OLTL: Discussion for the week of February 28

I thought today's episode had an especially clumsy script--just ALL that forced recap in conversation seemed to be handled with not even a touch of finesse in scene after scene... For a second there I thought we'd actually see Michael Easton shirtless, but no he kept the blankets up as high as any woman on a soap would. (Don't get me wrong, I'm not exactly gagging to see Easton shirtless, but...)

It's like the Jedi Mind Trick. *waves hand* "This isn't the lying little whore you're looking for..."

Honestly the way the Bukes have been acting has been so...1980s. Especially Nat and Joey. Their entitlement and arrogance has been straight out of Dallas and Dynasty. The only thing missing is the Nolan Miller gowns. Joey married another woman. Natalie tried to pass off another man's baby yet they both feel perfectly justified issuing orders, demands and threats to John and Kelly (when they weren't trying to emotionally blackmail them.) Then there's Viki who's clearly so deep in Miss Ellie mode, they should change the name of Llanfair to Southfork.

Is it propping Natalie or rather propping John and Kelly? All this does is make Natalie come across ugly and garnishes sympathy for Kelly, who's being attacked by everyone and John comes off smelling like roses. Natalie is clearly in the wrong, yet she's ranting like a lunatic andusing her baby to guilt John. The writing doesnt seem to be doing her any favors and I think they want support for Kelly and John here, not Natalie

The whole story seems to be about how worthless Natalie and Joey are. Day in and day out. This is how OLTL and most soaps write stories today. It's not about who you like most it's about who you hate the least.

Aubrey, Cutter, Kelly, John - hate them the least

Joey, Natalie - hate them the most

It's meant to prop Natalie. That's the intent. But ironically your post shows that there's a difference between the message sent and the message received.

You are 100% right that Natalie is being written ugly and wrong and manipulative but the people writing her don't see her that way. They think she's being passionate, devoted and faithful. They don't see that the writing isn't doing her any favors because they don't understand an audience that doesn't value women solely by who they fu*k.

IMO you think this story is some kind of backwards, double flip, shadow plot to gain sympathy for Kelly/John because you can't imagine how someone thinks this writing is good for a character. Sadly, I think if you look at ABC's history, you'll realize that these hoofbeats belong to horses, not zebras.

I guess the reason I see the writing this way is mostly because I can't remember a time in GT Kelly's years on the show that she has not been propped and given sympathetic writing, to the point of writing a woman who had lost a late term child and had a stroke as being nasty for not immediately forgiving Kelly over the car accident.

I wasn't watching for most of the Higley years so I can't say about John.

Nat keeping secrets from John was really stupid but it's John that looks like the ass (especially given his serial abandonment complex).

All the drama at Llanfair the past couple of days could've been avoided had John & Kelly just left well enough alone.

John clearly wants nothing to do with Natalie NOR a long term commitment from Kelly yet can't help but goad Joey about BETRAYAL SEX with Kelly in between being an emotionally distant asshole to Nat.

John certainly has a right to his anger but given his history of abandoning his current women for the next damsel in distress his current renders his current manpain not all that sympathetic.

Kelly goes Llanfair (with a PIE no less) to apologize to Nat for screwing Nat's fiancee (an idea Blair just told her was terrible) THEN had no problem acting hurt cause JOEY (who owed Kelly NOTHING) chose to marry someone else.

Then when she's face to face with Nat Kelly has the nerve to act hurt that Nat is less than happy about her being there at all.

She's in Nat's house apologizing TO Nat & she acts SHOCKED Nat won't accept her apology or want her there. Did she expect Natalie to throw her a parade?

Then John/Kelly go back to John's to wallow in sex & self pity?

They can have each other.

As far as Viki she hasn't really free passed Nat so much as there's so much going on with Clint, Jess & the rest of her family that getting mad at Nat is one of the least of her primary concerns.

She hasn't been too invested in Joey's ongoing issues with Clint or blaming Brody for Moan Sex since all hell broke loose either that doesn't mean she necessarily agrees with Joey or Brody's behavior.

I think it is about time Viki has Natalie's back. I find it crazy how most times Viki is all "poor Kelly", you know the woman who cheated on one of her sons with the other son and then cheated on that son with her grandson and in between that passed off someone else's baby as her grandchild. Funny how Kelly didn't bring that little detail up yesterday when she told John she knew what it was like to lose a child. As for who we are suppose to have sympathy for, I don't think soaps are all that sneaky about things like that. I think 9 times out of 10, if we are being told someone is acted out or wrong (or right) over and over again, that is what we are suppose to believe. I see it as we are suppose to see everyones POV and pain. Me personally, I have no sympathy for John.
