Remember when they had poor Mickey Horton perve out on his younger maid (Judi Evans..chewing as much scenery as Deas there...) after his wife was brutally "murdered," and the actor had the good sense to quit so he was replaced by that weird Edward Quatermaine replacement? At least Gautman  never had Bob perve on a younger woman or choke Nancy Hughes to death with a donut..so there is that!

Someone commented here at SON that William Bell and James Reilly were the two most influential writers in DAYS' history. That may be true, but it was for different reasons. Bell made the show a huge success after its first tepid year on the air, and turned it into a mesmerizing, adult, high-quality romantic drama. Reilly came aboard with his high camp and low-brow, gimmick plots, and completely and forever destroyed the show's integrity and credibility. Bell influenced the show upwards, Reilly drove it into the toilet and kept on flushing.

Goutman's destruction of ATWT was less obvious, more subtle, but the damage he did to Oakdale ended up crippling ATWT too.

^ Thank you for the April 1986 episode - vintage Marland and one month before the May sweep showcasing the Doug Cummings murder trial.  But revisiting it, I was struck by the seemingly mundane exchange between Frannie and Sierra (about 29 minutes into the clip), where Frannie hoped that they could become good friends.  A simple, understated scene of friendship-building swirled by much meatier story lines.  It is a credit to Marland that their friendship did develop in 86 and by the time they ran into each other in London at the end of the year, their scenes seemed so organic.

It made a lot of sense since both were taking courses at Oakdale University (Sierra was pre-med, Frannie was a psychology major) so they had reason to be in each other's orbit.  I think one had even mentioned seeing the other around campus sometimes.

Marland constructed brief, simple scenes that could be built upon.  I don't know why we don't see that with today's soaps.

The Casey Peretti character was built off of those types of simple exchanges.  Also that same year, it was interesting to look back at how some simple, flirty exchanges between Barbara and Tonio would lead to a full-blown affair later on when Sierra and Tonio's marriage began to crater.

I was going over Craig's profile on SC... specifically his dating history...

Have you ever realized that throughout his stints in Oakdale (spanning all four actors), Craig Montgomery has been romantically involved with:

- 1 trio of sisters (Iva, Ellie and Meg Snyder)

- 3 pairs of sisters (Betsy and Emily Stewart; Lucinda Walsh and Samantha Markham; Carly Tenney and Rosanna Cabot)

- 3 mother-daughter pairs (Lucinda Walsh and Sierra Esteban; Barbara Ryan and Jennifer Munson; and worst of all... Betsy Stewart and Dani Androrpoulos).

I guess he really liked the Snyder, Stewart, Walters, Washburn and Ryan genes.

    • Of course, sexy silver fox Dr. Jeffrey Russell has to be in cahoots with EJ so that Kayla's morals don't look selfish and skewed when she is completely in the wrong in letting Steve accidentally on purpose look at the important hospital files. Anyone find it funny that a handful of characters slurred their words today?  I can't quite explain it, but sometimes, like today, I feel like Deidre Hall plays scenes too light or passive, for lack of a better word. She's definitely more known as a charismatic personality than powerhouse actress compared to her soap diva counterparts from other soaps, but I just wish she could give me more. I did, however, like that her scenes with EJ got a 'to be continued...' about Belle. Maybe then I'll see more of what I want from her. Have Shawn and Johnny literally ever had a scene together before today? If they start having Sarah in a scene where she connects with literally any other Horton, then I'll be really impressed.  I'm glad they went through the trouble of explaining why EJ bid on Cat. It made enough sense, and I laughed when Chad spit out his asking about it as soon as humanly possible.

    • But Leslie is doing it all for her daughter.

Such a liar. Great episode but Martin needs to be recast. He hasn't improved. I didn't feel anything for him because of his acting and the writing. He has been so isolated from Ted and Nicole that he doesn't seem like their son, much less family. Leslie is pure evil. She wants Ted and the house and the riches that go with it. She doesn't care about Eva. I felt really bad for Eva.
    • I dont understand the motivation behind it. Eva is her link to Ted and the Duprees and without her, she has nothing. It would have served better for Eva to be all fed up with her and leave the house on her own and Leslie try to make amends bc she needs her for this comeup she's been talking about. Eva can repair her relationship with Ted and maybe build something with the Duprees and cut her out
    • So good today Dante is overreacting blaming gio Hopefully Danny will come clean
    • Not mad at Leslie Locking Eva out, I think it's important for the audience to see her on her own for a while. Curious how scrappy and savvy she becomes on her own. Yeah, I am with you there. It feels a bit hollow; maybe if she was talking to Martin and Kat I would feel better about it. There must be more to this story. Daphnee and Ambyr owned this episode. Tugging my heart in every scene. Nicole process hurt and anger much differently than Dani though.
    • I also really enjoyed Eva's scenes with Kat today. They have an interesting chemistry. I thought it really did feel a bit like sisters at conflict. Especially with the way that Eva was trying to convince Kat to forgive Ted and them both coming to the conclusion that the man they thought was their father was different wasn't who they really thought he was initially. And the way that Eva broke down when Kat said that she was dead to her was emotional stuff. I really do think that in spite of their conflict/bickering Eva really would have loved to have gained a sister, along with a brother, father, etc... Also, I thought it was interesting how Eva kept saying that she loves Ted and Nicole. That and Leslie mentioning that Kat/Eva are almost twins really does make me wonder if Kat may really be her twin and Nicole's as well. I would gladly welcome that outcome, even if it takes a while for it to come out. At this point Leslie doesn't deserve Eva as a daughter as far as I'm concerned. And I would forward to a storyline where we found out that she's Nicole's second baby girl, and all the complex and ultimately happy feelings that would bring Nicole. Eva/Kat could still have a rivalry, especially if Nicole ended up doing some more bonding with Eva. And then we could get the rest of the family's reaction to that as well.
