexis, which Blake stopped. The Matthew cliffhanger was dull as hell.
    • Setting aside a general distaste for the story -- I was sitting here wondering how long Erica's doppelgänger Jane story lasted?  Also, how did it begin?  What was the setup for Erica to have a double?
    • Fixed. Thanks for letting me know.   DA's passing truly saddened me. More than many of the recent passings. I was holding out hope we'd get one more visit  before she passed.

    • Made even dumber with that Blake/Alexis chokehold, followed by the following season when Matthew resurfaced. WTF? There’s good reason I have skipped from Season 5 straight to Season 9 on a couple of my Dynasty rewatches lol. And Chase was supposed to die, but somehow they talked Foxworth back into one more season. They probably shouldn’t have at all.
    • Philip, like Reva, were characters that should have remained in the 80s and never been bought back to the soap.
    • I was just going through the vault and watching some random episodes from 2001, then 2006. Sigh. What a different show it was back then. It makes me so sad that it’s barely a shell of its former self. It was always so multigenerational. There were compelling stories for all generations without having to sacrifice anything to make it work.
    • We are exactly the same. Ashland Locke at least had potential until JG decided to ruin that as he’s known to do with just about everything. It’s clear Sony and CBS don’t give a [!@#$%^&*].
    • Considering Naomi/Jacob are helping with June... and that she and Jacob have a complicated history with Hayley.. there is more soap opera potential having June and Hayley being related.    This is the downside of the show having one huge extended family... anyone not related to the family are boxed in a corner (i.e. Ashley/Derek, Tomas, Hayley/Bill).   If this were a 30 minute soap, I could understand the one family focus.. but this an hour soap so we best be getting a second family and/or characters not connected to the Duprees unless through work/romantic.. etc.
