I wonder if this means we'll see less of Sloan in the future (which would be a shame because she was growing on me).

We hear Del Vecchio, 28, one of the world’s youngest billionaires, popped the question while they were vacationing at the five-star Borgo Santandrea Luxury Hotel on Italy’s Amafi coast. - sounds nicer than spending time in Burbank...

This inspired me to do a quick Google search, prior to Senior Del Vacchio, whose family owns the largest manufacturer and licensures of sunglasses in the world, she was engaged to Kaan Gunay, the billionaire owner of the Firefly ad agency, Milutin Gatsby, a billionaire film producer, James Packer, the billionaire Australian media owner and former flame of Mariah Carey, Logan Paul, and Ed Westwick.  So, 4/6 of her engagements were to billionaires.  And she was married at 17 to her baby's father.  Thus, she has seven diamond engagement rings, one for every day of the week.  But, considering her history of serial monogamy, I'd hold off on buying her a wedding gift just yet...

Today, I learned/remembered that Nicole's father was Paul Mendez and her mother was Fay Walker, which begs the question of why does Nicole use her mother's maiden name?

And even if there's some specific reason for that, why would Brandon use the last name Walker?

Is this a classic case of soaps de-Latino-izing a family?

Not really.  Nicole's dad was abusive and beat Faye and the children.  He also sold Nicole into porn and raped Jan Spears.  Abe helped send him to jail.  Faye was basically a single mom and it makes sense the children used that name. I also believe the family was trying to hide from him at different points in time. I actually think they made Paul Latino after the Walker family was thought out because of Matt Cedeno's casting to explain the reason Brandon looked more ethnic than his sisters.  So, I don't think it was a case of white washing necessarily, but more the kids didn't want anything to do with an evil guy.   But that's just my take and other people could absolutely see it differently.

Agreed.

I would also imagine that they created Nicole and her sister before they concocted her backstory.  Because, it would be unusual for a child born in the 1970s to take on their mother's surname, assuming that Faye and Paul were married at the time of Nicole's birth.  I would've assumed it was Nicole's "stage name" from her time as a model, but my question arose from the fact that her siblings all share the same last name.

Definitely.  I think the father backstory was always there as far as the fact he was a bad guy.  Nicole was always vague and shady about the dad and her upbringing.  She was very embarrassed by Faye being a waitress as well.   Taylor first appeared with an entirely different last name (Raines) and I have no idea why.  I don't think it was ever an idea to make Paul Latino until Days had to clumsily handle clearly Hispanic Cedeno and how he might be Abe or Paul's son, which is a whole other issue lol.  The Walker/Mendez backstory has always been a little weird.

Raines or Walker was originally Faye's maiden name. Nicole was a social climber so I think she might have changed her name to distance herself from her working class roots. Original Taylor was a cleaning lady in the building where Eric Brady was handling all his photography. I believe Sally Sussman Morina created Taylor and Nicole, while Fay, Brandon, and Paul came later under Tom Langan, but I might be wrong on some of that.

    • BITD I was posting about how interesting it was that Denise had been with this same guy for simply years but they just did not marry - then that year they married!
    • Random takes from this week: - Bill’s been played way too soft by the actor. I just can’t buy him doing anything truly sinister. I wish he had more of that old-school Victor Newman edge. - On characterization: I’m fine with Leslie being shown as a narcissistic and cruel mother—as long as she doesn’t tip into full cartoon villain territory. Dani’s involvement in Nicole’s storyline feels natural to me, and I really like that Martín is such a hothead, which totally clashes with his polished political career. No wonder no one wants to confide in him. Also, I don’t mind Haley’s characterization at all. - I’m still annoyed they dropped the whole lawsuit storyline. That’s why I’m a bit hesitant about getting too invested in the June plot. Also: I can do without another instant-sibling storyline. - Ashley and Derek? Totally fine with them in small doses. That’s the best way to handle those two. - Thank God Ted is getting recast. I honestly couldn’t handle that constant swaying much longer. - Speaking of Ted: maybe I’m in the minority here, but that hotel set is hideous. The oversized boiserie makes everything look flat, and that artwork on the wall? Bland, ugly, and lifeless. - I’m 50/50 on the product placement. On one hand, it’s totally misplaced and campy—especially when it shows up in the middle of emotional scenes. It just feels wrong. But on the other hand… here we are talking about Febreze and Tide. So maybe it is working? I honestly don’t know. - I don’t have any issues with the fashion on the show overall, but André’s wardrobe is just off. Not in terms of style, but size. His tops are way too tight and actually make him look even shorter than he is. Same goes for Smitty. Both of them would seriously benefit from some larger blazers or chunkier sweaters.
