Here is that interview from TV Guide:

http://www.tvguide.com/News/Revolution-Producer-Soap-1031882.aspx

Reality producer J.D. Roth had a hunch that ABC was close to picking up his new daytime series The Revolution. But Roth says he had no idea until Thursday morning that his greenlight would come at the expense of two soap opera staples.

Thursday's ABC soapocalypse left daytime fans reeling, as the network pulled the plug on 43-year-old One Life to Live and 41-year-old All My Children. Roth, whose new show will take the place of OLTL in January, says he first brought The Revolution to ABC more than a year ago.

"We pitched an idea for daytime that had a fresh perspective, and they liked it," says Roth, who shot the pilot to The Revolution six months ago. "I didn't know if it was going to be for syndication or network. No one talked about replacing anything. It's bittersweet for me. On the one hand, we're bringing a new genre to daytime. But on the other hand, I grew up watching my mom watching these soap operas. I want to be respectful of it."

The producer admits he's going to have to work hard to win over viewers angered by the move. "You always have to earn the audience's respect," says Roth, whose 3Ball Entertainment also produces NBC's The Biggest Loser. "It was not an easy task to put on a show with extremely overweight people. That was not a popular choice when the show first came out. It took seasons for the audience to catch on."

Roth and 3Ball have made transformational stories, particularly in the weight loss space, a hallmark of their company. Next up, their new ABC primetime series Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition will chronicle people as they attempt to remake their lives and drop pounds over the course of a year.

The Revolution will utilize a similar production strategy, as camera follow participants over the course of months. Hosted by Tim Gunn, celebrity trainer Harley Pasternak and American Idol alum Kimberley Locke, the show will focus on one woman each week as she spends five months (boiled down to five days) attempting to lose weight. ABC has given 3Ball a lengthy production commitment — more than the standard 13 weeks for new shows such as this.

"A lot of advance work has already been done on the show," says Roth. As for soap opera fans, Roth notes that he has plenty of friends in that world — including Days of Our Lives' Alison Sweeney, who doubles as host on The Biggest Loser.

"I feel for those people who love the art of soap operas, the writing and the craft," he says. "I have nothing but respect to that world and its 50 years on TV."

Meanwhile, there may be a glimmer of hope for All My Children and One Life to Live fans: Insiders at the network say ABC would be willing to entertain offers from other outlets — either cable or online — that might be interested in picking up the shows or even taking over ownership.

But before you get your hopes up, ABC (which didn't shop the shows before making the announcement) doesn't think they'll get any interest. And indeed, when TV Guide Magazine asked several cable networks whether they'd be interested, reps for those channels — including Oprah Winfrey Network and Hallmark Channel — said no.

Weight loss is not a new genre for daytime. Richard Simmons had a daytime show and was on GH. Too bad Jack Lalane isn't here anymore...

I also don't understand why ABC is making a show based on something that is fading fast in primetime.

I find BB's quitter's remorse a little annoying. The ship has sailed, it's probably StarrJam ( ) from here on out.

JD Roth, ha, I used to watch him every morning before school when he hosted a kids game show called Fun House. Anyone else remember that (late '80s/early '90s)?

I would like to see Agnes or Lorraine spinoff All My Children into a series of books. The show had this at one time back in the 70s, where each book focused on specific characters or couples. I believe there was a book on Phil and Tara, for example.

I adore her. I almost started crying at that Regis and Kelly clip where she talks about AMC being cancelled.

From Mariah Buzolin's (Maya AMC) twitter http://twitter.com/MariahBuzolini

I don't know why but for some reason that just made me sadder than all the other tweets by actors I obviously love more. Maybe because just a few days earlier she tweeted this

:(

    • Yes!!! Mona feels  like one of my aunts, love the way she carries herself.  I also loved seeing Eva pop-up at the  gambling place.  Monday was all around good soap. I can't remember the last time an entire episode held my interest.  I'm loving the fallout in reverberations from Ted and Shea-Butter Sheila's affair

. as nice as it would've been to see Anita embrace Eva, I'm glad she didn't because we can squeeze a lot more years of conflict out of the dynamic between Eva, Leslie and the Duprees.   Lauren & Sheila, Viki and Dorian, Katherine and Jill all gave us good conflict for decades...hopefully this follows suit. I understand the concern. Right now there's an issue of quality of black representation on shows more so than quantity of black shows. I'd like to see more predominantly black sci-fi, legal, political, supernatural or medical dramas over the typical who is sleeping with who. However, this is a soap, and this is what happens on soaps. White soap characters do these things all the time. but have the luxury of being seen as individuals, not representations of their entire race. Husbands/fathers like Todd Manning, Victor Newman and Asa Buchanan cheat, lie and swindle all the time but aren't seen as a commentary on white men. Black characters like Ted and New Dollar Bill should be able to do the same.

    • Even under the new writers, Jamey episodes are the shortest and the weakest A lot of people were unnecessarily clowny and bitchy today. There was a lot of fluff and filler too. And the dialogue was a little… ehhh as well. But welcome back, Kevin! It’s been a long time lol his return still seems really random but I don’t mind it. Philip’s actions make sense to me based on everything that’s happened to him lately and it could possibly set up more tension between him and Xander/Alex. And I wouldn’t mind seeing him and Kevin team up. I thought the actor did a good job too. Too bad that they couldn’t get Robert Benvenisti back though. I didn’t realize it in 2001 but he was hot

And, we got the word that Arianna wants to come home. I’m looking forward to that, and seeing her relationships with Gabi, Marlena, etc. on display and I hope that

As for Rachel’s birthday party… was Days hinting at something that we’ve been speculating about since EJ was shot?

    • Portugal qualifying was the only shocker. I'm really happy for Iceland. IMO, the automatic finalists – Spain, Switzerland and Italy – had the best performances. I love the studio version of Azerbaijan, but on stage, it was a disaster.

    • Randy (Doug's friend who works for Joey) -- Joey told Randy weeks ago that Joey's plan was to get Doug into so much debt that Doug would be forced to get Vanessa's real estate holding turned over to Joey, to use for money-laundering.  That's been the plan all along, which the viewers knew.  The only thing new is that Joey finally told Doug this. I think Joey is written badly.  I also think Jon Lindstrom is doing "Now I am going to act menacing".   But I don't really feel the menace.  It's too overdramatic and it doesn't feel like a real person.  Jon is a fine actor on GH, so I don't know what's happening here -- the entire BTG mobster premise is badly designed/written.  I don't know if Guza pushed for a mobster storyline?  Or did Jon?  (Jon wrote a novel about Hollywood mobsters). It just doesn't fit.  It feels (to me) like this storyline for Jon was just shoved onto the canvas but it doesn't fit all all. Monday's scene of Mona coming into the "casino" to check up on where Leslie supposedly lost money in the slot machines -- and Randy explaining to Mona that there are no slot machines, there is nothing but the card room.  I had to laugh because they had characters comment that it's just a card room and not a casino -- the show is now acknowledging that there's nothing there.  If they are going to do this, then have it make sense for Fairmont Crest residents to visit a high-end glamourous casino, and not a random room with one table. So what money is Joey laundering? A while back, Joey told Vanessa that he knows about her sexual philandering because owns the escort service that she'd been using. But I don't care...  I'd just prefer that the entire mobster storyline go away.
