FROM THE VAULT: EPISODE # 1706: 53 YEARS AGO TODAY: AUGUST 9, 1972: A LOOK BACK AT TWO "DAYS" LEGENDS: BILL BELL'S OUTLINE TO PAT FALKEN SMITH:

Here's a look at Bill Bell's outline of Episode # 1706, which aired 53 years ago today, on August 9, 1972. Bill describes the action in the episode to Pat Falken Smith (who has just returned from a vacation), who is tasked with writing the dialogue for the episode:

This is so cool to see, Jason! Thanks for sharing.

Thought it would be fun for Days history fans, especially since it involved Bill and Pat specifically!  You can sort of get the feeling of seeing Bill dictating all of this to his secretary in Chicago, or perhaps he typed this himself.

For some reason, I can picture PFS pulling an Abby Ewing on Bill Bell: "Oh, and one more thing: don't call me 'honey'."

Sorry for bringing up a tired topic, though I'll always find it endlessly interesting, but has anyone ever pinpointed the last time Maggie/Marlena were treated as proper friends before their obvious falling out.

Also, with the infamous stone cold hug during John's memorial, can anyone enlighten me on what issues may have occurred between Deidre Hall and Kristian Alfonso. Discussion surrounding those episodes was genuinely the first time I'd ever heard of anything.

More on that, do you think politics could play a role? We know Deidre Hall is a democrat without question, so the rumoured non-Democrats in these very visceral political times with several actress Deidre Hall hasn't shared much screen-time with could play a part, or maybe I'm just bloviating.

The last time I remember Maggie/Marlena sharing significant screen time together was during the Salem Serial Killer/Melaswan era.  Maggie was still considered one of her best friends.  I think Maggie was also around when John was presumed dead in 2007, but in a small capacity.  Marlena/Deidre weren't on the show when Mickey or Alice died and by the time Deidre returned it was clear Suzanne/Deidre weren't on great terms.

No idea what's up with Kristian/Deidre.  They never seemed like the best of friends but always seemed cordial.  I am not positive they aren't still although that hug was odd to say the least.  I believe Kristian's a Democrat as well because she attended a White House event while Biden was in office.  I just assumed the two may have had a falling out with the way Kristian dramatically left the show during Covid.

I have no idea if politics play a role in who Deidre shares scenes with.  Ari Zuker and I believe Greg Vaughan are both Republicans and Dee shared plenty of scenes with them.  There wouldn't necessarily be a need for Marlena to share scenes with Missy/Jen especially when MR appears so infrequently.  Idk, Suzanne aside, I get the feeling Deidre does her job then leaves and doesn't care that much about anyone else lol.

KAY PETERS

IN LOVING MEMORY

APRIL 11, 1942-MAY 9, 2025

(Sarah Fredericks, 1970)

Kay Peters, who played Sarah Fredericks on "Days of Our Lives" for 34 episodes in 1970 has passed away at the age of 83. On "Days", Sarah Fredericks worked at the prison where Bill Horton and Doug Williams spent time in 1970 and even appeared in the first episode of Bill Hayes (Doug). Peters is pictured above in a "Days" publicity photo with Joan Van Ark, who played Janene Whitney.

Kay L. Peters, 83, died May 9, 2025, from respiratory failure. Kay was born and raised in Wooster, Ohio where she began her interest in the arts, dance and debate. While in high school she ran her own dance studio and performed at Canal Fulton Summer Theatre. She was valedictorian of a class of 500. Kay graduated from Northwestern University in 1963 majoring in theatre. She met the love her life, Richard, at college, and they married in 1963. She continued her acting pursuits by performing in dinner theatres while Richard completed his law studies in Chicago. Moving to New York City, she landed a lead role on Broadway, a role on Days of Our Lives, and numerous TV commercials. While in Hollywood she did many guest appearances on Little House on the Prairie, It Takes a Thief, The Bold Ones, and CHiPs. She also did One Life to Live and half a dozen movies. Pausing her career to start a family, having daughters Tara (1971) and Tracy (1973), she had to focus on her early skills of teaching. The seeds were planted for a shift in career to communication skills training. In 1978 Kay became a member of the Board of Directors of Screen Actors Guild and was asked to chair the new Telecommunications Committee. She had to interface with Congress and ultimately testified before the House Judiciary Subcommittee on copyright issues opposite Ted Turner. Watching others testify cemented her shift to teach communications skills. Kay developed those skills by working for a small boutique firm for several years. Opening her own company in 1994, Kay trained CEOs, scientists, lawyers, doctors, management consultants, IPOs launches, investment bankers, and occasionally children of clients' college bound. Kay worked both domestically and internationally. The same passion Kay had for acting and communication training, she had for her family. She always had time for her daughters and husband. Kay was lifelong Presbyterian and member of the Brick Presbyterian Church. Kay started each morning in saying: This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it (Psalms 118:24). Kay is survived by her husband, Richard, their two daughters Tara (Michael) Peterson and Tracy (Jonathon) Herpel, grandchildren, Xander, Beau, Audrey, Alistair, and a sister Joan (Maurice) Moore. Contributions in Kay Peters' honor may be made to Helen Keller Intl, Contributions Office, P.O. Box 6077, Albert Lea, MN 56007-9860 HelenKellerIntl.org/donate A memorial service will be held at the Brick Presbyterian Church on October 3, 2025, at 11:00am. A reception will follow.  (Obituary via https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/nytimes/name/kay-peters-obituary?id=58450514)

Yeah, I’ve heard those same rumors about Deidre not always being the warmest off-screen, which might explain the “coldness” people pick up on. The supposed friction with Crystal Chappell has floated around for years, though it was never confirmed. With Suzanne Rogers it does feel like a genuine loss, since Maggie and Marlena were such solid best friends for decades. And with Kristian - yeah, that hug was telling. At best, it suggested some distance; at worst, maybe something more personal behind the scenes.

Randomly walked past Al Calderon this afternoon. We were both with a friend of our own. I didn’t bother him, but he looked just as good in person.

@AbcNbc247 - since we've been discussing the changing in writing staff, I thought these quotes highlighted a couple of interesting things.

  1. C&F do not feel beholden to prior versions of writing.
  2. C&F may not even know what some of RonC intentions were.
  3. The reports of actors feeling that there is some amorphous date when everything will change seems to be an opinion that is not shared by everyone in the production (in other words, C&F want to appear to be guiding the ship, not waiting until fall).
