NOOOOOOOOOOO! Those bastards. I'm right at the bottom 1/3 of Season 5. I'd only ever seen through Season 3.

Luckily...kinda...I do have through Season 6 on DVD's that I got from a fan, like, 12 years ago. But they're transfers from VHS tapes recorded off the SoapNet airing. Not good quality. That's part of why I never made it past Season 3.

I have to believe that, since someone went to the trouble of finally digitizing all the episodes that it'll find its way to another streaming service. Probably Max as others have posited on this board.

You’re welcome @kalbir it’s funny as a late 80’s preteen I remember watching Dallas with my parents and siblings atill the bitter end along with other shows like  Knots The Equalizer, LA Law, and shows like Scarecrow and Mrs King and Remington Steele yet Falcon Crest was a show I just occasionally watched and lost track of. I knew of Dynasty but it was always on a school night (although we were 8:00MT lol)

I guess I have a fonder memory for the late  80’s primetime soaps in their later days than most because that’s when I started watching them even though they were past their prime in retrospect.

Falcon Crest final two seasons were not necessary and I feel they only happened because CBS was in their third place primetime mess era. Season 8 was a chore to get through and season 9 had a darkness and sadness surrounding it and it was painful to get through. A good amount of the final two seasons I was like "make it make sense".

If we're keeping it real, after watching Falcon Crest episodes I was surprised it made it past Spring 1986. 1985/86 was the season tanking was cemented (signs of tanking were showing during the last 10 episodes of 1984/85) as the storylines were so start and stop and most of them didn't really work. I will admit 1986/87 was an improvement but it was still tanking. 1987/88 it started going off the rails and Spring 1988 should have been the end. Spring 1988 to me feels like it should have been the natural end point for 1980s primetime soaps.

Its so funny how the fortunes of CBS daytime and primetime were in opposite directions by Fall 1989: killing it in daytime w/ all four soaps at full strength plus the game show block but an absolute mess in primetime.

While I found the Freilich era to resurrect the show and make it highly entertaining, I still vividly remember your satire post with Jane Wyman quotes several several pages back Khan

Dallas should’ve ended with Sue Ellen telling JR he’ll  be the laughing stock of Texas while FC should’ve ended with Angela’s very ominous “I’ll be back” to Melissa.

Well, last is usually considered a "star spot". I'm more confused with Mark Lindsay Chapman being named in this - he was hardly famous and not even a regular! I do think it's interesting how they just promoted it as a new show. Though it makes sense - I actually think it's probably a much more well-plotted and written season that a lot of them. But they could've pretty much just named it Falcon Crest: New Beginnings or something...

So, for the first time ever, I'm going into FC in earnest with a watch from the beginning until as far as I can get (which I was hoping would be the whole series until Freevee took it off). I think I have access to at least the first three seasons.

I'm going to have annoying questions/comments, so get ready

- Please tell me that them casually referring to Angela as "Angie" is just one of those things that only lasts through the first season and is never done ever again because it just seems so wrong!

- Lorenzo Lamas was hot from episode 1. He and Jane definitely had the chemistry as scheming grandmother with her apprentice grandson learning her ways.

- I forgot that the Giobertis were supposed to be a NYC family transplanted into NorCal, but the only one who gives off New Yorker vibes is Vickie. Cole absolutely looks, sounds, and acts like he's from rural America. Chase and Maggie give Midwest.

- I'm actually liking the more self-contained early episodes, but I wonder how they really marketed the show at the time. DALLAS was full-on soap by this time, so I'm impressed by the fact that they didn't rush FC into serialized mode and took time to develop the characters and relationships slowly. The continuing plot of Angela wanting Chase gone and the threat of the Giobertis finding out what really happened to Jason is good, though, and it frames everything else well.

Same here.  Those episodes were rough, like DALLAS's and KL's earliest episodes were rough, but they also showed some promise.

Moreover, given all that we know about Earl Hamner, Jr. and his career before FC, I think those episodes were more in his wheelhouse as a producer/writer.

I think all subsequent seasons should have been mapped out that way: self-contained episodes that still fit within a season-long arc or mystery.  The more FC tried to be like DALLAS and DYNASTY (and later, "Miami Vice"), the further it got away from itself.

Season 1 felt like wealthy Waltons in modern day California wine country and it was a good start that built the foundation.

CBS should have realized that Earl Hamner was not David Jacobs or Aaron Spelling or Bill Bell. Family drama was more Earl Hamner style, not soap opera.

I thought seasons 2 and 3 were Falcon Crest peak even though it became Dallas with grapes/James Bond hybrid and that lasted through season 4. Season 5 became Dallas with grapes/Miami Vice hybrid because if you can't beat the new hotness might as well join it.

I agree.  I really like how FC was set up in the beginning, with the Giobertis as stand-ins for the audience, who would have been new to that world; and the Channing/Cumsons as their pseudo-Gothic relatives and rivals, who controlled the valley, and who would have provided some intrigue on occasion.  The only change I'd make would be to combine Emma and Julia into one character (as Lance's mentally unstable mother, who was unable to raise Lance herself - leaving the task entirely to Angela - and whom Lance regards more like a sibling than he does his actual parent).

    • I definitely think FV wanted to pair Kristina and Lucky.  Why else would Lucky decide to become a bartender at her stupid bar?  Lucky was a cop, a crusader?-whatever he was doing in Africa and all these years away.   It makes zero sense for him to just be content tending bar for some flakey girl he knew since she was born.  Have him work with Spinelli at PI firm or something.  There were also some scenes with Kristina and Lucky that seemed like the show was leaning in that direction.  I also suspect JJ was extremely unhappy with that idea lol. As far as Lulu, I certainly don't miss the JMB smug era.  I hate that BLQ looks like a poor, innocent victim being tortured by Lulu at every turn though.
    • I do think she's been pretty wrecked, having tried to kill someone in cold blood, letting her whole family (including the woman pregnant with her great-grandchild) get charged or questioned, and having no remorse, but it doesn't matter as much because Kathy has not existed as a character since Gillian's return anyway.  There are reasons to bring Max back, like Lauren and his not knowing he had a child with Linda, but he is exhausted, with Jake Wood phoning it in years before he left.  I am a little surprised about Zoe because Michelle Ryan said for years she didn't want to return, to the point of even asking the show to recast the role, but I guess this may only be a short stint. I wouldn't be shocked if they kill Zoe off.
    • HAHAHA. Yeah, that's my bad. I misread that line. Sorry about going into "Unnecessary" detail about my username. Anyway, I love the story behind your Username.    reading on my phone...

    • Completely agree with you. I think Bonita Brisker has been really good as Sharon. What Anita did was obviously awful, so she doesn't need to reign anything in. We're getting a good look at someone who's struggled in life compared to Anita "We're the Duprees!" Williams.   -- Anita is starting to look foolish for dredging all this up just so she  can get her ass back on stage. Is she so delusional she doesn't realize how she hurt Sharon and Tracy? -- Anita's line to Vernon "How can I expect Sharon to forgive me when I haven't forgiven myself" struck me as really selfish. After all that with Sharon, Anita again made it all about herself. -- Does anyone really believe Anita wants equal billing if the Articulettes reunite?  -- Colby Muhammad continues to be a standout. Her Kat more than holds her own with Leslie. -- The writing was very good for the father/daughter scene between Ted and Eva. It wasn't so good between Ted and Martin in their father/son scene. It didn't play like family to me, especially when Ted referred to "my wife" when talking about Nicole to Martin. -- Overall, a very solid show today.
    • I honestly do not see the point of Max coming back again. Zoe does not surprise me. I've been waiting for that since Bionic Woman flopped in the US, frankly. I'm not against it vs. some other pointless returns. Some returns work and some don't, some are just there. Like, am I grateful that Kathy is alive? Yes, absolutely. Do I love any of her stories? No. But she's not utterly destroyed, she's just there.
    • I think Frank probably wanted to try for Jonathan with Kate Mansi. I actually can't knock the idea of a Lucky/Kristina affair or flirtation on paper, as a romantic obstacle to LNL2, but not with the characters in the places they are at present or have been over the last few years. It would be a mistake to do right now and would poison the well. I think Jonathan probably made it clear when he came back that he wanted what had been promised to him years ago with Elizabeth, and between his not being one of FV's preferred focal leads and Liz being a grudging afterthought if she's not with one of his OLTL stars, I suspect FV was content to leave them where they are vs. where they should be, which is central on the show. It's like I said a few days ago: A lot of this is how Lulu has always been. But back in the day the issue was that Lulu (and Carly) were deified for it, whereas now it's that Lulu is just used as the heavy because FV has a preexisting favoritism for Setton/BLQ. And that's a waste of a key character and talent, namely Alexa Havins.
    • Melanie Smith was very difficult to replace, but as KMH did last for a long time, she clearly managed to do so. I preferred Melanie, but the main issue with Kelley is I just think she was horribly written for most of the time. Initially the writing wasn't horrible, it's more she was not the right choice, but over time the writing genuinely became awful, and unplayable, with a few exceptions (I think her pairings with Chris and Hal worked and got to take her in some new directions).
    • Coming into June and...   TRASH. Or as I like to say for moments like this...HUNNI, WHAT IS THIS?   Outside of seeing Traci come home...and then...Ashley...not a darn thing is going on. So they are clearing stalling now, aren't they? It really hit me during the Phyllis/Daniel scenes. It was feeling like a B&B scene where two characters have the same repetitive conversation. And I have not seen Phyllis/Daniel scenes in that light lately so yeeeeah NOPE.   I did like the touch of Traci arrived outside of the Abbott mansion door and taking a breath and looking around. Very aftereffects of Martin. And I liked her and Diane having their conversation about Martin. I wished JG had allowed Traci to stay in town to deal with her feelings about Martin so at least we are getting some follow-up on that.    And same with Ashley and her talk with Jack. I will take Eileen Davidson anyway I can get her. Dare I say...will she be around for the Dumas reveal?   Outside of...   Kyle, Claire, and Harrison in a park IS NOT a storyline.   Sharon having to use the phrases (and in text) with Nick dinner as friends IS NOT a storyline.   Giggly Heffa giggly-heffa-ing around town IS NOT a storyline.    With Damian MIA and my love of Eileen Davidson...I might just go on break until the Dumas reveal if this is how we are starting June.
    • Dragging this quote over from the Texas thread just because it shows a reference to Bay City as a fictional location at least as early as 1981. It doesn't quote Gail Kobe as saying it directly but the point she is making about the Houston setting of Texas does seem to take it for granted that Bay City is not real.
